My brother must live on the “other side of the tracks”. I didn’t meet a lot of yeshivish people, but I did meet yeshivish-ish people. It’s a nice community, reminds me of home (except the hills).

There’s a large Latino population in Passaic and in neighborhing Paterson you have Palestinians that hate Jews.

    coffeeaddict: Mordechai Schmutter liver there…

along with the rest of his body 🙂

It’s close enough to NYC community, by car or mass transit.

You cannot get there by car.

yes you can. Lincoln, Holland, GWB. Goethals and varrezano to brkln/farrack. you MAY not want to drive there but you CAN drive there.

mass transit is also a pain and can be expensive but less of a headache than driving to the city everyday. plenty of men and woman from passaic/clifton take the train to work

and the spanish are in downtown, not passiac proper, also known as passaic park

For more info on Passaic/Clifton, there was a nice article in Hamodia’s magazine section about 4 months ago. From what I hear, it is a warm and vibrant community.

I live there, too. When I moved in like 15 years ago, there was a very mixed crowd. Today it is definitely more yeshivish. There are many BTs and singles but there are plenty of professionals and working people. The location is pretty convenient – we’re not far from NYC, Monsey, Teaneck and only about an hour + 10 minutes to Lakewood.

The more yeshivish/kollel types are more in the northern part of Passaic Park (Passaic’s 3rd ward). In general the baalebatish are south of the park and in Clifton. Hispanics in PP seem to be mostly east of Main. P/C is very convenient for those working in Manhattan. The ‘brkln crowd’ is a mixed blessing, IMO.

Other than geography, what amenities and considerations does Passaic / Clifton offer a frum family, that might entice them to consider moving there?

And how do housing prices (buying or renting) compare to other Jewish towns?

Health, and do pray tell why I can’t drink the tap water. obviously, my family did not get the memo that we had water imported from brklyn

Iced, cuz we have trees, grass, backyards and we actually know our neighbors. I think prices of houses range from 400-500K upwards. also depends where you look. by the park its more expensive; Clifton/other side of main I believe is cheaper.

Passaic has a mix of types here and its a slower pace. I grew up here so for me its where I live; I don’t know the reason ppl move here specifically over other places

I moved here because the housing prices were much cheaper than Brooklyn; and in Brooklyn you don’t get all that much. Brooklyn was totally out of the question because of its inaffordability. BH I bought my house before the prices skyrocketed. Today it’s worth double what I paid. Unfortunately, our property taxes keep rising and so does our yeshiva tuition. Hey, but at least gas is cheaper here than in NY!

Install a faucet filter and then tell me P/C’s water isn’t gross…

Large shuls, storefront shuls, basement shuls; choice of elementary schools, kollels, Beis Yaakov, Yeshiva Gedolah; businesses that take chesed dollars and/or are run by frum Jews such as grocery, dry cleaners, movers, plumbers, electricians, handymen, caterers, jewelry makers/sellers, sheitel machers, doctors, dentists, appliance sellers, CPAs, lawyers, musicians, artists, sofrim, Z Berman, realtors; slurpees, Carvel (non-CY), 2 pizza stores, Chinese, sit down/take out fleishigs, Bagel store, bakeries, sushi. Costco, all the chain stores. Amazing Savings. Trader Joe’s coming in November.

Even longer list of gemachim… Hatzolah, on again/off again Chaverim. Community biur chometz. Nice park in the middle of the eruv for tashlich (duck pond and brook). NJ Transit train station and buses that go to Port Authority. Spanish buses/jitneys if that’s your thing.

Nowhere near the gashmiyus of other places.

The Man With The Truck, Basic Colors, Elzees come occasionally. Have I forgotten anything?

