you have not been out of town. go for a shabbos and come back to NY you will see what they mean. not nec are they mean people but there is more going on and they are just making sure they have a parking spot and putting money in the meter they have no time for you.

just ask coffee addict about NY!

adorable, i couldnt have said it better myself. when you go out of town people actulually say hello in the elevator, in ny everyone is conveniently looking at a different corner deliberatly not making eyecontact so as not to need to say hi. its kinda funny really.

I totally agree! I’m a New Yorker, and i’m one of the nicest people i know! Even my alter ego is pretty nice as well.

(but i’m not sure it’s a New Yorker) maybe Hawaiian.

At the time of the 2000 census, Manhattan had a population density of more than 66,000 people per square mile. Brooklyn just under 35,000. They ranked number 1 and 5 respectively as the most densely populated counties in the country. Add in the number of daily visitors who come to work or as tourists. That is a lot of people trying to share not a lot of space. (The Bronx and Queens were also in the top 8 spots). Despite that, NYC and its surroundings are home to some of the largest and greatest chessed organizations around. I think those who malign NYers are just jealous that they are not NYers.

Of course people from out of town do tend to be polite the world over when compared to city dwellers, very true. But for me, a timid reserved Londoner, I find New Yorkers just delighful. In fact I find most Americans polite, friendly and smiling. In a busy city it is hard to find time for others, but the New York chein I have come across is intoxicating. I love it when New Yorkers banter and exchange one liners with each other, there is a quick witted humour unique to NY.

Hey!!! I’m a new yorker through and through and I think i’m nice. 🙂

I just meet so many more people on one trip to the grocery than most ppl. from OOT meet in a day! So it’s much more practical to just go about your own business and not try to be friendly to everyone you pass. 1/2 the people you pass you say hello to anyway cuz theyre from your shul, block, koillel, shiur…

I don’t think that New Yorkers are mean people, they are just “faryoogt un farploogt”. I mean how nice can one be after spending 45 minutes looking for a parking space?

Out of town, especially the midwest, you get the feeling that people are actually genuinely interested in helping you. In NY many times you get the feeling that even though he’s helping you, you’re really taking him away from doing something else.

So every single NYer (including the Rabbonim) is mean and evil, and every single OOTer is nice and perfect?

Every single NYer has an attitude, double-parks his car, and blocks you in? Every single one?

We don’t have Chesed organizations here in NY? I hope that an OOTer never needs anything from such a organization, because it’ll probably make that person ill to receive anything from such evil people.

If you have an issue with someone, why don’t you deal with the issue and the person, instead of bashing an entire community, which is, by the way, Loshon Hora.

If every OOTer is nice, why do so many OOTers come to NY to look for a Shidduch? Aren’t the OOTers in their own community good enough for them?

Is the OOTer actually considering marrying an evil NYer & contaminating the family line by bringing such a person into the family? My goodness, what’s the world coming to?

Why do many OOTers come to NY to learn in Yeshiva here? Aren’t their own Yeshivas good enough for them?

It is now that New Yorkers should begin considering other people! Where in the world do you hear the honking of the horn all our hours of the day? Where do people not consider other shoppers who are waiting for help or to pay. Where is respect? I could go on…. New York has so much good, so many helpful charities but it would be even better if People would start being more considerate.

If you don’t like New York, don’t come here. No one’s forcing you.

Stay in your nice, perfect OOT, with your nice, perfect OOTers.

We encourage our kids to say Good Shabbos to other frum yidden on the streets on shabbos. Sometimes we get a response, and often not. It does seem rude and we have to convince ourselves their lack of response is not out of maliciousness. I suspect that out of town this differs. I think it’s probably because frum people out of town have learned to appreciate the presence of other Jews, whereas, in NY, B’H, we’re a dime a dozen.

I traveled to NYC last week from Rockland. The way took me less time then it took me to get to the appropriate street, relize there is no parking, circled the block three times, all the while with people hunking and blocking the street while double parking, finaly I found a space a few blocks away but only for 20 minutes before I had to move the car due to alternet side parking.

When it was time to go back home oh was I happy to get the hell out of the city.

Then people wonder why NY’ers are rude? they are living under constent stress.

That is what we are doing. If people want to find the good, they need to know where to look. So we are telling people not to bother looking for good manners.

AYC, are you filling in for the grammer police? If so I hope you will give me a break here and there because I’m sometimes clueless when it comes to spelling and grammer.
