I’m looking for some really good novels. Most of the novels I read, many of the ideas in the book are obvious. I’m looking for something that will shock you. When the end of the story is not something that was obvious through the whole book.
One really, really good example is “Pyramid Base”. You think one thing but then the author takes you to a much different ending. All of Eli Shekter’s books are fabulous, but Pyramid Base stands above the rest!
So, if you know of a novel that I am looking for, please let me know. Thanks!
August 27, 2010 1:11 pm at 1:11 pm #973621SJSinNYCMemberI really enjoyed Crime and Punishment. Its not a Jewish book though.

August 27, 2010 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm #973625noitallmrParticipantHa ha good to hear that I’m not the only guy here who hasn’t grown up! But tintins were great I think I still remember some of them- “A little more to the West” lol!!!
August 27, 2010 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #973626squeakParticipantI didn’t realize how much weltanschauung there was in the CR – I thought the OP was asking for some easy light reading, but the folks come back with epics such as Tintin and the works of Dr. Seuss! Astounding!

August 30, 2010 6:12 pm at 6:12 pm #973637SacrilegeMemberNot a huge reader (esp of Jewish books) but Sun Inside Rain (I’m pretty sure thats what it was called, was very good.
August 30, 2010 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #973638telegrokMember“A Separate Peace,” by John Knowles. Tells the story of two high-school boys at boarding school in the waning years of the Second World War. No objectionable scenes; the action takes place on the campus of the school, involves the relationships of students and their view of the war as it affects their lives. A tremendous novel, lavishly written.
August 30, 2010 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm #973639Sister BearMemberAhhhh we had to read “A Separate Peace” in school and I hated it. Compared to the other books it was not the worst.
Hearts of Gold is was a good book. They have a second one too. The plots not that obvious.
Deep Blue was okay and with a twist in the plot, kind of.
August 30, 2010 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #973640aqua blueParticipantDoes anyone know of any really good non-jewish novels that are a Eve Vogel style? (Her books are usually about some boarding school in england- or something of that type…) I’m a big reader and read all the jewish books in the stores which I happen to prefer.

August 31, 2010 1:47 am at 1:47 am #973642d aMemberHi guys! Your too funny! I did read TinTin, but I don’t like comics as good as a real good novel.
As for the Cat in the Hat, it’s too deep for me!
And yes, I try to read only Jewish books. Even though sometimes…I didn’t say anything….
August 31, 2010 3:47 am at 3:47 am #973643Deliberately EsotericParticipantanything by jodi picoult
August 31, 2010 4:44 am at 4:44 am #973645postsemgirlMembermw13- the will is really amazing. the author is Chaim Greenbaum.
Another amazing book is Switched Identities- I forgot the author but it’s about the holocust. I gotta agree that Pyramid Base is one of the best books out there. I also love the book Inquisition by Yair Weinstock.

I just finished reading it. But the whole time, I knew who Dan Nesher and Mr. Schwartz were. The end did not suprise me at all.
August 31, 2010 8:55 pm at 8:55 pm #973648tzippiMemberWasn’t the book called Switched Identity, not Identities?
August 31, 2010 9:05 pm at 9:05 pm #973649d aMembertzippi, yes and the author is A.B. Yishai. It was a good read, but as I said above, the ending was obvious (to me, at least).
August 31, 2010 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #973650ChossonMemberThere is two books; Double Identity, and Switced Identity
August 31, 2010 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #973651d aMemberChosson, who wrote Double Identity? Is there any connection to Switced Identity?
August 31, 2010 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #973652ChossonMemberI think Meyer Bendet wrote them.

September 1, 2010 10:54 pm at 10:54 pm #973660musictomyearsMemberdid anyone here read aleph-shin?
was it any good?
is it worth buying?
September 2, 2010 12:38 am at 12:38 am #973661d aMembermusictomyears, I stayed up all night reading it using a light from a cell phone (and remember, Alf Shin is printed in smaller text then a regular book). I know, I’m crazy!
And yes, it is a very good book. Buy the Alef Shin/Ten Lost book. (Alef Shin by itself is out of print)
September 2, 2010 12:45 am at 12:45 am #973662Dr. PepperParticipantIn a different thread it was mentioned that the same author (possibly using different names) wrote four books;
1) Aleph Shin,
2) Samsons Lion,
3) Every Man A Slave and
4) Ten Lost.
Supposedly they are very well written and researched and most readers find them very addicting.
If you can’t find it I’ll try to look it up.
September 2, 2010 12:51 am at 12:51 am #973663d aMemberSupposedly they are very well written and researched and most readers find them very addicting.
Doc, did you ever read any of them?
September 2, 2010 1:03 am at 1:03 am #973664Dr. PepperParticipantI read Aleph Shin and enjoyed it. The plot definitely took unexpected turns but at some point I figured out what would happen at the end.
Personally I can’t say how well researched the book was as I am unfamiliar with the streets in Iran, the flight controls on a fighter jet, the different chambers on a submarine and the geological makeup of the ground under the Aswan Dam. I am basing that on what other readers wrote. I did enjoy it and found it addicting.
I did not read the other three books.
September 2, 2010 1:24 am at 1:24 am #973665d aMemberTen Lost is a sequel to Alef Shin
When they came out with Ten Lost, Alef Shin was already sold out. So instead of reprinting Alef Shin by itself, they printed Alef Shin and Ten Lost in one volume.
September 2, 2010 3:53 am at 3:53 am #973666d aMemberTrue Identity is a sequel to Double Identity; both by Mayer Bendet
