If one comes across “new” information concerning the name if a deceased relative, is there a requirement to have the inscription on the tombstone updated (note that there’s a cost incurred in so doing)?
I have read of people using tombstone information to trace their lineage, so I can appreciate the benefit of having accurate inscriptions. But, I also learned that the origin of tombstones in Jewish circles was to warn Cohanim away from a grave in a field.
So, it would seem that the inscription itself is of little halachic value.
