I was wondering what everyone would suggest for a semi-sweet wine to be drunk on Purim?
aditionally, what do you get drunk on, on Purim (if you get drunk)
February 14, 2011 1:54 am at 1:54 am #748894observanteenMemberBrrr. Please stop this thread. I’m absolutely terrified of drunks!! Can’t you be Besimcha without getting drunk? Besides, if the men drink, the women aren’t Besimcha:(
February 14, 2011 1:58 am at 1:58 am #748895popa_bar_abbaParticipantCan’t you be Besimcha without getting drunk?
The gemara and shulchan aruch say to get drunk. Even if other shittos argue, I don’t think it’s proper to criticize something which is an established shitta in the gemara, rishonim, and acharonim.
February 14, 2011 2:03 am at 2:03 am #748896observanteenMemberBut, it also says that you can be yotzei if you take a nap. How ’bout doin’ THAT instead??
February 14, 2011 2:05 am at 2:05 am #748897popa_bar_abbaParticipantBut, it also says that you can be yotzei if you take a nap.
That is the other shittos. The shulchan aruch does not say that, and reading it in is absurd.
Besides, do the people who don’t drink actually take a nap? I think not.

I think those are sweet wines though (I want to get drunk not throw up)
Does that compensate for what I’ve done?
you didn’t do anything wrong, observateen, its a good topic to start and my wife totally agrees with you (and a lot of other wives i know) but we do it anyway and they concede in the end (I totally understand where you girls are coming from, and i wouldn’t want to be on the recieving end, and believe me if halcha didn’t say it I wouldn’t do it and hate it when bachurim get drunk at night or before the seudah b/c thenb theres no mitzvah to do it)

The Wolf (who has *never* been drunk in his life)
February 14, 2011 3:23 am at 3:23 am #748912oomisParticipantI love really, really cold Moscato di Asti. I think it’s Bartenura, but anything like that is my favorite type. I drink so rarely, that when I actually do take a glass of wine, i like it to be the semi-sweeet sparkly type.
February 14, 2011 3:32 am at 3:32 am #748913aries2756ParticipantIt is appropriate to just drink more than you would normally drink to feel the effect of the wine. Be sure that you and your wife are on the same page about this so that there are no hurt feelings or embarrassment. If you are not home for the seudah make sure you have a designated driver to get you and your family home if you plan on drinking more than usual. Also be sure you will not be making a fool of yourself, throw up, or do anything else your wife will be upset about. Also keep in mind what impression and example you are making on your children. Things have gotten way out of hand on Purim the past few years and many, many Rabbonim have become extremely stringent about NOT getting drunk on Purim.
February 14, 2011 3:42 am at 3:42 am #748914popa_bar_abbaParticipantPopa- You are saying it is a mitzva to lose control, not daven, insult people, beat your wife and kids, damage people’s belongings, etc. JUST HOW IS THAT?????
Do I need to respond to this?
February 14, 2011 3:44 am at 3:44 am #748915☕️coffee addictParticipantthank you aries! (i hope you’re feeling better btw)
my wife is my designated driver
I do throw up, but i try to minimize it (which is the reason why i want a good semi sweet wine, because the sugar is what makes you throw up (I tried semi-dry last year and it tasted horrible, so bad i couldn’t drink it so therefore i didn’t even get high)
oh and my kid is 17 months (I don’t think i’ll be making an example of anything)

February 14, 2011 3:53 am at 3:53 am #748919FerdParticipant@aries – your right about the throwing up issue….. I know you meant something totally opposite, so let me just inform you that there are teshuvos written about vomiting on Purim. Sounds hard to believe, but there are.
And please state the names of rabbonim who said NOT to get drunk on Purim.
Perhaps they said to drink wine, and not hard liquor (in fact that is what they said, unlike what you are saying).
And the one dais yochid rosh yeshiva who said people should not get drunk, have you ever been to his house on Purim? It seems he doesn’t really mind all that much…..

B. What is the difference? You think I can’t get drunk on wine?

I’m getting gold. You should get some; it’s good.

Several wines I like (I have simple tastes) are:
Baron Herzog black muscat
Bartenura Rosato (the best $6 bottle out there)
Rashi Claret.
The first two go with everything. The last goes with everything but chicken.

