A6KB, whether you want to admit it or not, the fact that you bothered saying goodbye says something. There was always an option to email a mod and you chose this. Again, I wish you hatzlacha in everything.
August 31, 2009 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #856036areivimzehlazehParticipantItzik,
Then why is your farewell taking so long. Can it possibly be you are not ONE HUNDRED PERCENT, completely sure of your assertions?

August 31, 2009 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #856037helpishereMemberA600KiloBear you sound like you haev been through a lot in life. I can only imagine the pain and hardships that you have and are enduring. But ask yourself this and if you struggle with the answer that means that you still believe there is master for this complex world.
If you truely belive that there is no reward and punishment than please agree to pass to me all the rewards for your good deeds past, present and future. And in turn you will take all the sins that I have and continue to accumulate in life. Its a win win situation. I win because I will leave this world with many rewards and no sins and you will lose nothing since after all you don’t believe in this anyway.
So can you please agree to give me all your rewards and take my sins?
August 31, 2009 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #856038A600KiloBearParticipantDeal, Helpishere. I have no expectation for reward or fear of punishment anymore. I once bet my chelek in olam haba on the Super Bowl when I first learned about olam haba years ago in day school.
As for the goodbye it was a technical error on my part and I should have done it through the mods.
This is my last, my very last, post here. Sorry but I must move on and let you live as well.
August 31, 2009 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #856039goody613Memberyou really don’t believe in G-D?! (what happened to the BS”D on top of every post?!!
August 31, 2009 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #856041helpishereMemberSo, A600KiloBear, do we have a deal? (if your thinking about this than you still have a spark in your JEWISH neshama. Don’t forsake Hashem. People are bad, and corrupt, but Hashem is not. Before you “leave” Judaism read Rabbi Keleman’s works: Permission to Believe and Permission to Recieve. You can also read a Garden of Emuna.
First read those and after you have truely educated yourself and looked at both sides of the argument can you make a wise decision. It’s your life, don’t mess up.
August 31, 2009 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #856042areivimzehlazehParticipanthelpishere- I’d like to welcome you (being that after all is said, this is the welcoming thread). But you’re not new. So- a thank you from the CR for stepping in.
August 31, 2009 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #856043feivelParticipantalbert einstein used “thought experiments” as part of his methodology.
heres one for you:
if youre not afraid of the truth take it seriously
it just takes a minute, but you have to use some effort to really feel yourself to be in the situation:
you are in a locked booth
there is a large lever
you can pull the lever towards the left, if you believe that you were formed by the random motion of atoms and their components over billions of years
you can pull the lever to the right if you believe you were created by the planning of an intelligence.
if you pull the lever to the side that is false, the booth will blow up
if you pull the lever the side of the truth the door of the booth will be open and you will be set free
if you do nothing, in 3 minutes the booth will blow up
you have no time for rationalizing, you can only do what your heart tells you
really try to experience this, dont just think about it, try to live it and get in touch with the inner you.
August 31, 2009 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm #856044areivimzehlazehParticipantfeivel- thank you; I knew you’d come through. Didn’t you once mention you were a professor on atheism?
August 31, 2009 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #856045feivelParticipantim not a professor of anything, B”H.
August 31, 2009 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #856046A600KiloBearParticipantLeft.
Just as I said once that I would have rather gone to the gas singing Ani Maamin than lived only to sing Hatikvah in a soccer stadium, I would do what I believe is true and that is the end of it.
The following is a later edit by the poster, after Feivel’s all-cap response:
August 31, 2009 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm #856048feivelParticipantI DONT BELIEVE YOU
August 31, 2009 9:38 pm at 9:38 pm #856049A600KiloBearParticipantYou were right because I did not read properly. See above. I’d probably try to bust out of it and if not I’d choose right. The existence of a creator does NOT mean the existence of a deity who presently controls the world.
August 31, 2009 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #856050feivelParticipant“The existence of a creator does NOT mean the existence of a deity who presently controls the world.”
could be i suppose, ,purely on a logical basis, that one one does not necessarily imply the other, or maybe it does, id have to give some long and deep thought on that.
thank you for being honest.
good beginning.

