What are some non-religious things people often use religion for? By non-religious things I mean things that do not strengthen ones spiritual connection to Hashem and fall into the realm of chol apposed to kedusha.
By no means do all or most religious people do any of these things. A couple of things I can think of are
-Ethnic solidarity.
-Channel OCD behavior.
-Feel elite.
Any others?
-Oppressing others
-Enslaving others
-Causing wars and inspiring the troops to kill the infidel
-Killing infidels
-Abusing infidels
-Plundering and pillaging
For good examples of the misuse of religion look at ISIS, the crusades, Doeg, and Ahitofel.
Nationalistic movements.
