April 6, 2015 12:54 pm at 12:54 pm #1070997ChortkovParticipantThere was a fascinating story about how Reb Vosner zt”l became enrolled in Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin (The First) in the first place. If anybody knows the details, please post them.
It went something like this: To get into Chachmei Lublin, a bochur would have to know 400 blatt gemara ??? ??. Young Shmuel Vosner was not ‘settled’ wherever he was, and was nothing near the 400 required. Nevertheless, he decided that the only way he would be able to shteig would be in the famous Lublin Yeshiva. When he arrived, Reb Meir Shapira zt”l was away. The Mashgiach at the time farhered him, and explained him that he wouldn’t make it. He was not welcome at Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin.
Somehow, through some ‘Hand of Fate’, dejected Shmuel Vosner met an old man at the train station, while waiting to journey back home. The old man got involved with him in conversation – and I forget the details, but it turned out to be R’ Meir Shapira himself and was impressed by something Shmuel Vosner said, and bought him back to Yeshiva.
The rest, as they say, is History…

I always laugh at your posts, 147. Why on earth do you add random bits of information – generally related to dates, times or Zionism – which have totally no connection to the thread, the post or anything your trying to say?
April 7, 2015 12:40 am at 12:40 am #1071003147ParticipantWhy on earth do you add random bits of information Yekke2:- Because I was making it my business to try & steer this topic away from any resemblance of Hesped, to fulfill the Biblical obligation of “veSomachto beChagecho”.
Relating any facets of Rav Wosner by definition is a Hesped, & cannot be covered up by feigning loopholes.
Just like introducing a topic on Shabbos by saying “it ain’t Shabbos talk” and going on into say a business topic, cannot be covered up by feigning loopholes.
BTW Yekke2:- You are cordially invited to our Seudas Yom ha’Atzmaut in just over 2 weeks time. Please let me know if you have a preference to come over on Yom ha’Atzmaut Mukdom on Thursday Iyyor 4th? or biZenmano on Friday Iyyor 5th? or to cover all Shitos:- How about late afternoon Iyyor 4th extending into evening of Iyyor 5th?
April 7, 2015 12:08 pm at 12:08 pm #1071004barlevParticipantThe story of him being accepted in yeshiva goes like this :
When Rav Wosner came for the entrance exam, he failed the test and wasn’t accepted. Dejected he went to the beis hamdresh and started learning. After some time Rav Shapiro walked into the beis hamdresh and asked Rav Wosner why he is sitting there learning, to which he responded “I’ve been traveling a few days to come for the test and my soul is thirsty for learning torah. The Rav Shapiro was so impressed that he accepted him on the spot, and as they say, the rest is history
April 7, 2015 12:11 pm at 12:11 pm #1071005barlevParticipantRav Wosner was asked why he was zoche to such a long life, he responded that he never got involved in machlokes
He received a bracaha that he would never need glasses or a cane, and although he lived till 102 he never used either!
April 7, 2015 12:15 pm at 12:15 pm #1071006barlevParticipantOver 100 hundred years ago, in the very beginning of the 1900’s, there was a young girl, with the last name of Shiff, who had a most beautiful and amazing voice. Her talents were nothing short of professional. She was the talk of all those that knew her. For a religious Frum girl in Vienna, Austria, coming from a traditional Torah home, professional singing was not an option.
News spread of her amazing and potential talent to a famous agent, who offered this young potential star, a very lucrative opportunity and career. Thrilled, she decided to discuss the matter with her parents. When the parents heard about this terrible news, they agreed they will do all within their power, to not allow it to be. The young girl refused to listen to her parents. Her father then took his daughter to their Rav, Rabbi Shlomo Baumgarten, who tried to convince the girl to abandon this career. Reb Shlomo, sensing that he had not swayed her, suggested that they go to Rabbi Yitzchak Meir – The Kapichinitzer Rebbe, who was in Vienna at the time. Immediately, the father went with his daughter to see the Rebbe. then spoke with the girl. “Tell me, my dear Jewish daughter, why do you want so badly to go into this line of work?”
The girl answered honestly. “It is because of the fame that I will find. l will be known throughout the world.”
The Rebbe closed his eyes, deep in thought, contemplating the aspirations the girl had just expressed. After a few moments, the Rebbe opened his eyes and began to speak. “Listen closely, my dear daughter. It is the dream of every young Jewish woman to be blessed with a child who will illuminate the world through his Torah learning. I give you my promise that if you now sacrifice your chance at fame, there will come a time when you will be blessed with a child who will light up the world. He will become the one of the Greatest Halachic authorities of his time, a Posek Hador. Your fame will come, but it will be through him, your son.”
The young girl wiped away her tears and thought deeply about the magnanimous promise the Rebbe had just made to her. She was a fine, young Jewish girl and so, after considering the offer, she accepted the Rebbe’s proposition. Rabbi Don Segal found this most earth shattering and amazing story in the Sefer Kehilot of Austria and decided to pursue the rest of the story. Rabbi Segal discovered that this girl eventually got married and had a son by the name of Shmuel. This Shmuel grew up to be, none other than, Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner, author author of Shevet Halevi, the Av Bet Din of Bnei Brak and a Posek Hador.
May we be zoche to raise such children and may we have tremendous nakhat from them ad 120!

April 7, 2015 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #1071008mw13ParticipantI saw a great pshat from R’ Vozner brought down in Dirshu: Why is it that at the seder we have an egg, hinting at aveilus, in remembrance for the korban chagiga, while we have a shankbone in remembrance of the korban peasch? Why don’t we have two eggs? Says R’ Vozner, there are shittos that hold we can indeed bring a pesach today, and according to those shittos we have nothing to mourn in regards to the korban pesach. But les man di’palig that today we cannot bring a chagiga.
I also heard a story that one friday night, while R’ Vozner was learning in Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, he accidentally moved something muktza. So as a tikkun, he took it upon himself to learn the entire Meschtas Shabbos that Shabbos. After a while, the lamps in the beis medrash went out, so R’ Vozner took his gemara outside to learn by the moonlight. As he was learning, R’ Meir Shapiro passed by and saw his talmud bent over, squinting to see the text. He then gave him two brachos: “Since you are bending over to be able to learn, you should never need a cane. And since you squinting to be able to learn, you should never need glasses.” And even though he lived till 101, R’ Vozner never needed a cane or glasses.

“Relating any facets of Rav Wosner by definition is a Hesped, & cannot be covered up by feigning loopholes.”
I don’t see why it should be any different than relating psakim and stories from the Chofetz Chaim.
