It’s just simply too hard if not impossible to “unaddict” kids from the slippery slope of more advanced (& less kosher) games as they get older to be worth it.
January 13, 2015 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #1051904PosterMemberI downloaded an adorable educational computer game for my son. He loved it. I sat watching my 5 year old maneuvering the mouse, it just didnt seem right.
I understand we are living in the year 2015 but I just want to shelter the kids as long as I can.
WOndering if a/o understands this.
January 13, 2015 4:39 pm at 4:39 pm #1051905👑RebYidd23ParticipantNo, I don’t. Computer games are not a new technology anymore.
January 13, 2015 6:19 pm at 6:19 pm #1051907NeutiquamErroParticipantI handed a young child my simple, buttons only, small screen, call and text only phone. The kid, about 1 and a half years old, picked it up, stared at it for a few seconds, and then swiped at the screen got confused and stared at me. So, Poster, agreed. It’s just weird.

So let’s take an account of games my five and under kids like to play. We have a tablet with Android at home with a few and they like (in no particular order)
- Ticket to Ride
- Jetpack Joyride
- Super Hexagon
- World of Goo
- Plants vs. Zombies
Of course we also have a computer which they play
- Peggle
- FTL (with some help from me)
- A few others to varying degrees of interest
Soon I’ll probably introduce them to Super Mario and Tetris. In my personal opinion, as long as there’s known a limit to how much time they could spend playing, there’s nothing wrong with giving them a computer/phone/tablet and letting them let out a bit of steam. It’s even better when said device has a strong password for any and all Internet uses (dedicated Linux laptop
sudo iptables -A INPUT -m owner --uid-owner TheKids -j DROP
) and a handful of pre-approved non-violent games on it.January 14, 2015 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm #1051909oomisParticipantPersonally, I think they spend way too much time with this. I have no issue with educational games, but I am opposed to violent ones.
January 14, 2015 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #1051910👑RebYidd23ParticipantComputer games are different from smartphone games.

understand the desire not to have video games in one’s home…
January 15, 2015 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #1051912PosterMemberComlink-X, funny you say that, I feel that way about videos.
I really enjoy videos and can watch good ones for hours.
Seeing how addictive it was with me. I keep away from it completely and I dont want to get my kids started.
