I was speaking to some colleagues recently and they (a man and woman) mentioned that they had been in 48 & 47 states. The man had not yet been to Alaska or North Dakota, while the lady had not yet been to Mississippi, Montana or North Dakota.

They both said they have plans to go to the states they were not yet visited (for business or pleasure) except Norh Dakota.

Now, I know SJS has been to all 50 states, but this is also open to others who may have been to North Dakota as well.

Is there anything to see in North Dakota that can not be experienced elsewhere? I would like to convince these colleagues that it is worthwhile to finish out the 50, but need a reason why to visit that last state.

    Thanks,

    G@W

Isn’t North Dakota’s main tourist attraction Lawrence Welk’s birthplace. 🙂

The Wolf (who has never been west of the Poconos in the US)

I have been in 31 which is not bad for a yeshiva guy with no money.

    Including Alaska.

I think they may have (had) a shchitah out there of geese. Not sure which city, though.

Besides for those I passed through driving to Florida once and Baltimore once, I’ve only been to NY, NJ, MD and FL. Where else would a yid need to go?

“Where else would a yid need to go? “

Rav Hirsch took a trip to the Alps. He was asked why he should waste his time doing such a thing. He responded that he thought that when he made it to Olam HaBah, HaShem might ask if he (Rav Hirsch) had seen His (HaShem’s) Alps.

That applies to the many natural wonders all over the world. For example, the Grand Canyon is as close as is possible to a natural proof of HaShem’s existence as one could imagine. Niagara Falls is an example of how no matter how much humans can try to screw it up, it is possible for HaShem’s beauty to come through. I could go on and on….

Who was it who first said the classic answer, that you are also asked if you “saw my Baba Kamma”?

Even with modern transportation, I think it was easier for Rav Hirsch to go to Switzerland than for many of us to pick up and go the the Grand Canyon. At least I got to Niagara Falls.

And if you’re not driving, then learn on the way to the “Alps.” (Or listen to a tape.) Then you can be yotzei kol hadai’os.

I heard it was Rav Boruch Ber who went to see the Alps.

Fargo, North Dakota used to be an ir v’em b’yisrael, and had a large community of observant jews (somrei shabbos) back when the New York community was not as observant as it is now. Unfortunately the community is now gone.

Hm, Rav Baruch Ber? Never heard that. But does that put a different spin on it for some people….?

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is in North Dakota.

I don’t think it would be much of a National Park if not for TR having lived there.

Wildlife viewing, just like any other open area.

Dr. Hall (or anyone else), have you been there?

    haifagirl – ditto!

I know someone who’s been to 49 states. They don’t want to go to the 50th because it’s so much cooler to say that you’ve been to all except one, than saying you’ve been to all. For some reason it seems more that way.

Tell em to forget North Dakota. Let em brag about the one state they’ve never been to.
