Is there anything wrong with pony sheitels?

The fact that you knew to even ask indicates you know that there is.

    #778314

do you think there is a problem with them, msk?

Not necessarily. I have a friend who’s a chumrah queen and is always finding something wrong with nearly everything. When I ask my LOR, it usually turns out to be one of her made-up chumrahs.

No there is nothing wrong with pony sheitels why would you even ask?

There is NOTHING wrong, i think this is a silly thing to ask. If you think its an issue- discuss it with your rav!

OK, spill the beans. Who told you not to?

Uch, You want to know if you can wear a shaitel thats made out of pony hair! 🙂

    #778321

If anything, I think they are very tznius.

It covers the front of your hair unlike a fall and it isnt loose and wild like a full shaitel thats worn down.

perhaps you should ask if there is a problem with wearing ANY sheitel. i would contend that there is very little tznius when a woman wears a sheitel and i think most women (deep down) would agree with me

Whats the issue with ANY sheitel?

If there is a prob, should we be walking round with tichels all day?

    That’s not a bad idea.

I had the same question. And I’m not a “tznius nut”; I like dressing trendy. When I was engaged and going to kallah classes, I discussed with my kallah teacher the doubts I had about pony shaitels. She told me that while many Rabbonim will pasken that they’re ok, it’s a sensitivity which I (& some others) have toward wearing that style. So while I’m tempted to buy a pony shaitel now for the summer months, something is holding me back. Deep down inside it bothers me. If deep down inside you feel it might not be proper, don’t buy one (sometimes easier said than done).

can’t any long sheitel be made into a pony tail?

    #778327

Pony hair is not recommended for making sheitlach. The pony may have been used for avoida zoro.

There is a problem if you wear it on the left side. A pony on the right side is is lchatchilla kosher.

    chumrah queen .

Care to share? I’m always on the lookout for 1-upsmanship (or in this case 1-upspersonship)

Pony sheitels, like long sheitels, seem designed for look-at-me-I’m-cute.

i dont think there is anything really wrong with it except that in some people it may not cover their hair so well (by the ears and maybe in the back?).

I wear one all the time. Can’t see why anyone thinks there is something wrong with it. I agree with “whatrutkgabt”. But, I do have friends and family who won’t wear a pony sheital.

Shouldn’t they be called ponytail sheitels? Pony sheitel actually does sound like the sheitel is made from young horsehair.

it is clearly not black and white, the reason why some might have this sensitivity is because when married women cover thier hair they are making a statement in tznius that they are not free range any more, and that no male other then their husband should chalilah be attracted to them, therefore when one wears a hair covering that makes it impossible to tell if they are covering their hair or not, or if it is an overly attractive shaitel, then it goes against this reason for covering the hair… therefore it could be a feeling that overly long and stylish shaitels or shaitels that resemble unmarried girls may not be in the proper light of this mitzvah

There’s no mitzva to be more machmir than our poskim, who have not assired it.

I remember laughing when my teacher came to school wearing a pony sheitel; it was the first time I saw one, and I thought she was copying us kids.

Actually, it made me picture a pony wearing a sheitel.

    #778340

For those trying to understand the issue with pony shaitels, I once heard the explanation that since pony tails are worn by a very large percentage of frum teenage girls, it signifies a “besula” and a married woman, an “aishes ish” is not supposed to look like she are unmarried, which she may be confused for if she has the same hairstyle.

That’s why many poskim in Eretz Yisrael have an issue with married women wearing pony shaitels.

“That’s why many poskim in Eretz Yisrael have an issue with married women wearing pony shaitels.”

    Like who?

And why have not the rabbonim/poskim in the rest of the world done the same?

    #778342

There are a lot of tznius regulations that are common in Eretz Yisrael and not chutz la’aretz… Its just that E”Y has higher standards..nothing to hard to comprehend about that

Why would a married woman want to look like a unmarried teenager by wearing a ponytail sheitel, bobby socks (even over flesh colored tights), sneakers or demin skirts? PLEASE EXPLAIN!

it’s a casual look. some might feel it is undignified for a frum, married woman.

there was a similaar discussion a little while back about a certain fabric & whether it is problematic or not since it is generally used to make pants or skirts of a caual/chilled out nature.

    #778345

O please Shrek lets not start that again

i seriously almost started laughing when i read the op. unlike band falls, i’ve never had a question about a pony shaitel! its interesting to see the reasons why people may see it as ‘untznius’. But like cherrybim said “There’s no mitzva to be more machmir than our poskim, who have not assired it.”

“If there is a prob, should we be walking round with tichels all day?”

why are you asking about wearing tichels all day as if its a bad thing? there are many people (myself included) who prefer to wear tichels or ONLY wear tichels.

    “That’s not a bad idea.”

i already said that i prefer to wear a tichel, but i must admit that i am much more covered up with a sheitel than a tichel. i am not so makpid to pull it forward if it slips back, and the hair at the base of my neck is not covered, whereas both are not an issue with a sheitel.
