could anyone who is experienced with both verizon DSL and optimum tell me some of the pros and cons and which one you prefer. verizon used to freeze very often and it got much better any comments/info?
December 18, 2008 12:13 am at 12:13 am #1030658asdfghjklParticipanti have optimum & love the fast service-it works wonders with mozilla firefox!!! optimum is way faster then dsl!!!!
December 18, 2008 12:17 am at 12:17 am #1030659noitallmrParticipantCome on Mariner…haven’t heard from you for ages. This is your expertise!
December 18, 2008 12:31 am at 12:31 am #1030660Chuck SchwabParticipantasdfghjkl, WOW, and we all believed you were in Ireland postin’ at 3 in the mornin’!!!
Optimum is only available in the Northeastern USA!!!
December 18, 2008 1:27 am at 1:27 am #1030661I can only tryMemberVerizon’s cheapest DSL service is about $20 a month and is fast enough for the average person’s web and email use.
Cable service such as Optimum’s is much faster, but also much more expensive – last time I priced it $40 per month with cable TV, $50 a month with internet only.
For most people I recommend DSL, because you will save $200+ per year, and you don’t really need the extra speed.
If you are getting phone service from Optimum as well, it may be a different story – I never priced their combo service package.
December 18, 2008 2:43 am at 2:43 am #1030662asdfghjklParticipantChuck Schwab: in my town we do get optimum!!! nice one though!!!!!!
December 19, 2008 1:14 am at 1:14 am #1030663Chuck SchwabParticipantasdfghjkl, you said you got your current sneakers at Modell’s, you miss that bakery that closed on Coney Island Ave., and now you say you use Optimum (and not Verizon, which the original poster compared it to) but you want everyone to think you are in Ireland????
Optimum is only in NY (and surrounding areas.) Its a trademark online service of cablevision, and no other internet company can use it. Unless you hired them to rum a transatlantic cable from America to Ireland…
December 19, 2008 1:25 am at 1:25 am #1030664asdfghjklParticipantChuck Schwab: lol your keeping a close eye on me!!! but you missed my earlier posts posts that i’m originally from ny & work took me to ireland!!! as for the optimum thing i get it through my work….if i say anymore the mods would edit it so… nice chatting with you though!!!
December 19, 2008 1:32 am at 1:32 am #1030665squeakParticipantIf you live in a FiOS area, you can’t get DSL and the cost is about the same.
December 19, 2008 1:59 am at 1:59 am #1030666asdfghjklParticipantsqueak: what’s a FiOS area????
December 19, 2008 2:30 am at 2:30 am #1030667squeakParticipantWhere Verizon has invested in a Fiber Optic System (FiOS).

December 19, 2008 6:53 am at 6:53 am #1030673Chuck SchwabParticipantwhats the web address of this so-called optimum in ireland, of yours? cause theres the only optimum is in the good ‘ole usa.
December 19, 2008 1:57 pm at 1:57 pm #1030674noitallmrParticipantChuck Schwab- On Thursday’s i tend to be a night- owl…
Is that OK by you?
December 19, 2008 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #1030675SJSinNYCMemberI have used both. Service wise, both were fine (we had FIOS) and equal for the general population.
The problem we had with verizon was the billing system!!! the bills were crazy and EVERY month they were wrong. It took forever each month to correct and each month they said it wouldnt happen the next on. Their computer system for the customer service reps were terrible and they had so much trouble trying to help us. Also, their line items on the bill make absolutely no sense so deciphering where they over charged you is a nightmare.
Finally, my husband got fed up and switched us to Cablevision. We got a similiar deal price wise, plus a $300 gift card to PC richards. We havent had any billing issues.
I also used Cablevision when we were in Brooklyn and had no trouble there either.
December 19, 2008 5:41 pm at 5:41 pm #1030676kapustaParticipantwhats the difference between FiOS and DSL. Havent had any billing issus with verizon B”H is optimum cable as in they’ll have to come down to install?
December 21, 2008 12:48 am at 12:48 am #1030677asdfghjklParticipantChuck Schwab: this inturigation stuff of your is really getting old!!!!!
December 21, 2008 2:02 am at 2:02 am #1030678Chuck SchwabParticipantasdfghjkl, lol. c’mon admit it! your pulling all our legs; I’ll bet your around the corner from me in flatbush laughing away at your keyboard that you fooled most of us to think your in Ireland!!
December 21, 2008 2:08 am at 2:08 am #1030679I can only tryMemberkapusta-
Fios will require a Verizon technician to come down to your house and install equipment outside (so I read).
Cable also requires installation, including drilling thru an outside wall or windowframe, then running an exposed ugly cable thru your house, including thru walls.
DSL uses existing interior and exterior wiring, but requires filters between ann non-DSL appliances (phone, fax, alarm) and the phone line.
December 21, 2008 2:17 am at 2:17 am #1030680Chuck SchwabParticipantasdfghjkl, you still didn’t give us the web address of your so-called optimum provider in Ireland. oops, you slipped up… Optimum is in the USA!! time to be a nice boy and admit it, lol.
December 21, 2008 2:23 am at 2:23 am #1030681modernduckMemberverizon dsl is the best by far together with antivirus, it works speeding.

September 3, 2014 4:58 am at 4:58 am #1030703JosephParticipantIs anyone familiar with the comparative performance between FiOS and cable internet and whether it’s worth the price differential?
September 3, 2014 12:26 pm at 12:26 pm #1030704☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhat are the prices of each?
September 4, 2014 2:31 am at 2:31 am #1030705JosephParticipantAbout $50 for FiOS and $40 for cable with a comparably claimed entry-level downstream speed.
September 4, 2014 3:46 am at 3:46 am #1030706☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSounds like cable offers more value.
September 4, 2014 4:16 am at 4:16 am #1030707JosephParticipantI’m wondering if cable and FiOS both actually provide their advertised speed.
September 4, 2014 4:25 am at 4:25 am #1030708☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSupposedly, you are sharing bandwidth with your neighbors when using cable, so FiOS speeds might be more reliable. Whether that makes enough of a difference to you depends on how you use it.
