HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman shlit”a opposes any non-Mechallel Shabbos (or the like) from c’v joining the so-called Nacahal Chareidi (which is hardly Chareidi, most of it is daati and the remainder are chareidi dropouts) or any other part of the IDF.
Of course a number of years ago when Rav Shteinman, in response to a question, told someone that a certain Mechallel Shabbos should better join the IDF than loitering the streets and committing grave transgressions for which the punishment is kares, the regular liberal bloggeratti crowd jumped on it as a supposed endorsement of the Nachal Chareidi. Not that this the first time Rav Shteinman pointed out this error. Several years ago he told someone to better runaway to India than to let the IDF draft him into the Nachal Chareidi.
Take note, Sam. You’ve been peddling this canard every time I pointed it out over the past several years.
Recently Released Letter By Maran HaRav SHteinman To Hagon HaRav Don Segal Regarding Nachal Charedi
November 1, 2015 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #1111437MDGParticipantJoseph,
Those that quoted Rav Shteinman as being for Nachal Chareidi were taking him out of context.
You have also taken him out of context.
In the first article you cited (assuming that the source is reliable), Rav Shteinman says that his support for Nachal Chareidi was only for OTD bachurim. While it seems that he mostly does not support N”Ch, you can’t say he opposes it completely, which your title implies.
In the second article, Rav Shteinman is quoted as saying he did not know the intention of the person asking. Therefore he gave a brush-off of an answer. That’s hardly a source to rely on.

Its no just the “regular liberal bloggeratti”
There where protests thorughout meah shearim, I was present when eggs were thrown at Rav shtiemnan r”l.
Grafiti saying “shteinamn = Kook” (and I dont think it was meant as a compliment) is still visible in areas of meah shearim and beis yisroel.
Gedolim are allowed to change their minds, and circumstances often change too. But please dont rewrite history most of us have better memories than that
November 1, 2015 9:05 pm at 9:05 pm #1111439☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThat doesn’t mean he changed his mind, it could just mean the kanoim misunderstood him or disagreed with NC even for OTD.
“??? ??? ?? ???? ?? ???? ???” doesn’t sound like he changed his mind.
November 1, 2015 9:37 pm at 9:37 pm #1111440JosephParticipantUbiq, Rav Shteinman clearly said he was falsely used to attribute support of NC. Some idiot protesters are not a reliable source; and certainly not more reliable than Rav Shteinman’s own written and signed letter.
November 2, 2015 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #1111441Yosi7MemberJoseph- you must have much better eyes than me because I am unable to read the “signature” of rav Shteinman here. How do you know he signed it?

November 2, 2015 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #1111443apushatayidParticipantThe letter to Rav Don Segal Shlita. This is not a question of its veracity, or accuracy, rather one of practicality. How does a private letter to Rav Segal end up online? Was it done with the approval of both the writer and the reciepient? Either one? Is it a violaiton of the cherem d’Rabbeinu Gershon for someone to post the letter online and for us to read it? Just curious.
November 2, 2015 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #1111444JosephParticipantapy, are you equally upset that when Rav Shteinman a number of years ago advised that a certain Mechallel Shabbos should join the Nachal Chareidi rather than loiter the streets committing grave transgressions, that this private suggestion was publicized by the regular liberal loudmouths? (Even putting aside the fact that they omitted pointing out that the advice was specifically directed for someone who otherwise was engaging in issurei kares, and the loudmouths presented it as if it was some kind of generic advice for anyone not in yeshiva.)
November 2, 2015 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #1111445zogt_besserParticipantHas Rav Shteinman said/written anything about the shachar program?
November 3, 2015 4:36 am at 4:36 am #1111446apushatayidParticipantJoseph. Why do you assume I’m aware of everything ever publicised in the name of Rav shteinman? If such a letter was disseminated the same question applies. Who is making the decision to post private correspondence online? I’m aware of this letter because I happened to read the news site a little bit after it was put online. Not everyone has an agenda as difficult as it is for you to understand.
November 3, 2015 4:14 pm at 4:14 pm #1111447gavra_at_workParticipantIf he didn’t say it to me personally then it doesn’t count. Even if he did, there is no reason why I am Mechuyav to listen to him.

November 9, 2015 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #1111450JosephParticipantR. Yitzchok Hisiger, in his “Food for Thought” column in this week’s Yated, wrote about this letter being discussed here from Rav Shteinman shlit”a to Rav Don Segal shlit”a. R. Hisiger adds another conversation where Rav Dovid Soloveitchik shlit”a asked Rav Shteinman about his alleged support of Nachal Chareidi. After Rav Shteinman told Rav Dovid that he never suggested to anyone to enlist in Nachal Chareidi. Rav Shteinman added that he couldn’t stop parents who on their own suggested to their Mechallel Shabbos son to enroll in Nachal Chareidi.
