Please pardon my naivete on the subject, however during the course of events over the last few days, I’ve noticed a number of people from the Satmar community, men and women, speaking with members of the media on the tragedy. I always thought that Satmar discouraged their followers from such public interactions with outsiders? Am I mistaken?

I believe so. I’ve never heard of such a thing. There are such “cults”, but Satmar is not one of them.

Do not believe the propaganda that Satmar hasidim (in all their flavors) are sub-human perverse misanthropes incapable of dealing with the real world.

You have a way with words; you made me smile.

    Thanks.

AKuperman…never believed that per se…however my only knowledge of Satmar is from Wikipedia, the book/film ‘The Chosen’ and the media coverage of when the Rebbe passed away and the ensuring power struggle between the sons.

yossi- generally speaking, the media is never the source for accurate information.

Your name sounds troll-worthy for your question and comment. And you became a member today? Sorry, I’m not biting.

Mammele – define troll worthy, please.

Indeed, I did become a member today as I wanted to asked this question…as I am/was truly curious. I am somewhat secular, but I do daven at a local Chabad shule here in Atlanta. I am sure once I go to Mincha/KS/Maariv tomorrow night, I could have easily asked the Rav there…but knowing this website and discovering ‘Coffee Room’, I decided to sign up and ask the question here and now :). I am pretty sure I mentioned at the start of my initial post that I am curious…not looking to throw a grenade.

You omitted illiterate, intolerant, uneducated, sadistic, exclusionary, perfidious, duplicitous, and racist.

Listen, I’m not here to argue, but the name you are using doesn’t quite sound secular, care to explain?

My father is Israeli (goes to shule once a year – guess on which day)…my first name is Yosef…after my great grandfather.

All besides the point…I was asking a sincere question…I never lived in places like Brooklyn, Jerusalem or Antwerp…but I did live two streets away from B’nei Brak for about 4 years (in Ramat Gan). Forgive me, my interaction with those outside of Chabad and Kipah Siruga has been limited.

Maybe you have people who “do their own thing” and buck the norm?

    Mammele:

YB is too sincere and not in-your-face enough to be a troll. Let him be.

Is a troll someone who “trolls” for fights?

TKND: That’s why I was trying not to be too argumentative.

It just so happens that someone named “Yossi Brach”, if I remember correctly, is a very vocal guy that sometimes talks on the Zev Brenner show on behalf of Satmar/R’Ahron. Would be weird if the name is merely a coincidence. And maybe I have the wrong name, but I don’t thinks so.

So I still think he’s playing us, although you might be right, so I’ll try to back off.

Reb Doniel: Maybe, but that would contradict the critics that say that nobody breathes in Satmar without his/her Rabbi’s approval.

No worries…I have always been fascinated with the Satmars, their history and I don’t mean that to be patronizing or insulting. The tragic events of earlier this week has brought the community to the forefront it seems.

Yossibroch who said “…however my only knowledge of Satmar is from Wikipedia, the book/film ‘The Chosen’ …”

Wikipedia is inherently unreliable since it reflect whomever wrote the article, though it often has useful bibliographies. It is especially unreliable on controversial topics in which partisans strive to manipulate the article (they have had a great deal of trouble with Palestinians and Zionists in this respect).

The author of “The Chosen” is a Conservative Rabbi trying to justify his going off the derekh. Consider it as good a source for understanding orthodox Jews as Der Sturmer was for understanding the holocaust (except that Potok never got into a fight with people who hang troublemakers – but he’s just as guilty as people such as Streicher)

I dont think the Chassidim in the Chosen were Satmar.

The Rebbe was anti-zionist before 1948, but accepted the state after 1948. This was the more general Charedi response but not the Satmar

AKuperma….So have me over for a Shabbaton?!?! If not, refer me to a good source for info…instead of just criticizing sources of data that I have already pointed out are incomplete/inaccurate.

There are individualists in sects of every bent.

I am amazed by how many people from RWO backgrounds are far more “cool” and multifaceted than I previously thought.

    #935333

Yeah, contrary to popular opinions, we’re not actually made in molds.
