Someone I know is looking to move to somewhere within a 2-3 radius of New York (Brooklyn area). Can anyone tell me where there is a place that housing prices are not too high (maybe less than $300,000 for a 3-4 bedroom house) and cost of living is reasonable?
July 14, 2010 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #690042outoftownjewParticipantI meant 2-3 hours radius
July 14, 2010 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm #690043SJSinNYCMemberYou can get a house in Lakewood for under $300,000.
July 14, 2010 3:46 pm at 3:46 pm #690044charliehallParticipantWaterbury, Connecticut. Two hours twenty minutes via Metro North train to Grand Central. Nice people. Big, beautiful houses for under $300,000. And the non-Jews appreciate what the frum community has done for the city.
July 14, 2010 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #690045philosopherMemberThe cost of a house is not the only consideration one should take into account when buying a house. Property taxes is a major issue that has just as big of of impact on s/o’s pocket as the cost of the house itself.
In addition to the current tax rate, it’s important to look at how much the rates increased in the last few years in the erea one is looking to by a house because it may be an indication of what will happen with the taxes in that area in the coming years.
I’m talking with 20/20 hindsight here.
July 14, 2010 3:52 pm at 3:52 pm #690046outoftownjewParticipant1) How many bedrooms? 2) Is there any day school/yeshiva that has relatively good secular education in Lakewood?
July 14, 2010 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #690047outoftownjewParticipantPhilosopher – I own a house currently and have moved b4. Thanks for the lesson but I realized that.
July 14, 2010 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #690048SJSinNYCMemberOutoftownjew – You would have to send your boys to Deal for that.
July 14, 2010 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #690049outoftownjewParticipantSo. Lakewood is out of the question I guess.
July 14, 2010 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #690050gavra_at_workParticipantScranton, PA: 2.5 hours to Boro Park (no traffic).
Dr. Hall’s suggestion is also valid.
July 14, 2010 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #690051SJSinNYCMemberoutoftown, its not far to Deal and there are people who send their kids there.
You can also check out Cherry Hill – I know there is a small community there but I don’t know what houses cost.
July 15, 2010 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #690052bptParticipantAll things being equal, if I needed to move within the parameter you set, Waterbury would be my choice. The rail commute alone makes it worthwhile. I can tell you, a 2.5 hour car commute can easily become a 4 hour trip. And what if you’re wiped out after a hard day? You can’t catch a nap while driving yourself.
July 15, 2010 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #690053outoftownjewParticipantBP Totty. These friends of mine have family in New York but don’t want to live “in town” (No offense to anyone there). But wants to be able to drive in on a Sunday or for shabbosim occasionally.
July 15, 2010 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm #690054tomim tihyeMemberPhiladelphia has several frum communities: Yeshiva area, Northeast, Bala Cynwyd. Don’t know exact cost of housing there, but I think it’s less than Lakewood and more than Waterbury.
It’s about a 2-hour drive from Brooklyn, but can be less with good timing.
July 15, 2010 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #690055arcParticipantwaterbury is a very small town.
Lakewood has schools especially day school with a good secular department but overall lakewood is very yeshivish.
July 16, 2010 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm #690056le7MemberBaltimore!!
July 16, 2010 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #690057SJSinNYCMemberMost housing in Philly is expensive. But beautiful. Bala Cynwyd has the most amazing old homes on nice size plots of land.
July 16, 2010 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #690058WolfishMusingsParticipantBaltimore!!
To the best of my recollection, Baltimore is not within a 2-3 hour radius of New York as specified by the OP. Of course, since I’m completely ignorant, it’s possible that I’m wrong, but I don’t believe that I am in this instance.

July 16, 2010 5:54 pm at 5:54 pm #690059tomim tihyeMemberWe know a family who bought a smallish house in Northeast Philly for under 200K, so I figured a slightly larger one could be about 300K. Maybe I figured wrongly, but I’m pretty certain that taxes are less than NJ’s.
July 16, 2010 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm #690060sof davar hakol nishmaMemberi know its far from a 2-3 hour drive (close to a weeks drive) and quite expensive but – LA is GORGEOUS and has a lovely community.