February 14, 2011 4:18 am at 4:18 am #748926yossi z.MemberThe point is NOT to get drunk, the point is to loosen your inhibitions.
When my father drinks he says a mymer which he wrote himself. When I drink I lose my inhibitions of getting involved in torah discussions. I now reiterate that the point is NOT to get drunk in the sense of getting slammed/stoned/or whatever other synonymous term you would like to use. One is supposed to drink more than what they are used to, to the point that they will feel the effects of the wine, loosening inhibition but not to the point of total inebriation. People unfortunately have taken the extreme in getting drunk to the point that one is supposed to drink to oblivion and this is not proper at all. If one loses control (I have seen quite a few wives who left by the purim seuda in yeshivah with looks of fear in their eyes because they never now what will happen) in that he doesn’t know what he is doing then he has gone too far.

I recommend a semi-dry (and dry is even better), if you are worried about throwing up. I like the “Selected” wines. And white is easier to get down than red. Trust me, I don’t like it either but after the first couple cups which you chase with some coke, the rest is much easier. Tizku L’mitzvos and Frielichen Purim!

February 14, 2011 5:11 am at 5:11 am #748934Ctrl Alt DelParticipantI have never understood why this “mitzvah” inspires so many to be mekayem it so diligently. I have no doubt in my mind that if someone would piously recite tehillim for a choleh instead of drinking himself to oblivion , that ad meah v’esrim, hashem would not hold it against him. Its a foolish pursuit. And illegal for anyone under 21 (at least in NY/NJ) to be mekayaim. Its also illegal for anyone to give alcohol to someone who is under 21. Our shuls Rav makes that perfectly clear right after maariv purim night. I am a mandatory reporter and I have, and will continue in the future to report distribution of alcohol to those under 21. Even on purim.

Is it a bad thing for people to be mekayem a mitzvah dilegently?
As for your tehillim hypothesis, depending on what shitta, Nisht Pashut. Would you say that about someone who doesn’t hear the megillah and reads tehillim?
What do you mean by “mandatory reporter?” I don’t claim to know how Hashem will judge after 120 but I wouldn’t be so confident that you are doing the right thing by reporting people to the police. Not at all. Especially since dinah dmalchusa dinah may not mean that you have a chiyuv to follow the laws, rather that the government has a right to take taxes, fines etc.

That’s only because you think it’s not a mitzvah. If it’s a mitzvah, then hashem will hold it against you if you don’t do it, even if you are doing another mitzvah.
Its a foolish pursuit. And illegal for anyone under 21 (at least in NY/NJ) to be mekayaim. Its also illegal for anyone to give alcohol to someone who is under 21.
In communist Russia, it was illegal to be mekayayaim the mitzvah of Bris Milah.
Our shuls Rav makes that perfectly clear right after maariv purim night.
There is no mitzvah to get drunk at night.
I am a mandatory reporter and I have, and will continue in the future to report distribution of alcohol to those under 21. Even on purim.
Do you know what the din of a moser is?
Lest anyone think that I am advocating young bochurim getting dangerously drunk, I am not. I am merely pointing out the weakness of these arguments.
February 14, 2011 6:05 am at 6:05 am #748942Ctrl Alt DelParticipantCanine, please read the law closely. If you buy it for someone who cant you have broken the law.”M”, I’m not sure what your getting at. Real, Iybyu has it right. You can report to the police and or social service agencies. I dont understand, have you not realized that drinking is a major problem in the jewish community on purim? And that it extends throughout the year too. Iyhbyu, a mandatory reporter means as follows. Anyone who is in the following professions MUST report distribution of alcohol to minor to the proper authorities. EMS, police, firefighter, physician, social work, nurse, psychologist, basically any licensed or certified “caretaker” must report certain things to the authorities when encountered. In our times, we should not be giving alcohol to those who should not be imbibing. Its that simple. Once again, why havent people latched on to mitzvahs that dont involve alteration of mental status. And anyway, I dont recall ad dilo yadah as being listed in azharot of anyone, its not part of the 613, why is there so much focus on this one almost insignificant mitzvah (if it can be called a mitzvah at all). It disturbs me how far people will go to defend this practice. Its not safe, its not legal, it should be stopped. i’m no prohibitionist but those under 21 should not drink. Period.
