if this is going to become a scotch vs bourbon machlokes so be it
but i need some information
i have to bring a bottle of whiskey to a Sholom Zochor this Shabbos.
im tired of seeing glenthis and glenthat and would like to bring bourbon for a change. i heard woodford reserve is good.
but is anyone going to drink it?
in other words, bottom line question, is bourbon anywhere near as popular as scotch or only a small minority of people that like it?
December 2, 2010 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #731303SacrilegeMemberReal men drink Bourbon.
December 2, 2010 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #731304YW Moderator-80Memberokay but what percentage approx of the general Jewish drinking population is this?
December 2, 2010 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #731305popa_bar_abbaParticipantTry a rye.
December 2, 2010 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #731306YW Moderator-80Memberwill many people drink rye?
and which way is more popular, with or without seeds?
December 2, 2010 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #731307SacrilegeMemberProbably few 😉
Seriously tho, it depends. If you go to a kiddush there are always more Scotches than Bourbons but the few bottles of Bourbon are always polished off.
So good to know there are a few good men out there…

okay then bourbon it is
December 2, 2010 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #731309YW Moderator-80Memberso sac do you have an opinion on woodford reserve?
and if anyone knows bptotty please let him know i would like him to chime in here
thanks
December 2, 2010 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #731310arcParticipantsac is right that real men drink bourbon and though there are normally less options the bourbons tend to go faster.
Woodford is a good choice because it’s smoother than most bourbons so many people will drink it.
Mazel Tov!
December 2, 2010 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm #731312SacrilegeMemberWoodford is a good choice because its non-threatening. Its recognizable to those who arent connoisseurs, it isnt complex, it doesnt feel like you are swallowing acid, and of course, the price is right.
December 2, 2010 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #731313WolfishMusingsParticipantReal men drink Bourbon.
I guess I’m not a real man. I don’t drink either.

You’re an Angel 😉
December 2, 2010 4:49 pm at 4:49 pm #731315popa_bar_abbaParticipantDon’t feel bad. Wolves drink water, and they’re pretty fierce.
On the other hand, do you chase down moose and eat them off the carcass? Because if you don’t, you may need to at least drink bourbon.
December 2, 2010 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #731316gavra_at_workParticipantBring something everyone will drink.
Something strong, a man’s drink.
Real Diet Coke.
The one of a kind.
Mazel Tov 🙂
December 2, 2010 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm #731317popa_bar_abbaParticipantseriously, if you are buying it to make the drinkers happy, get a scotch.
While you’re at it, get one that is not sherry cask so everyone will be comfortable with it.
December 2, 2010 5:03 pm at 5:03 pm #731318SacrilegeMemberpopa
I know some heavy drinkers… they all prefer Bourbon.
Scotch is a status symbol.
December 2, 2010 5:04 pm at 5:04 pm #731319YW Moderator-80Memberi want to make me happy in addition to the drinkers, and im tired of seeing glenploni
i dont know if its sherry cask or not but cRc says woodford reserve is: “Recommended”
December 2, 2010 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm #731320popa_bar_abbaParticipantbourbons are by definition aged in new charred oak casks. That is why they are popular among yeshivish people.
That is also why it is funny that bourbon is now the most problematic.
December 2, 2010 5:09 pm at 5:09 pm #731321AinOhdMilvadoParticipantPeople will tell you that scotch and bourbon are something you have to “acquire a taste for”.
I can’t figure out why.
I can understand “acquiring a taste for” something that is good for you, like broccoli or spinach, but alcohol? – Sorry, I don’t get it.
December 2, 2010 5:10 pm at 5:10 pm #731322YW Moderator-80Memberi dont get it either
but then i dont get liver either

