I have put on 65 pounds over the last 7 years and can’t seem to get the weight off. Would like to take off 20 pounds by pesach any suggestions????. I have always battled weight my entire life,I sit most of the day and go to the gym HELP

March 7, 2011 10:05 am at 10:05 am #748511guy-ochoMemberThe only realistic way I see to get rid of 20 lbs. before Pesach, would be with a chainsaw. Wish you luck.
March 7, 2011 1:23 pm at 1:23 pm #748512OfcourseMemberBe your own detective. Do a Cheshbon HaDiet and figure out your Worst Noshing Times ( most often couch potato times or stressful times) and Worst Noshes (calorie laden). Try substituting healthy foods for the unhealthy and offer yourself “fun” rewards, other than eating, for a week of “being good”.
Also, get a quality juicer and drink home made vegetable and fruit juices, and try to make them and drink them on a schedule. You’ll want less nosh. Eat high fiber foods. Eat less starches, especially white flour and sugar. Try dieting with a friend and compare notes about what helps.
Be confident and think of the prize.
Hatzlacha.
March 7, 2011 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #748513aries2756ParticipantYou need to eat protein for breakfast within an hour of waking up in the morning to fuel and kick off your metabolism. If you are not eating a healthy low calorie breakfast that includes protein within the hour, you are starting off the day working against yourself.
March 7, 2011 2:20 pm at 2:20 pm #748514ramateshkolianMembereat at MOST 1200 calories a day (shabbos included) and high cardio excersize AT LEAST half an hour EVERY DAY!!! Friday and motzei shabbos included. If you really stick to that you’ll lose about 2 lb. a week….good luck! 20 lb is crazy-i like the chainsaw idea…
March 7, 2011 2:20 pm at 2:20 pm #748515mybatMemberJoin weight watchers with a friend and keep thinking that you CAN do it.
March 7, 2011 2:51 pm at 2:51 pm #748516ChicagoBubbyParticipantTake a look at the homeopathic HCG diet. Men lose an average of a lb. daily and women an average of half a lb. daily.
Go to this link: http://ketomist.com/cmd.php?af=1205831
Read everything there and watch the video. Get the eBook written by Dr. Simeons and read that. Note that it is written for a different (injectable rather than oral spray) version of this diet so there are some small differences in the food plan (notably that you cannot have coffee with the spray, that you can have unlimited amounts of the allowed vegetables at each meal as long as you don’t mix different kinds of vegetables and there is some differences in the choices of fruits & vegetables).
Please note that to do a full round of this diet you need 6-7 weeks of the diet phase followed by 6 weeks maintenance. There is not presently enough time before Pesach to do it properly (the homeopathic spray itself is chometz and the first 3 weeks of maintenance do not allow any starches or sugars).
March 7, 2011 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #748517bptParticipantI’m still a big believer in the following plan (and I really doubt any adult can function on 1200 calories)
1) try to only eat food you make at home. And never skip breakfast!
2) if you must eat store bought food, try to avoid things with more than 5 ingredients
3) avoid hydrogenated anything!
4) portion size: divide your plate as follows: 50% salad, 25% main course, 25% side dish. desert should be the same size as your main course
5) Excercise. No, not the NYC marathon, and not the Ironman triathalon. Walking 2-3 miles (within 30-45 minutes)a day should do the trick for 90% of us
There is really no reason you cannot knock off 20 lbs (or more) in 6 weeks. And don’t let Pesach scare you; matzoh, fish, fruits / vegtables and chicken are not fattenting.. (but butter, mayo, chocolate and deep frying is)
Put your mind to this and you can do it!
March 7, 2011 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm #748518mewhoParticipanttry ”weight no more diet center” they have multiple locations and are on the web.
March 7, 2011 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #748519aries2756ParticipantIf you are always thinking “I am on a diet” you will sabotage yourself. If you think I need to eat healthy or “I don’t need that” instead of “I shouldn’t eat that” you will psych yourself up to do better. Each time you think “I shouldn’t” your yetzer hara tells you “yeah I know, but one small bite won’t kill you” and then one bite turns into the whole portion. So when you tell yourself “I don’t need that” you are making a positive confirmation.
March 7, 2011 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #748520rebdonielMemberbpt,
A great walk that I try to do 3 times a week is from 18th Avenue and Ocean Parkway down to Kings Highway, and then back up Coney Island Avanue to 18th, and down 18th to Boro Park.
March 7, 2011 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #748521catchyloginMemberDo yourself a favor and stop dieting and listening to these plans. Aries2476 just gave you some great advise. Just eat healthy meals, and add some extra healthy snacks like apples, grapes, cucumbers, carrots, etc. No one has to tell you what’s healthy, I’m sure if you thought about it, you know exactly what not to eat and what you should eat.
I’ll just add one more angle, get yourself a yoga teacher. Not a yoga demonstrator. You might need some changes in the way you spend your days. Someone who can teach you how to really incorporate a healthy lifestyle into your life, preferably a Jewish person who understands where you’re coming from. (Also buy a few new items of clothing that make you feel good.) Good luck.

