I have lots of unopened play dough. Anyone know if I have to get rid of it before pesach?
April 4, 2012 6:16 pm at 6:16 pm #1118446Sam2ParticipantGood shaila. Assuming it’s a brand that actually uses flour in the paste, it’s still probably Nifsal Me’achilas Hakelev so probably not. That will take some research though to see how it’s made and what happens if people/dogs eat it.
April 4, 2012 6:50 pm at 6:50 pm #1118447TheReaderParticipantyes, chometz. do a google search ‘play dough chometz’; most lists list this as chometz.
April 4, 2012 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #1118448kingdavidParticipantI heard by shabbos hagadol drasha that you should get rid of it since it has chumetz in it and they make it in a way that if a child eats it they should not be harmed (so that’s edible chumetz)
Besides if you sell chuetz to the goy then you can sell this too.
April 4, 2012 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #1118449Shticky GuyParticipantNo you dont need to get rid of it. It can for sure be sold lechol hadayos. Chometz that has been changed into something else thru an action even if it is still edible can al pi halacha even be used on pesach. But for play dough this is not advisable as the kids will get it under their fingernails etc
April 4, 2012 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #1118450yitayningwutParticipantYou don’t have to get rid of it.
April 4, 2012 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #1118451hello99ParticipantIt must be sold as it is edible Chametz.
April 4, 2012 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #1118452nitpickerParticipantplay dough is basically flour water lots of salt and some color.
you can easily find a recipe to make your own.
it has so much salt as to make it unpleasant but not completely inedible. sell it with your other chometz.
shticky guy:
How has it been changed into something else? I have always heard that play dough is to be considered chometz and needs to be sold or disposed of.
April 4, 2012 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #1118453BSDMembernitpicker-I spoke to a mechaber of a hilchos pesach sefer who told me exactly what Shticky is saying-It can be used on paysach even if it is edible since it was changed and designated for play dough. It may not be advisable but it is technically muttar.
April 4, 2012 11:35 pm at 11:35 pm #1118454ShrekParticipantsell it with your chometz. even if you don’t sell “real” chometz you can sell it. same goes for all those cute projects the little kiddies make with pasta. (why do they do that? anyone know?)
April 5, 2012 2:24 am at 2:24 am #1118455nitpickerParticipantok, rabbannim can disagree. people I trust have always told me otherwise.
April 2, 2015 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #1118457Sam2ParticipantI am Chozer from what I said two years ago. It is a children’s toy and therefore made to be not harmful if eaten. Therefore, any brand that uses actual flour in it (most brands do) is Chametz Gamur D’Oraisa.
April 2, 2015 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #1118459👑RebYidd23ParticipantJust burn it. Start now because this will take a long time.
April 3, 2015 12:24 am at 12:24 am #1118463YW Moderator-29 👨💻ModeratorWhy does anyone think it is not a problem to have chametz under your fingernails knowing that those fingernails will be in the kid’s mouth? Now if you said TOEnails, I could understand your annoyance. Having chometz anywhere on a kids hands would bring an almost guaranteed probablility of chometz on surfaces, mouths etc.
April 3, 2015 12:32 am at 12:32 am #1118464Sam2ParticipantThis Chametz under the nails thing is a bit ridiculous. Wash your kids’ hands when they’re dirty. Who has Chametz close enough to the Zman Issur and then doesn’t wash their hands for the next two hours at least? I’m very confused. If it’s washed with soap, it’s Nifsal NeiAchilas HaKelev.
Jewish Thinker: It doesn’t matter what dogs *do* eat. It matters what they can and won’t stop after tasting it and won’t severely negatively affect them.
April 3, 2015 12:33 am at 12:33 am #1118465YW Moderator-42ModeratorPosts from 2 years ago seem to be answering 2 separate questions: does it need to be gotten rid of? and does it need to be sold? There are some people who don’t sell “real chometz”. The question is, can these people sell play dough or do they need to completely rid themselves of it?
Then there is the question of it needs to be sold or put away at all. Most people seem to work under the assumption that you do need to put it away and/or sell it. Shticky guy seems to have an interesting kula to not necessitate this

I am one of those people. I eat it all or give it away.
April 3, 2015 8:30 am at 8:30 am #1118469YW Moderator-42ModeratorDr. Hall, would you keep play dough in your possession?

I think I have heard Shticky’s savarah before.