Are you kidding? Which part don’t you get?
It makes you feel good.
December 2, 2010 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #731324YW Moderator-80Memberit doesnt make me feel good
it makes me feel confused
and it makes me feel like i accidentally sterilized my mouth with rubbing alcohol instead of the thermometer
and it makes my chest feel like i swallowed boiling jalapeno juice
i keep trying though
so many people talk about how it is like heaven
December 2, 2010 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm #731325arcParticipantI believe the alleged issues with bourbon are the fact that they may be jewish owned and therefore chometz sheavar on pesach.
I dont know if I believe the issues but I cant bring myself to drink anything on the list just in case. I guess B”H I have a better heart than head.
December 2, 2010 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #731326bptParticipant“I would like him to chime in here”
Are you kidding? I see a post on booze, and you think for a BP minute,I’m not in on the action?
The only thing I woould add is this: any of the Kentucky batches are good and you can get something nice for $35 – $50. Woodford is a good choice. The Wild Turkey, Rare Breed we have now, is a bit too high a proof for my liking (101), so aim for something a bit lighter (in case I stop by 🙂
December 2, 2010 5:50 pm at 5:50 pm #731327bptParticipantAnd Sac, real men drink bourbon, but real RICH men drink scotch. Give me a choice of 21 y/o scotch or a bourbon of the same age, and I’m off to the highlands!
December 2, 2010 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm #731328chesednameParticipantmod 80
if your price range is in the 30’s you won’t get better than woodford reserve. it’s an excellent choice, go with it.
ps if you don’t like bourbon or scotch try amaretto.
December 2, 2010 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm #731330TheGoqParticipantReal men never drink and drive (i know the original post was about a Shalom Zochor and would not be applicable) but seriously if u imbibe take a cab home
December 2, 2010 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #731331YW Moderator-80Memberthank you chesed
actually i tried amaretto a few years ago and i cant believe how great i thought it was
i kept giving it to friends to try and everyone seemed to like it
then my brother-in-law tasted it
he said it tastes like robitussin
i tried it again and he was right
i never drank it again
how psychological are our tastes.
December 2, 2010 6:12 pm at 6:12 pm #731332lkwdfellowMemberNot sure what real men drink, but personally I really like bourbon much better than scotch.
Mod-80 – If you want to bring something that’s “shoveh l’chol nefesh” – try a scotch that’s in a bourbon cask. One great bottle is Auchetoshen classic, it runs about 30-32 bucks & is enjoyed by both scotch & bourbon drinkers!
December 2, 2010 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #731333YW Moderator-80Memberim already set on the woodford but thank you
December 2, 2010 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm #731334squeakParticipantGive me a choice of 21 y/o scotch or a bourbon of the same age
We can’t give you that choice, because bourbon is aged only 2 years.
December 2, 2010 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #731335bptParticipantPlease Sac, tell me how you manange to get that past the Mods :D. From time to time,I get the EDITED potch, and need to know how to skirt the line, without getting whacked.
I paused for a min before approving it but then i thought: no I’m reading too much into it, knowing the poster I’m sure its a benign comment.
December 2, 2010 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #731336YW Moderator-80Member1 bourbon year is approx equal to 10 scotch years
you know like the dog and cat year thing

Are you nuts?! No bourban man will go near any scotch. I’ve already converted two of my scotch sons-in-law to bourban, because that’s where the real flavor is. Woodford is ok, but not my first choice.
December 2, 2010 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm #731342bptParticipant” I’m sure its a benign comment. “
Good call, 80. After all, Sacrilige is such an eidel maidel!
December 2, 2010 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm #731343lkwdfellowMemberarc – please read what I wrote: it’s a scotch that’s in a bourbon cask. Additionally, I wrote that it’s “shoveh l’chol nefesh” – not that it’s shoveh to bourbon. Chas v’sholom, I would never say that a scotch is shoveh to a bourbon. Rather, it can be enjoyed by both scotch & bourbon drinkers, as it has the taste of both.
December 2, 2010 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #731344SacrilegeMember“Sacrilige (sic) is such an eidel maidel!”
You have no idea 😉
December 2, 2010 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #731345arcParticipantIm saying it isnt shoveh to bourbon and half the taste isnt bourbon and half isnt scotch
December 2, 2010 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #731346lkwdfellowMembercherrybim – trust me, I’m also a pretty strict scotch drinker. I’m not converted like your sons-in-law, I have been for many years. However, on the rare occasion that I come to a Kiddush & there’s no bourbon left – scotch in a bourbon cask will do b’dieved. But, it’s certainly no subsitute for my regulars – Baker’s, Maker’s Mark, Corner’s Creek, Rowan’s Creek, etc.
December 2, 2010 8:57 pm at 8:57 pm #731347arcParticipantI bought Rowans creek recently. did you recommend it in the bourbon thread? it’s pretty good, better taste than corner creek imo.
December 2, 2010 9:09 pm at 9:09 pm #731348lkwdfellowMemberarc – yes, I highly reccomend it. It’s my one of my favorites. It is better than Corner Creek, but usually a bit more expensive than Corner Creek.

Did you ever try Four Roses, is it any good?
December 2, 2010 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #731350arcParticipantThere was a small difference I think it was $33 instead of $30
December 2, 2010 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #731351lkwdfellowMembercherrybim – sorry, meant to say – trust me, I’m also a pretty strict BOURBON drinker, NOT SCOTCH. I guess I already had 1 l’chayim too many l’koved Chanuka….
December 2, 2010 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm #731352YW Moderator-80Memberactually i might just go with Glenfiddich 50 Year Old