March 7, 2011 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #748523popa_bar_abbaParticipantGo to a nutritionist. Find out how many calories you need to eat to lose how much weight per week.
Allot yourself a certain number of calories per day, taking into account that you will want to allot more for ???.
Lose as much as you want.
March 7, 2011 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #748524apushatayidParticipantYour doctor, a good nutritionist or dietician will work up a meal plan suitable for you and your lifestyle. Eating right along with excercise is the only healthy way to lose weight. I’ve tried to lose 25 pounds for almost 3 years. Never got down more than 5 pounds, before putting it right back on. About 7 weeks ago I started with a nutritionist and follow a meal plan and excercise regimen and am losing on avg 1.3 pounds per week every week. Admittedly, it is very hard to stick to a plan, especially when there is a bar mitzvah in shul and 4 types of kugels, all the herring you could want, cake and chulent staring you in the face. I have not mastered self control when it comes to food, so I say mazel tov and go home. Hopefully in 6 months time, self control will be real easy.
March 7, 2011 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #748525bptParticipantrebdoniel
That’s almost 4.5 miles.
How fast can you do that?

March 8, 2011 12:42 am at 12:42 am #748527candy613Memberi second weight watchers!!!! i went on it, and lost 19 pounds in less then 2 months!!!!! It’s kinda hard, but in a way easier then others cuz you can eat whatever you want, just not that much of it. If strongly focuses on portion control (my biggest problem!) i actually know a very heavy women who lost 110 pounds on weight watchers in a year and she has kept it off and looks amazing! I just wasn’t able to keep it off like she was 🙁

March 8, 2011 2:29 am at 2:29 am #748528shev143MemberDoes anyone know what are the new changes to weight watchers?
I went on them 6 years ago lost 20 pounds and have kept it off but, am curious I heard they re-vamped their whole program?
March 8, 2011 3:15 am at 3:15 am #748529mischiefmakerMember“The Rambabs diet.”
you mean the Rambans diet? If so can you say what it is cuz i heard it a few times but never got it.
March 8, 2011 3:23 am at 3:23 am #748530farrockgrandmaParticipantTry eating your meals on a smaller plate. Makes less seem like more.
20 pounds by Pesach is very ambitious, and maybe just a little unhealthy. Be happy with whatever progress you make in the right direction.
March 8, 2011 4:32 am at 4:32 am #748531pet peeveMembermischief: there is a book called something like “the life transforming diet” based on the teachings of Rambam’s health principles. it is an excellent read, and also a practical weight loss program. i also recommend trying Soveya’s program–you can find information about them on their website.
the bottom line is: to lose a lot of weight quickly is going to involve work, and a structured, careful system. if you are serious about it, get onto a program as fast as possible…….and then comes the hard part….sticking to it!!! lots of programs “work”, its just a matter of finding what works for you, but your own self control and motivation is the biggest determining factor.

March 8, 2011 11:11 am at 11:11 am #748534ImaofthreeParticipantShev143, the new Weight Watchers diet came out in November. You still count points, but you are allowed more points, at least twenty nine points. But now carbs are more points and fruit is zero points, just not dried fruit, only fresh fruit.

And in order to do that, it won’t hurt to lose a few pounds.

That is so true! I lose tons of weight when I’m dating someone.
March 8, 2011 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #748537shev143MemberThanks Ima, do you like this new one better? Do they still have the core diet – where you are allowed to eat an unlimited amount of certain foods and only your 35 flex for the week.
March 8, 2011 9:34 pm at 9:34 pm #748538rebdonielMemberbpt,
It takes me about 2 hours. I walk at a pace of 2-2.5 miles per hour, depending on a variety of factors. I usually take a rest on Ocean Parkway and eat my dessert- a container of pineapple or honeydew and a bottle of water- and then continue walking.
I once walked from Caesar’s Bay to 18th and Ocean Parkway and back, and it took a little more than 3 hours.
I like this better than the gym, and best of all, it’s free, and I get to do my best thinking while walking.
March 8, 2011 9:36 pm at 9:36 pm #748539rebdonielMemberI’m still overweight, because I like to fress, but at least I am in good health this way. I get plenty of vitamins, minerals, and my cholesterol, lipids, liver enzymes, etc. are usually at good levels.
March 8, 2011 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #748540bptParticipant“I walk at a pace of 2-2.5 miles per hour”
That’s a good pace, especially when you’re doing 4+ miles. Even better, considering you take a break in between.
What’s your age bracket? (25-35…36-45…46-55..56-65)
March 8, 2011 11:09 pm at 11:09 pm #748541rebdonielMember20-30 age bracket.
March 9, 2011 6:02 pm at 6:02 pm #748542bptParticipantStill, 2.5 mph is a very good pace, regardless of your age. Keep at it, and you’ll be able to continue the pace at my age! (40+)

Meh. That only worked for me when I was adorable and innocent.
March 9, 2011 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #748544gettothepointMemberThere is something called bioslim. it’s a powder that you mix into water and you drink it 2 or three times a day. there are two points to this drink. first of all, it makes you not crave sweets. second of all, you’ll notice that you have to drink it right away otherwise, it becomes really thick and hard to drink. i think that that’s what it does once it enters your system, it fills you up so that you don’t feel you need to eat that much. i know someone who tried it and shed more than 40 pounds in 3.5 months.
