People should be aware of the new and now pervasive phenominon of people in shidduchim giving photoshoped pictures making themselves look much better on their shidduch resume.
Another reason to get away from the terrible machla of shidduch pictures altogether.

Please explain how using Photoshop to enhance an image is any different than wearing makeup.

He’s not marrying the image.
February 7, 2016 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #1136672JosephParticipantDoes makeup also make her look 75 pounds less, a lighter shade hair color, a bit taller and no pimples or wrinkles?

As with anything, you can go too far with Photoshop (and with makeup as well).
As a non-professional but serious photographer, I don’t find a problem with moderate touching up of a photo to enhance the image of a person.
If you’re going to so radically alter the person (such as take off 75 pounds), then what’s the point? All that’s going to happen is that the date will feel betrayed upon actually seeing the person and realize that they can’t trust them at all and end the relationship right there. So what would be the point of it?

February 8, 2016 12:17 am at 12:17 am #1136676Abba_SParticipantI am not surprised, the photo is one of the first things you see so you need to impress. Otherwise it’s on to the next resume. I assume they are also getting the resume done professionally so why not the picture also.
February 8, 2016 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm #1136677JosephParticipantWolf: Do you think the bochor mesmerized the photo and will do a mental comparison between the resume photo and the girl when he’s dating her?
February 8, 2016 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #1136678old manParticipantWait, I like this one. How does one mesmerize a photo?
February 8, 2016 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #1136679👑RebYidd23ParticipantTake another photo, one of a mesmerizer, and show the girl picture the mesmerizer one.
February 8, 2016 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #1136680Avi KParticipantWhat about people using pictures taken when they were much younger?
February 8, 2016 5:41 pm at 5:41 pm #1136681akupermaParticipantActually the manipulation of pictures goes back a long time. It isn’t new or shocking. Before digital cameras, one could retouch photographys (e.g. the famous story of how the Communists would “delete” pictures of those who fell out of favor, and inset the new “fearless leader” into heroic events he never participated in). Before that, paintings and drawing (e.g. the famous story of King Henry VIII who was furious when an arranged marriage involved a foreign princess who didn’t look at all like her picture).
It may be an interesting subject, but it is hardly a “new and now pervasive phenominon” as the original posting suggested.
February 8, 2016 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #1136682MenoParticipantCan the picture of the mesmerizer be photoshopped?
February 8, 2016 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #1136683kollelmanParticipantI wonder what would happen if people actually responded to deceptive practices just like in the real world. What if everyone acted as a “customer” – let the Shadchan sell the product – instead of being sold to the Shadchan. If they trick or lie, why treat them differently than a store selling unkosher as kosher.
As an aside, I find it despicable that when it comes to exposing bad behavior – molesters and other serious offenses, people suddenly are concerned about the “lashon hara” aspect. When a store suddenly loses hechsher, which is sometimes only caused by non-payment or getting a different agency, there is no fear of taking out FULL PAGE ads in several newspapers to inform the public. WOW! Talk about mistaken priorities!
February 8, 2016 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm #1136684apushatayidParticipantI’m more concerned with “photoshopped” information.
February 8, 2016 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #1136685The QueenParticipantPeople don’t marry pictures. Eventually you meet the person, and can decide based on the person, as apposed to basing marriage on a picture. If the person and photo look completely different, you at least know you are dealing with a person who “doctors the truth” and proceed with caution.
February 8, 2016 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #1136686WolfishMusingsParticipantWolf: Do you think the bochor mesmerized the photo and will do a mental comparison between the resume photo and the girl when he’s dating her?
If she’s been Photoshopped to the extreme that you mention (75 pounds lighter), then yes, he’ll notice.
If it’s subtle and not very noticeable, then again, I ask… how it is any different than wearing makeup on a date?

Photoshopped information is a (forgive me Mr Trump) HUUUGE Problem in shidduchim.
People are aware of the need to avoid lashon hara.
They are not aware of the issurim involved in ‘lifnei ivver’.

Wolf, this is a family program, must keep it tznius. So no one is really going to be able to answer your question. And im pretty sure he meant when it is a significant difference in person.
February 9, 2016 4:05 am at 4:05 am #1136689apushatayidParticipantWhy would someone so drastically alter a photo when an in person meeting would reveal the photo manipulation.
February 9, 2016 4:56 am at 4:56 am #1136690👑RebYidd23ParticipantThe camera adds ten pounds. They remove those ten.

February 9, 2016 10:00 pm at 10:00 pm #1136692apushatayidParticipantOne of lifes big mysteries. How can eating a 1 pound box of cookies make you gain 15 pounds.
