“Bacteria are not feeling.”
from which exact scientific study did you pick this up?
are you certain?
if so, based on what?
they certainly react to their environment and flee chemicals which are noxious to them…
if youre not certain are you willing to risk the death and suffering of millions of innocent lives?!
check this out
“Controversially, bacteria could even have cognitive talents that rival our own. Predatory behaviour, cooperation, memory — Natasha Mitchell takes you on a strange adventure into the secret world of microbial mentality.”

how do you determine necessity, or inability to avoid?
according to whom?
what standards?
what criteria?
whose values?
getting a little bit closer.
October 30, 2008 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #624642JosephParticipantFeivel, why do you add t’s to your links?
October 30, 2008 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #624643Give Me a BreakMemberfeivel:
Cognitive is not literal. How can bacteria feel if they have no nerves?
P.S. I go to zoos, but only to those in which the animals have large spaces to roam.

Here’s probably the only time I agree with Joseph – why DO you add t’s to your link?
October 30, 2008 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #624645feivelParticipantjoseph
i thought you cant post links here, i figured if it was a broken link, it would get past the software that throws them out, people can then remove the t’s
that’s not necessary?
October 30, 2008 9:28 pm at 9:28 pm #624646feivelParticipant“How can bacteria feel if they have no nerves?”
i have no idea
is consciousness dependent on nerves?
no one (scientifically speaking) knows what consciousness is!
maybe a tree has consciousness, many people think they do.
i ask again is it worth the horrible death of millions?
can you prove they have no consciousness?
can you prove they have no feelings?
NO you cant!
October 30, 2008 10:08 pm at 10:08 pm #624647Give Me a BreakMemberfeivel:
Consciousness needs a brain, which is essentially a cluster of nerves. If there are no nerves, what convey messages of feeling?
October 30, 2008 11:15 pm at 11:15 pm #624648feivelParticipantokay, i give up.
how about ants?
October 30, 2008 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #624649Give Me a BreakMemberfeivel:
Yes, ants suffer, but you can’t be expected to watch every step.
October 31, 2008 10:22 am at 10:22 am #624650jewishfeminist02MemberYes, I do agree that animals should be treated ethically, but as stated before, I do not believe that PETA fulfills this purpose.
Re ants, it is very difficult to accidentally kill an ant by stepping on it. Ants are so tiny that generally, people can step on the sidewalk and the minuscule space between the soles of our shoes and the surface of the ground is enough to shield ants from injury or death. When I was much younger, I used to keep my eyes trained on the ground as I walked to ensure that I didn’t step on ants or other insects; however, now I know that there’s no need to do that.
October 31, 2008 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #624651feivelParticipant“now i know there’s no need to do that”
no need to do that!!
are you crazy?
killing innocent living feeling creatures?!
are you a mass murderer?
what if you carried a disease that was usually fatal and extremely contagious?
would you say, well it’s very difficult for me to avoid coming into contact with people, if they die, they die, i cant just stay home.
if you arent willing to take the trouble to walk outside very slowly, with your eyes paying very close attention to the ground, you should stay home!
ants have rights too.
who are you to decide that random innocent lives shall be shed, because you are too preoccupied to avoid killing them?
“Ants are so tiny that generally, people can step on the sidewalk and the minuscule space between the soles of our shoes and the surface of the ground is enough to shield ants from injury or death”
i guess a serial killer can find any excuse.
what you said is not true.
there is no space between the midsole and central heel of your shoe and the ground.
otherwise you would be literally walking on air.

November 2, 2008 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #624655jewishfeminist02MemberFirstly, it wouldn’t be murder, it would be manslaughter- or, I suppose, antslaughter.
Second, ants aren’t stupid; they stay away from feet. I have noticed that it is difficult to accidentally kill an ant because they can see the shadow of one’s feet and anticipate where and when they will descend. Granted, if one is trying to kill an ant it is possible, but my point is that accidentally killing ants doesn’t happen very often, in my experience. Anyway, as you pointed out, it is only two small areas of the foot that are in danger of killing ants, not the entire area of the foot.
B’chol zot, nobody is pretending that ants have the same rights as people, but they are still God’s creatures and deserve our consideration. When I find an ant in my house, I let it crawl onto a piece of paper and take the paper outside, rather than simply killing it. (Ditto for spiders/beetles/etc.)

November 3, 2008 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm #624661squeakParticipantGMAB is obviously QUITE a talmid chochom. Ants are QUITE hard to see, and you are walking anyway. On Shabbos, this would incur the ptur of Psik Raisha Dlo Nicha Leh, or Misasek. After all, no one here said that it’s OK to walk as you wish during the week, but that you need to be extra careful on Shabbos. Apparently, it is only killing if it is a “Harigas Machsheves”.
Too bad only one person can be the kohen godol and wear bells on his hem…..
November 4, 2008 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #624662yoshiMemberGive Me a Break – Don’t worry, the closest I came with any glass object to an ant, was when I took an empty fish tank and tried to make an ant farm. Long story short, I got grounded for digging up a huge hole in the front yard 😉

You have a very valid point, but it depends who you ask – many HAVE been influenced well by PETA. Nevertheless, I agree that much of their propagandizing is wrong and extremist, and, as you say, turns people off.

November 7, 2008 1:22 pm at 1:22 pm #624674Pashuteh YidMemberJfem, it roughly translates to, “Now that feminists have invaded YW, the world is coming to an end.” (It loses something in the translation.)

November 7, 2008 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm #624680ZalmanParticipantgmab, I mean that sincerely. I would like to take an interest in you and your mishpacha.
November 9, 2008 12:43 am at 12:43 am #624681Give Me a BreakMemberANYWAYS, where was I? Oh yes. Animals deserve our respect, and yet we fail to give it to them. They should not be slaughtered and tortured as they are now.
Zalman:
You want to know about about my mishpacha? I’ll tell you about my siblings. I have four sisters and one brother.
Sister #1 is two years younger than I am.
Sister #2 is four years younger than am.
Sister #3 is six years younger than I am.
Sister #4 is eight years younger than I am.
Brother is ten years younger than I am.
That’s all you need to know.
November 9, 2008 1:31 am at 1:31 am #624682BogenParticipantI get the strong sense that gmab is at home with his parents, behind their YeshivaNet controlled access, who have no idea what kind of mischief he is up to here. They feel safe with YeshivaNet, but gmab being the klieger kinnd he is, wants to show he can be up to no good even WITH that service.

Oh? And I get the feeling that you’re at home alone in your apartment, having nothing better to do than make up stories about me.
If you drew that “conclusion” from the fact that I wrote only about my siblings, it’s because my age, marital status, and parental status is of no business of “Zalman”‘s. But he so much wants to know about “the mishpacha” that I don’t want to leave him empty-handed.

But, I’m definitely a pro meat eater 🙂 mmm…

All we have is conjecture with your secretive posture. But STILL, no need to get all bent out of shape and repeat yourself twice and respond 3 times to a simple thought.
November 9, 2008 7:32 am at 7:32 am #624689jewishfeminist02MemberEven supposing GMAB is “at home with his parents”, what difference does that make? He’s not doing anything wrong. If you knew that he were, say, forty-five years old, would you still say that he’s “up to no good”? Or are children and teenagers just not allowed to have independent thoughts and opinions?

I repeated twice because I edited my post, and responded again because it wasn’t getting posted.

I CERTAINLY don’t support killing babies – I support the right of a woman to abort an unborn fetus.

If you’re pro-life, shouldn’t you be pro- the life of innocent animals?
