    Hi,

What are some recommendations for someone in their 20s who wants to embark upon learning for the first time in a serious way? This person is a convert, they learned a lot in English, but is looking to gain yesodos/skills in Lashon haKodesh, to be able to learn for real. They’d like to be able to translate Chumash and Mishnayos within a year. The institution should be in the NYC area, and the individual is financially impoverished.

Hadar HaTorah in Crown Heights will be your best bet. It is specifically designed for Ba’al Teshuvas of all levels. In all the levels of shiurim, the focus is translating and learning, and the rabbi’s do not rely on English translations. In fact, it is discouraged to use English translations because they want you learn the Lashon HaKodesh. Also, the rabbi’s provide amazing attention and support to ensure that you are grasping the material and correctly translating and understanding. And, money is never an issue. Many bochurim, myself included when I was there, were able to learn and live there without paying a dime. I hope this helps.

    Hatzlacha!

Yeshiva University accepts students with no Jewish background at all. But it is not inexpensive.

    Good luck!

Ohr Somayach in Monsey is great, and I believe the money issue is flexible. Its not in NYC, but its close
