Nice guys finish last because they help others to finish first.

Maybe he means. hamaschil bemitzva omrim lo gemor, as it says, kol hamitzva, indicating that by mitzvos he should finish himself.
According to the goyim, nice guys don’t step on others toes to finish first, so they finish last. Finish first is not so obvious.
When you help others finish first you get the credit for “finishing first” where it counts
