October 30, 2008 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #626312Mayan_DvashParticipantThat’s one of the main purposes of being here on this world.
October 31, 2008 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm #626313GILAMemberis it from doing something wrong from a diff life? or is to correct all the bad we do on this world wats it coming from?
October 31, 2008 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #626314iluvchulentMemberIt is through Nisyonoss that we grow in ruchnius. It is very easy to do the right thing when everything is running smoothly. If when a nisayon comes, it throws us totally off track, that shows that our dedication wasn’t strong enough. If however you continue on in spite of the nisayon, that shows that even the times it was easy, your performance was an Avodah Shlaima. Through being tested in this way, and overcoming our Yetzer Hara’ah, (and sometimes falling in, then picking ourselves back up and rising higher-Sheva yipol tzaddik vikum) we grow and become a Oved Hashem.
October 31, 2008 3:28 pm at 3:28 pm #626315charlie brownMemberit is to give us a chance to earn amazing rewards in olam habah.
October 31, 2008 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm #626316havesomeseichelMemberIt is to teach us about judging other people. Once you might know what someone is going through, then you will act differently to them.
October 31, 2008 3:57 pm at 3:57 pm #626317GILAMemberTHANX thats really profound
October 31, 2008 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #626318tzippiMemberI once heard a fascinating and beautiful series (series, and even then the person speaking said it was just the tip of the iceberg) on why bad things happen to good people. From a very, very kosher source, BTW. What you suggested, Gila, are just some of the possibilities. No one can, or SHOULD, try to figure out specifically why one got a certain nisayon. Maybe, maybe speaking directly to a rav who personally knows you may shed some light, but as you look for reasons behind the suffering, just know you will not find THE reason, and that’s not a bad thing in this world. I’ve very impressed with the posts so far and hope they give you some chizuk.
October 31, 2008 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #626319GILAMemberhold on i dont understand someone does something terrible to someone and that person has everything good in life and the victim has a miserable life it just doesnt match up
October 31, 2008 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #626320feivelParticipantgila
are you familiar with “olam ha bah” the world to come, the real world, the eternal world?
October 31, 2008 6:36 pm at 6:36 pm #626321iluvchulentMemberThe gemarah in Kiddushin says that Hashem gives a rasha good things in this world, so that when he dies, he wont be deserving of any reward for any good that he has done- bec. he has already been repaid. On the other hand, He gives affliction to a tzaddik in this world to be mechaper for any Aveiros, so when he dies, he will receive only rewards in Olam Habah. Keep in mind-Olam Hazeh Domeh Leprozdor. This world is only a means with wich to prepare ourselves for our eternal life- in Olam Habah. Yissurim can therefore be viewed in a better light, as a temporary discomfort paving the way for a permanent eternal reward.
November 2, 2008 1:16 am at 1:16 am #626322tzippiMemberGila, have you read Holy Woman? One of the most quoted stories is how Rebbetzin Kramer commented that Auschwitz was not a bad place (!!!). In her eyes, a bad place was somewhere where one couldn’t connect to Hashem, but she was always able to connect to Hashem, so it wasn’t bad in her eyes.
November 2, 2008 1:36 am at 1:36 am #626323JosephParticipanttzippi, good point. When Moshiach comes he will show us how EVERYTHING that ever occurred was good – even the holocaust!
November 2, 2008 1:38 am at 1:38 am #626324beaconParticipantWe always learnt in our hashkafa classes that hashem doesn’t give a nisayon to anyone who can’t handle it. I (try) to keep this in mind every day and it does help me cope with some things I have to deal with.
November 2, 2008 3:18 am at 3:18 am #626325classofTASHAMMemberNisyaonos teach us to be really sensitive to others. Especially when you are going through a personal-hush hush challenge in life, you see that we NEVER know what’s doing by the next person. They certainly don’t have a clue of what’s doing by you. But it’s hard to always remember that when we see things we don’t understand or like nor agree with.
November 3, 2008 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #626326noitallmrParticipantIts well known that when Hashem gives a person a Nisayon he also gives him/her the power to overcome it no matter how difficult one may think it is. This is a tremendous Chizuk if you think about it that if it seems impossible, Hashem will give you supernatural powers to overcome it.
This answers a Kashya I once heard about the Akeido: Avraham went to the Akeido with such a tremendous amount of joy that Hashem had commanded him to do something, and when Hashem revealed to Avraham that he must slaughter his own son, Avraham’s joy did not waiver for a second. But when the Soton came to tell Sarah about it she dropped dead out of shock. The obvious question is how is possible such a contrast, Sarah was even on a higher level of prophecy than Avraham, could she not also be Besimcho like him?
This answers it beautifully because it was Avraham’s Nisayon so he was given the power to do it (was one of the 10 nisyonos) but Hashem hadn’t given it to Sarah as a Nisoyon so she didn’t have the Koach for it which is why she died after hearing about it.
I hope this helps people realize that absolutely everything in this world is done with a Cheshbon and there is nothing hard that comes our way that we can’t overcome.
November 5, 2008 9:44 pm at 9:44 pm #626327GILAMemberwat if you get a nisayon that is impossible to handle now you might say theres no such thing but i gaurantee if i were to tell you wat it was youd c i am right
November 7, 2008 12:26 am at 12:26 am #626328noitallmrParticipantGo ahead give me an example…
November 27, 2008 3:32 am at 3:32 am #626330Bais Yaakov maydelParticipantGILA, your last comment:
“if Hashem brings us to it, He will bring us through it.”
there is NOTHING that we cant overcome, you know why??
becuase we were created biTZELEM ELOKIM. do you know what that means???
i may not be out of HS like you, but i know that when it says in sefer bereishis “VaYipach Nishmas Chaim B’Adam,” it means that Hashem “blew” into each one of us part of Himself. how amazing is that?? because we are GODLIKE and godly, we have the supernatural abilities to overcome a/t that comes our way, no matter how hard it seems. this tzelem Elokim gives us the power and kochot to do so.
also, it says in the parsha of akeidas Yitzchak, “ViHaElokim Nissah Et Avraham.” i learned 16 meforshim on this phrase. almost all of them mentioned the passuk in tehillim that says “Hashem tzaddik yivchan”—why?? why does Hashem test tzadikim?
the Rambam and Seforno say so that Avraham can take “min hakoach el haPoel,” so that he gets schar not just for having the right intentions (i really want to give my son to Hashem as a korban), but rather putting that into action and actually bounding his son up to the mizbayach.
i hope i dont sound like a typing mussar person. im really just a HS senior that remembers what i learned. anyway one more thing:
in bereishis rabbah it gives a mashal of a tzadiks nisayon to a jar-maker that wants to test out how strong his wares are. he wont take the weakest jar b/c it will crack the first time he hits it. he’ll take the strongest one. in the same way, Hashem tests those who can handle their nisyonos….CONSIDER YOURSELF ZOCHE TO BE TESTED BY HASHEM.
then you can say well doesnt Hashem KNOW if i can pass or not?
a)its your choice whether to pass the test or not; its not like you CANT do it, like i mentined before.
B) the Ramban and Abarbanel explain that Avrahams nisayon was in order to show the world how far his love for Hashem really is, and the never-ending boundaries to his yiras v’ahavas Hashem.
i think i went off on a tangent here, hope it makes things easier to understand,
feel free to ask questions could i could write a lot more on this topic 🙂
good luck! may you be zoche, GILA, to overcome all your Nisyonos.
