If a recipe calls for a preheated oven, how long do you preheat it for? I.e. Directions say preheat oven to 425 but for how long?
December 15, 2010 10:19 pm at 10:19 pm #719492blinkyParticipantah men in the kitchen:) When you press preheat you set it for 425 degrees, and when the oven is that temperature the oven makes a beep signaling that its that temperature. What are you cooking?
December 15, 2010 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #719493Peanut ButterMemberUntil the temperature in it reaches 425. Usually you will hear a beep, unless you have an older version/non digital. In that case I’m not sure.
December 15, 2010 10:23 pm at 10:23 pm #719494Peanut ButterMemberOr you can just Cha Cha it.
And Blinky, I am very well versed in my kitchen and cooking…jst please don’t tell my future wife!
December 15, 2010 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm #719495Pashuteh YidMemberBlinky, I thought you meant to say, what are you smoking?
Seriously, in most older ovens, the red light will go off when it reaches the set temperature.

Why not? It will give her a break!
Pashuteh- ha! but 425 is high but not that high
December 15, 2010 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm #719497WIYMemberIts an older oven the oven was turned on a good 15 minutes ago red light still on.
December 15, 2010 10:38 pm at 10:38 pm #719498WIYMemberIts an older oven the oven was turned on a good 15 minutes ago red light just turned off. Thanks Pashuteh Yid!
December 15, 2010 11:25 pm at 11:25 pm #719499Pashuteh YidMemberWIY, the red light will go on and off while cooking, because when the temp drops, the thermostat will turn oven back on, and when it gets hot enough, it will turn it off again.
So the first time, it will not go off until the temp is reached, and that is a good indicator that you have finished preheating.
December 15, 2010 11:50 pm at 11:50 pm #719500deiyezoogerMemberYou can buy a oven thermameter its very cheap.
December 15, 2010 11:53 pm at 11:53 pm #719501deiyezoogerMemberjst please don’t tell my future wife!
See my thread about men in the kitchen. my wife loves when I cook but hates the mess I leave behind but thats the deal; I cook, she cleans.

Because then all of a sudden she will be too tired ect. to do it;) I know women!
December 16, 2010 3:01 am at 3:01 am #719504ItcheSrulikMemberI can’t believe you people take such fancy ovens for granted. In my house our oven doesn’t have a red light. We preheat the oven before we start doing anything and it’s hot enough when it’s time to put the food in. NO, this is not bochurishe cooking, my mother does it that way too.
December 16, 2010 3:12 am at 3:12 am #719505TheGoqParticipantthe oven is that square shaped thing with the knobs right?
December 16, 2010 4:00 am at 4:00 am #719506oomisParticipantDepends on the oven. It means to preheat to that degree, it can take 15 minutes or more, depending.
December 16, 2010 4:36 am at 4:36 am #719507deiyezoogerMemberpreheating the oven is important so when a receipe says preheat you gotta listen and make sure you wait until the oven is the reaches that temp.

Thanks I feel smarter now 🙂 I have spent time in the kitchen but thats mostly helping out with dishes…I have limited cooking experience. Especially in terms of ovens…Maybe its time I learned.
December 16, 2010 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #719509PosterMemberI have an older oven which is non digital, I have a thermometer. Its fantastic.
December 21, 2010 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #719510lakewoodwifeParticipantActually, preheating is not so important unless you are baking a cake. When I am baking (cookies, cake, etc) I try to preheat the oven when I start the recipe, but if I forget “oh, well!” unless it’s a delicate cake it is usually not a problem. For food (chicken, kugel, veggies) it is almost never needed, just add a couple of minutes to cooking time (which usually aren’t so precise anyway). For the record, one should not preheat an oven for baking bread. It will rise higher if it goes into a cold oven.
December 21, 2010 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm #719511popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf you can’t make it on a barbecue or in a deep fryer, it’s not worth making.
