Is it a lack of Hishtadlus not to buy a ticket?

January 8, 2016 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm #1132189popa_bar_abbaParticipantPowerball is goyish. Power is kochi v’otzem yadi.
January 8, 2016 4:52 pm at 4:52 pm #1132190YW Moderator-42ModeratorThe jackpot for tonight’s Mega Millions drawing $165 million. Is it lack of hishtadlus not to enter that? Why should entering an $800m drawing be considered more proper hishtadlus than $165m?
My general hanhaga is that when a jackpot gets this high, I buy a ticket in the other lottery.
January 8, 2016 5:09 pm at 5:09 pm #1132191☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt is a lack of bitachon to buy a ticket. If Hashem wanted you to win, he would let you find the winning ticket in the street.
January 8, 2016 5:18 pm at 5:18 pm #1132192HashemisreadingParticipantit is proper hishtadlus to buy a ticket. Hashem wants you to win, but he wants it to come through buying a ticket, because He hides in teva.
January 8, 2016 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #1132193☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt is not hishtadlus to buy a ticket. There is no reasonable chance of winning. It is a waste of money.
January 8, 2016 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #1132194HashemisreadingParticipantits showing a lack of bitachon by saying there is no chance of you winning.
January 8, 2016 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #1132195☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt is showing a lack of bitachon by saying you have no chance of finding $700 million in the street.
It is showing a lack of seichel to have hope that you’ll win.
The lottery is a tax on stupid people.
January 8, 2016 5:49 pm at 5:49 pm #1132196Sam2ParticipantDY: If you can afford the two dollars it’s probably proper to buy the ticket. It’s a waste of money, sure, but it’s a waste of meaningless money.
January 8, 2016 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #1132197☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think the Steipler was against it because having in the back of your mind that you might win breeds irresponsibility.
January 8, 2016 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #1132198HashemisreadingParticipantDaasyochid: Someone will win. And then no longer will you be calling him stupid.
January 8, 2016 6:34 pm at 6:34 pm #1132199newbeeMember“The lottery is a tax on stupid people.”
I recently read a story about a guy who on a hunch bought 10 tickets at a gas station and won over a hundred million even though he usually did not buy. “hey you never know”
January 8, 2016 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #1132200newbeeMemberSpending $1-2 on a ticket is neither bitachon nor hishtadlus.
It can be a good thing if it gives you hope and is productive.
It can be a bad thing if you don’t win and leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth and makes you angry or bitter after even subconsciously.
Make sure its not the later.
January 8, 2016 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #1132201newbeeMemberThe real question you have to find out is, being that it would be irresponsible to buy $10-$20 worth of tickets but not $1-$2:
has anyone actually won with only buying 1 ticket?
January 8, 2016 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #1132202WolfishMusingsParticipantWhen the pot gets really large, I buy a single ticket.
I understand that the odds against winning are astronomical. So, why do I buy it?
Entertainment.
For $2, I get to fantasize for a few hours about what I would do if I won. $2 for a few hours entertainment is a pretty good value.
The Wolf
January 8, 2016 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #1132203☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThat’s fine. For me, if that was entertainment, I could fantasize for $2 less than you do.
January 8, 2016 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #1132204MDGParticipantI heard a great vort from Rabbi Frand.
When the poweball reaches several hundred million dollars, people start thinking, “What if I won? What good could i do? Would I be in charge of the Tsedakah fund or would I hire someone? ….”
What are the chances of winning powerball, about 1 in 170 million. What are the chances of getting in a machloket with someone? Far far higher. It’s almost inevitable that we will disagree with someone sometime.
We should think about how to better handle a machloket, as it’s far more realistic and pertinent.
January 8, 2016 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #1132205newbeeMemberwolf: “For $2, I get to fantasize for a few hours about what I would do if I won. $2 for a few hours entertainment is a pretty good value.”
I agree with you in theory, but can you honestly say after fantasizing for all that time and you dont win there are no negative side effects?
Also, why only a few hours? If you buy the ticket days in advance you can stretch it out for days no?
January 8, 2016 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm #1132206YW Moderator-42ModeratorI consulted with my local Navi and he advised me that squeak was a few numbers off but I have the winning numbers.
January 8, 2016 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm #1132207squeakParticipantOf course I am off, those are powerball not mega.
Mega are: 11, 39, 51, 57, 75, 2
January 8, 2016 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm #1132208WolfishMusingsParticipantAlso, why only a few hours? If you buy the ticket days in advance you can stretch it out for days no?
Techinically, yes, but I do think about other things during the day. It’s not like I think about it every moment of the day after I buy it. 🙂
The Wolf
January 10, 2016 1:01 am at 1:01 am #1132209YW Moderator-42ModeratorI didn’t win the Mega Millions. So lechira I will find the winning Powerball ticket in the street.
January 10, 2016 1:20 am at 1:20 am #1132212☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI bought the megamillions ticket and copied down the numbers. Turns out, they were the right numbers, but now I can’t find the ticket.
If anyone finds it in the street, please let me know.
TIA.

January 10, 2016 2:53 am at 2:53 am #1132217yaakov doeParticipantI figure that buying a ticket and winning is the best way to find my long lost 3rd and 4th cousins as well as classmates from kindergarten.

January 10, 2016 4:47 am at 4:47 am #1132223miamilawyerParticipant“the lottery is a tax on stupid people”
Actually, as wolf said its entertainment and more than that, when the numbers are this high, it’s a good bet. The reason. If you have a 1/3 chance of winning something, and each ticket is one dollar, it’s a good bet if you win more than 3 dollars since odds are if you play three times, you will win once. The same applies to a jackpot like this. Powerball odds are one in 175 million so a 900 million jackpot is a smart bet even though odds are you wont win it. Also, I realize due to taxes and the lump sum deduction and the possibility of two ore more winners it’s not so simple, but when it gets this high, others have built the jackpot up to where it makes mathematical sense to dream.
January 10, 2016 5:09 am at 5:09 am #1132224JosephParticipantI WON! I WON!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING TO ME!!!

January 10, 2016 5:43 am at 5:43 am #1132226HolalaParticipantCome on guys be serious. Person from Staten Island won mega millions. No one won power ball jackpot today good luck to all who bought. If u win u spend everything with a cheshben don’t blow it all on one shot.
January 10, 2016 5:55 am at 5:55 am #1132227HolalaParticipantWhy shouldn’t someone buy a lottery ticket??? If hashem wants to give u money he wants u to do something for it that’s called hishtadlis. Just imagine that u want to give someone a present lets say a car and this person couldn’t ever afford a car, and u call him up and say: surprise!!! I bought u a brand new car come with a car service and pick it up from my house, and he says what? A car service? Bring the car somehow to me. It’s like gambling maybe when I arrive somthing is going to happen to the car or he’s going to change his mind and I’m not going to get the car and its like gambling because I’m paying $7-8 for the car. What would u say about such a story? The person is crazy right ? Well whoever says this is gambling listen to the story this way hashem says hey my son I have a present $900m just go to a store and pick up a card that has the code to the money. And the these people who say that it’s gambling would answer, sorry hashem it’s gambling I’m not paying two bucks u bring it to me deliver the card with first class mail and that’s all. It also says in the torah that u can’t say don’t do anything hopefully hashem is going to make a ness. Whoever says that lottery is gambling I want to see if u have an answer to this. And if u ever thought of it this way? Ur missing a little emunah in hashem
