I keep on getting mixed messages. Is Yosef just R’ Ovadiah’s last name, or is it part of his Hebrew name as well (is R’ Ovadiah’s name ?’ ???? ?????? ???? or just ?’ ???? ??????)? Is R’ Ovadiah’s mother’s name pronounced Georgia (like the state of Georgia with the G sounding like a J) or Gorjia (like in Gorgeous with the G sounding like a hard G)? Also, do you add the title ?? or ??? when saying ?????? or do you just say the name without any titles?

On ywn, it says Chaim Ovadiah Yosef ben Georgia.( I believe it’s like the state Georgia, because that’s how the Sephardim pronounce Gimmel.) On other websites like matzav it says Chaim Ovadiah ben Georgia. Yosef is his family name, so in my opinion it would not be part of it. But however I have seen many bulletins say Chaim Ovadiah Yosef ben Georgia.

More significantly, I know many people who did not add names but made remarkable recoveries, and unfortunately some with added names, who did not; Needless to say, I wish the Godol haDor, Rav Ovadiah Yosef shlita, a speedy & expedient recovery, which he so duly deserves.

September 30, 2013 11:57 am at 11:57 am #976609simcha613ParticipantBump. Does anyone know for sure what R’ Ovadiah’s name is?
September 30, 2013 6:26 pm at 6:26 pm #976610wallflowerParticipantThe Hebrew edition Mishpacha claims that Yosef is, in fact, Rav Ovadiah’s middle name.
September 30, 2013 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm #976611koshermanParticipantHis name is Ovadia Yosef Chaim ben Jorgia as told to me by his grandson. Apparently his name was Ovadia Yosef Ovadia and somewhere along the way he dropped the second Ovadia.
September 30, 2013 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #976612besalelParticipanthis brother, who was recently niftar, was named naim ovadia. ovadia was the last name. in addition, maran is named abdulrahim yousef and his jewish name is ovadia yosef. his full name was therefore ovadia yosef ovadia. he dropped the second ovadia and adopted his middle name as his last name making it ovadia yosef. rav reuven elbaz who is a very sweet and genuine talmid chuchum added chaim to the beginning making his full hebrew name chaim ovadia yosef. i have this sneaking suspicion that when maran gets back he will drop the chaim as he is was well known to have had a different approach towards naming than rav elbaz. i can only chuckle as i envision maran’s reaction to the idea that rav elbaz added chaim to his name. his mother’s name was georgia as in the state which was a common name is baghdad.
September 30, 2013 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm #976613simcha613ParticipantChaim comes after Ovadiah Yosef? I thought it was added as a first name?
September 30, 2013 11:38 pm at 11:38 pm #976614Sam2ParticipantThe confusion stems from the fact that Yosef happens to be both his middle and family names. See the Hakdama to Yabia Omer where he calls himself Ovadiah Yosef ben Asher.
