What are the pros and cons of seatbelts? I know the general consensus is that they save lives but I heard of a lot of people who got injured by them. Does anyone have any real data that isn’t manufacturer sponsored that shows that seatbelts really help anyone? What was your experience?

June 27, 2018 8:09 am at 8:09 am #1547132Reb EliezerParticipantSomeone died because of seatbelts. He fell asleep in the back seat wearing seatbelts in the winter, the car skidded when hit by another car, made a short stop, and the seatbelts choked him.

From the US DOT -“In 2015, the use of seat belts in passenger vehicles saved
an estimated 13,941 lives of occupants 5 and older, etc.”June 27, 2018 11:46 am at 11:46 am #1547356☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantFrom the US DOT -“In 2015, the use of seat belts in passenger vehicles saved

June 27, 2018 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1548228Midwest2ParticipantI’m a statistic. I was riding in the passenger front seat when a car came out from behind a parked truck and hit us square on the side midway between the front and back doors. If I hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt I would have been thrown straight through the windshield.
The very few times that seatbelts contribute to a death are reported because they’re wild exceptions to the rule. Who would clock on a link saying, “Seatbelts saved 26 lives in the US last week?”
June 27, 2018 11:40 pm at 11:40 pm #1548688ubiquitinParticipantA big con to seatbelts is they increase the wait for those waiting for an organ.
Car accidents are a great source of organs from otherwise healthy individuals who now no longer need them. But due to seat belts and laws requiring there use more people survive car accidents thus decreasing the availability of heLrhy organs.
The same is sadly true f motorcycle helmetsJune 28, 2018 12:06 am at 12:06 am #1548695☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIn case you were not being sarcastic.
