If you know how pig Latin works, you will understand this sheila:
Are you allowed to say hello in pig Latin?
I think, no for obvious reasons but yes, maybe because my kavana is to say hello….
If you understood, tell me what you think….my whole family is plotzing to get an answer.

May 17, 2013 3:12 am at 3:12 am #953221Sam2Participant… That is an awesome Shaila. You just made my night. I would think that it’s Muttar. I believe I once heard someone quote R’ Shlomo Zalman that it’s Muttar to say “hello” in Hawai’ian. Presumably this is the same.
May 17, 2013 5:38 am at 5:38 am #953222Shopping613 🌠ParticipantHow do you say hello in Hawaiian? Why is it similar?

Not pronounced the same.
May 17, 2013 8:44 am at 8:44 am #953224resident of ds9Membermaybe pronounce it with the “ay” sound that you have in “maybe” not the sound that you have in “hi”

May 17, 2013 11:44 am at 11:44 am #953226Sam2ParticipantDY: It’s close enough, depending on your vowelization. The story I heard was that someone once brought it as a Limud Z’chus to R’ Shlomo Zalman for those who mispronounce the word “Elo-ah” in Hallel as “Eloha” that since “Aloha” has basically the same meaning as “Shalom” that it would be a legitimate translation for Shem Hashem. R’ Shlomo Zalman said that’s not right because “Aloha” doesn’t count as a Shem Hashem. Now, that means that it both doesn’t count as a translation and doesn’t count as the Shem being said directly.

this whole thread is a joke.
Some holy names depend on the context to be considered holy.
This is important to the sofer who must be aware of these distinctions when writing a sefer torah.
May 17, 2013 1:32 pm at 1:32 pm #953228ChortkovParticipantWhat is “pig latin”?
Have you never heard a Yeshiva bochur asking for a “R’ Chaim all-h Rambam?”
May 17, 2013 1:47 pm at 1:47 pm #953229☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSeems to me that his point was that since it’s pronounced differently, it’s not the same.
BTW, there are two differences; the initial vowel sound, and the placement of the “H” sound.
May 17, 2013 2:02 pm at 2:02 pm #953230tzaddiqMemberok….i’ll ask….
what in heaven’s name is pig latin??
May 17, 2013 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #953231nitpickerParticipantOK…. SO I’ll explain what pig-latin is.
pig latin is just one system of changing every word spoken so that only people in on the secret can understand what you are saying. to others it just gibberish.
In the case of pig-latin, you move the first consonant to the end of the word and add AY. examples: WORD becomes
ord-way,tzaddiq becomes addiq-tzay. After a few minutes practice it is easy to do and understand. If the word begins with a vowel, I think you just add ay to the end of the word.
etgay itay?
May 17, 2013 2:40 pm at 2:40 pm #953232Shopping613 🌠ParticipantPig Latin is a kid language where you take the first letter of every word put it at the end, and add “ay” like this:
ihay iay peaksay igpay atinlay.
Get it? Now think of the word hello, and in your mind do the same thing. Word sound familiar?
