It is important to compare lehavdil the Jewish New Year and the secular New Year. We look back to do teshuvah, keep the past in mind and they look forward, so they are happy and forget the past.

While there might have been a connection to what day some mythological baby born on Dec. 25 would have had a bris, the date was chosen relatively recently. The advantage of having a date mid-winter is that nothing is getting done so your one year measurements are more precise. Spring (as it had been) or Fall (as we do) are times of lively economic activity, which isn’t good for a statistical purpose. Their “New Year” is not about remembering or forgetting, and de facto marks the end of their end of year, post-solstice celebrations which is based on the Roman Saturnalia.

January 1, 2025 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #2347610KuvultParticipantEver heard of “New Year’s Resolutions”?
That’s where people look back at the past year & see things they regret or didn’t do as well as they should of & resolve to make a fresh start & do better this year.
How is that different than Rosh Hashanah?
“It is important to compare lehavdil the Jewish New Year and the secular New Year.”
Why is it “Important” to compare?
Is it a contest?January 1, 2025 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #2347596ujmParticipantB”H, it’s always a pleasure meeting a fellow Jewish Supremacist who isn’t afraid to point out the fact that we are incomparably far better than them.

January 1, 2025 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #2347567Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantWe have at least 4 new years, including a new year for kings. There is nothing wrong with celebrating getting a W2 or 1099 form for the year.
January 1, 2025 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #2347932SchnitzelBigotParticipantJanuary 1 means nothing to me.
The year 2024 will continue until March 25th as it always has since time immemorial.January 2, 2025 10:44 am at 10:44 am #2348137ujmParticipantSchnitzel: It would be better for you to disregard the so-called year count of 2024/2025 and let January 1 be more meaningful, than for you to give any credence to the yearly numbering system of 2024/2025, which was setup to count the years since the Christian Avoda Zora leader they worship, but disregard the date of January 1 — which is far far less problematic than the year count.
