If you play and talk you end up singing, but off key.
December 16, 2013 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #1040296miritchkaMemberSyag Lchochma: When I tried it that way, I couldnt do it!
Aishes Chover: Do you pause when you say any of those comments? I’m not going to say its impossible cuz i can say really quick phrases while putting on eyeliner. But when i read this random fact a while back, I specifically look to see if people can talk while putting on eyeliner. (although it doesnt come up to often)
December 20, 2013 1:12 am at 1:12 am #1040297live rightMemberI am here to say that I too cannot play piano and talk at the same time. I cannot sing along with my playing either. but as LAB pointed out, its only when im playing both chords and lead. if I do talk or sing, I end up playing off beat and hitting the wrong keys. which is why I usually ignore people while playing.
with guitar, where its only chords, I can sing along and can probably even give a shiur while playing.
someone should do a research paper on this fascinating phenomenon.
December 20, 2013 1:34 am at 1:34 am #1040298Little FroggieMemberI wrote earlier my theory. Pure speculation, but a theory nonetheless.
December 20, 2013 3:35 am at 3:35 am #1040299HaLeiViParticipantYeah, but not very specific.
October 5, 2014 4:31 am at 4:31 am #1040300Patur Aval AssurParticipantI did a test. I was playing music and I read an article in a magazine at the same time and it didn’t affect the music (although it took me longer than normal to read the article.) Then I tried reciting “The Road not Taken” while playing and was unable to adequately do both at the same time. Then I recited it in my mind while playing and I did much better. So I don’t think it has to do with multitasking. I think there is something intrinsic in talking that is incompatible with playing music unless you are singing along to the music. My hypothesis is that they are two contradictory acts. It’s like singing one song while playing another song. Or like revolving your hands in opposite directions.
October 5, 2014 10:43 am at 10:43 am #1040301RandomexMemberWhat instrument do you play, PAA?
October 5, 2014 10:49 am at 10:49 am #1040302RandomexMemberI went back and read the first page – we’ve got quite a few musicians here, it seems 🙂
Maybe a YouTube channel can be set up that everyone can access to upload videos (moderated, of course) so we can hear everyone play?
Or a SoundClick/SoundCloud, and everyone can e-mail audio to some YWN address?
October 5, 2014 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #1040303Patur Aval AssurParticipant“What instrument do you play, PAA?”
I never said I was playing an instrument. Perhaps I was playing a record. But l’maan ha’emes I was playing an instrument. But I can’t give away too much personal information.
October 6, 2014 7:18 am at 7:18 am #1040304RandomexMemberYou couldn’t have been talking about playing a record – you could not be “do[ing] both at once” if your “playing” was not a continuous action.
October 6, 2014 10:23 am at 10:23 am #1040305cozimjewishMemberPAA – I thought my family was the only one with a record player in the 21st century!
BTW – i just tried talking while playing piano, and I could do both at the same time. Although, the conversation wasn’t really flowing in a logical sequence (meaning, I started talking about one random thing and then just started saying other random things that popped into my head.) Also, I often stopped talking for a moment when there was a pause, or I had to hold a note, in the song I was playing. But I was still talking while playing piano!
October 6, 2014 10:37 am at 10:37 am #1040306cozimjewishMemberAnother random fact – I’m learning to drive, and I often sing while I drive. If I’m signaling, then I automatically sing in time to the signal, which is really annoying coz then I try to sing at the right speed and I can’t 🙂
October 6, 2014 12:30 pm at 12:30 pm #1040307Patur Aval AssurParticipantI sing while driving all the time. Sometimes I get strange looks from other drivers.
October 6, 2014 1:10 pm at 1:10 pm #1040308cozimjewishMemberI don’t sing so loudly! (Aside from obvious tznius issues, I would be way too embarrassed 😉 ) But yeah it keeps me calm 🙂
October 6, 2014 1:29 pm at 1:29 pm #1040309sirvoddmortMemberyou can not say the m sound while smiling
you can with your tongue out. still technically a smile.

Nothing I said should change your thought. All I said was that the wording of my original post did not limit it to musical instruments; I never said that I actually have a record player.
October 7, 2014 12:53 am at 12:53 am #1040312cozimjewishMemberPAA – oh good so I’m back in the book of world records 😉
October 7, 2014 12:54 am at 12:54 am #1040313cozimjewishMemberNO PUN INTENDED!!! SERIOUSLY!!! I just reread my post – I would NEVER make such a corny joke!!! Sorry!!

Well I also never said that I don’t have a record player.

October 7, 2014 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm #1040316sirvoddmortMembera goldfish attention span is 3 seconds
This is a myth. I’m a goldfish and we actually…
Hey, look, a squirrel!
October 7, 2014 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #1040317cozimjewishMembersirvoddmort – you blew my cover! How did you know I was a squirrel?! And how did the mods approve that? Now everybody knows!! 🙁 🙁
October 7, 2014 11:13 pm at 11:13 pm #1040318thethinkingjewParticipantYou cant sneeze with your eyes open. (dont try it cos you will blow your brains out)
October 8, 2014 12:08 am at 12:08 am #1040319cozimjewishMemberIt amazes me how people can come up with the most RANDOM things! I mean, who exactly thought to calculate the attention span of a goldfish, of all things?! Or tried to figure out if you could sneeze with your eyes open?! LOL
October 30, 2014 4:54 am at 4:54 am #1040322Patur Aval AssurParticipantSo I did some further experimentation. I tried playing a song while saying something that I ostensibly know really well, namely Ashrei (although actually I’m not sure if I know Ashrei any better than “The Road Not Taken”), and was unable to do so. Then I tried reciting “Patur Aval Assur” which is presumably even simpler, also to no avail, and finally I moved on to just repeating a simple monosyllabic word and I still couldn’t do it (unless I put the word to the song). So I think my hypothesis still stands.
October 30, 2014 5:25 am at 5:25 am #1040323RandomexMemberPAA:
“(although actually I’m not sure if I know Ashrei any better than “The Road Not Taken”)”
LOL! (Though that’s unfortunate if it’s true…)
Is there a particular reason for this situation?
October 30, 2014 5:37 am at 5:37 am #1040324cozimjewishMemberPAA – Well then I must be amazing! ;P
October 30, 2014 5:54 am at 5:54 am #1040325👑RebYidd23ParticipantYou don’t blow your brains out if you try to sneeze with your eyes open. Either your eyes close or you don’t sneeze.
October 30, 2014 12:35 pm at 12:35 pm #1040326Patur Aval AssurParticipantRandomex:
I don’t understand the question.
October 30, 2014 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #1040327RandomexMemberAssuming you say Ashrei thrice daily on weekdays, why would you
not know it better than “The Road Not Taken?”
October 30, 2014 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm #1040328Patur Aval AssurParticipantTwo possibilities:
1) I recite “The Road Not Taken” thrice daily (or more).
2) Precisely because I recite Ashrei thrice daily, I don’t know it so well. But actually, as it would pertain to my experiment, this wouldn’t makea difference because even if I know Ashrei incorrectly, it is still something that doesn’t require active thought.
November 6, 2014 7:45 am at 7:45 am #1040329HaLeiViParticipantIt’s probably like trying to turn your foot while tapping your hand. Most people can’t do it. You are trying to pat attention to two outputs and that can’t be done. What might work is to rehearse your sentence and spit it out without paying attention to what it sounds like. Ask someone else if you sound coherent.
Do I?
