I just read an excellent book by David Mandel and David Pelcovitz, titled Breaking The Silence, a comprehensive book on sexual abuse. As a parent, I found the book to be very informative on how to speak to my children about sexual abuse, a critical component to prevention. The book also covers the halachic and legal aspects of abuse, as well as how to respond effectively if your child was abused, chas vasholom.
The book is an imperative guide for parents, school administration and the community at large, on how to protect and respond effectivly to our children.
It is everyones responsibility to read this book and gain an understanding of sexual abuse, enabling us as parents, school administration and the community to begin to turn the tide on sexual abuse in our community. It is our responsibility to protect our most precious asset, our children.