Aside from gaslight’s exaggerated descriptions (how much choice in schooling do you really have locally?), there is nothing on either gaslight or yentingyenta’s list that Brooklyn lacks. And there is so much more in town.

there is the yeshiva K’tana system-Preschool, girls elementary, boys elementary and girls HS. Mesivta of passiac (i think thats the name), a yeshiva g’dola. mesivta of clifton. Yeshivat Bait Hillel. Cheder (Montessori type school; boys and girls classes)

and Brooklyn lacks SPACE. in Passaic we are not shoved on top of each other. we don’t have to fight for parking spaces except Thurs night and Friday.

the best part is that we are not Brooklyn but if we need to get there, we can get there. its the best of both worlds

Vochindik, what about more affordable housing? Not that 400-500K is affordable, of course.

I don’t think I exaggerated. P/C, does, however, lack the Brooklyn ‘tude, except from those who arrive with it.

3br houses can be found for under $400 but might need work. Housing might be cheaper than Brooklyn, but is insanely expensive compared to the non-tri-state-area (why live among millions of yidden when you only need ten anyhow?).

And voch, I trying to answer the OPs question, not compare P/C and Brooklyn.

I just had a gut feeling that you would question me on this -I don’t know why.

First of all, what does Brooklyn have to do with this?

Second of all, I know s/o who died from CA there at a young age – <40 and it could have been from the drinking water.

When I was a Bochur there – they said – Not to drink the water.

brooklyn because you can’t drink the water from brooklyn secondary to the bugs you can’t see

and second of all, if thats the reasoning, don’t drink the water in any part of the world because unfortunately young people get CA too.

and when you were a bachur here i’m sure is a long time ago. things DO change over time. my family drinks the water, my neighbors drink the water. my friend who lives across town drinks the water. if the water is running brown b/c of water main work, then we don’t drink the water but on a normal day we drink the water (after running it for 30 seconds to clear the line)

According to the CDC, NYC has the cleanest tap water is the country, and is one of only three places in the U.S. that is exempt from filtering its water, since it is so pure.

yentingyenta—-you way, way off. I live in Passiac…There are MANY houses available for between $200k-$350k, 400-500 are around too but that was the bottom price 5-7 years ago. The property taxes one issue though, they are avg bet $6k-$11K/yr.

vochindik–I live “in town”=passaic:)…..btw, just for the privilege of being able to make a right turn on red in NJ is worth living out of NYC. period. Whenever I am driving in nyc, my nerves get frayed from waiting for all those lights, it is really less stressful living out-of-town because of that in general (i lived in brooklyn for many years also)

Unfortunately, their standards aren’t Halacha standards. It might be safe to eat crustaceans, but you’re Oiver a Lav -because it’s a whole living creature. So you’re not allowed to drink NY tap water.

Yenta -“brooklyn because you can’t drink the water from brooklyn secondary to the bugs you can’t see”

You can definitely see the bugs -if they were microscopic -it wouldn’t be Ossur to drink/eat.

“and second of all, if thats the reasoning, don’t drink the water in any part of the world because unfortunately young people get CA too.”

If the water quality is one of the suspected reasons, then you’re right. This happenned in Toms River, NJ. They think a CA cluster was due to the chemical plant contaminating local ground water.

“and when you were a bachur here i’m sure is a long time ago. things DO change over time. my family drinks the water, my neighbors drink the water. my friend who lives across town drinks the water. if the water is running brown b/c of water main work, then we don’t drink the water but on a normal day we drink the water (after running it for 30 seconds to clear the line)”

Wow -that’s such a scientific argument. My Mom does it, my Pop does it and my dog does it!

Get a water analysis from the water company and see what contaminants are close to or above the safe level. It’s probably one of the worst in Jersey. Lakewood actually has a good report.

You can’t make a right on red in NYC?? IS that all NY or just NYC? (oops)

Another great thing about NJ is that it’s against the law to pump your own gas. Oregon is the only other state where you can’t.

justsmile613, nope. I’ve heard a few houses going/on sale and those are the numbers i heard. the 200-350K houses are in passaic or in clifton near the cemetery or the other side of main near 21? I doubt those are the houses by The Circle/park area

Health, Thats Toms River, not Passaic. If you have a problem with the P/C water, don’t drink it.

I posted it was TR, not Passaic, but it could be true in Passaic too. And my OP was – not to drink the water there -so why wouldn’t I practice what I preach?