August 31, 2009 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #856051squeakParticipantIntelligent design. OK, that’s something. The Clockmaker who went away. It is an old argument, and many of the world’s most highly respected scientists believed it – including Isaac Newton. feivel, I doubt that it has ever been disproven on a purely logical basis. It certainly has many shortcomings, but I can only see the next step (that G-d is “assah, oiseh, v’yaaseh) as a leap of faith.
September 1, 2009 12:03 am at 12:03 am #856052feivelParticipantsqueak you misunderstood my post
i was responding to this statement: “The existence of a creator does NOT mean the existence of a deity who presently controls the world.”
this statement implies that the existence of a creator does not necessitate that there is currently an actively controlling diety.
my response was maybe *the fact of a creator* does and maybe it doesnt absolutely imply *current control*
A maybe implies B. i have to think about it
that the clockmaker is still here is emminently provable by logic. i dont believe in leaps of faith
September 1, 2009 12:27 am at 12:27 am #856053000646ParticipantEven if evolution had been completley disproven (wich it most defenitly has not been! on the contrary just about evrey expert in the natrual sciences and evrey leading authority in the natrual sciences say it has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt) and the watchmaker argument was a valid argument it still wouldnt mean anything.
The idea that we, one small group of one species on one planet out of probably hundreds of billions of planets, cirling one star out of BILLIONS of stars, in one galaxy out of BILLIONS of galaxies, in a universe so massive that even if we were to travel at the speed of light for hundreds of millions of years we would not even cross a fraction of it, are the reason this universe is here seems to be an extreme leap of faith.
September 1, 2009 12:51 am at 12:51 am #856054000646ParticipantTo claim that you, a human can logicly deduce the reasons why a being capable of making a universe like ours would do so from observing your little world which is smaller then you can imagine when compared to the size of the universe. (infinitly smaller then the period at the end of this sentence is when compared to the entire solar system just to give you a concept of what we are talking about.) Seems laughable to say the very least.

If anyone wants to repeat the evolution debate please start a new thread or continue in General Shmooze2. This will be the last post about evolution in this thread

September 1, 2009 8:14 am at 8:14 am #856056YW Moderator-80MemberThe above list goes on. The software would not accept the complete list, there is apparently a character limit.
The above signers had the courage and/or professional security to be able to sign such a statement. There are probably thousands more who would sign if they weren’t afraid of ridicule and professional repercussions from the fanatic evolutionists who will not tolerate free thought.
September 1, 2009 9:12 am at 9:12 am #856057A600KiloBearParticipantStrangely enough, I know or knew one of the signators personally (unless the signator is someone of the same name and a similar position) from the early 90’s when he was trying to augment his low university salary by trading in textiles in Moscow.
And I don’t understand how the topic of evolution was ever brought up in response to my post.
I don’t know either, I certainly didn’t bring it up…80
I don’t even pretend to know whether evolution as described by Darwin is correct. Accepting evolution and denying the presence of a deity do not necessarily go hand in hand.
In any case, I really would appreciate having my account deleted. My farewell is final; I am different from you and really don’t have a place here.
September 1, 2009 12:56 pm at 12:56 pm #856058Be HappyParticipantI wish you Hatzlocho in the future. Always remember Hashem loves you and is waiting with open arms to embrace you back into the fold. I am sure your friends and aquaintances and all of us in the CR can say the same.
September 1, 2009 12:58 pm at 12:58 pm #856059JosephParticipantIs anyone of us not different than another? Is the Morrocan the same as the Italian Jew? The Syrian the same as the Hungarian Jew? The Yemenite the same as the Yerushalmi?

I am going to stick with it for a little while longer, at least another Shabbos until Chai Elul or maybe until a couple of days before Rosh Hashanah since I might want to go away for Yom Tov no matter what.
If I have the same empty feeling I’ve had, and feel as uncomfortable as I have been feeling around all these families with children, and finally realize once and for all that I am totally different from people who believe, then I will have to move on in peace.
That is kind of what I think will happen but I have to go through the motions anyway right now so I might as well try to see if I can work things out.
On the other hand if I am either able to speak to someone or otherwise decide once and for all that it is true, then the only damage that was done is that some people read something online written under a screen name that I hardly use for anything else (except AIM which I have removed because it is so Web 1.0 LOL), and people have done much worse and stayed in the community in the end.
September 1, 2009 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #856061squeakParticipantR’ Itzik
You could never do damage, even supposing that everyone knows who you are. No matter how far you might choose to travel away from Yiddishkeit, anytime you return you are 100% full fledged member of Am Yisrael. As you said, there are plenty of examples of this.
Have you ever considered finding a new setting? ‘Change the place, change the mazal’. If you are uncomfortable where you are, perhaps there is a different place with more people who ARE like you.
September 1, 2009 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #856062JosephParticipantsqueak: this, seems to me to concern a great deal on the single status, and feeling part of the community whilst unmarried. Perhaps direction on that point, by someone who may be knowledgeable, could be of great assistance.
September 1, 2009 3:47 pm at 3:47 pm #856063cholentkugelkishkeMemberA600KiloBear – we’re sorry to see you leave. If you want to stop by for a quick L’chayim on the “Alocholic mixes” thread – please feel free to do so anytime. It’ll be my greatest kovod!
September 1, 2009 3:52 pm at 3:52 pm #856064helpishereMemberA600KiloBear, if you’re don’t like the “feeling <you get> around all these families with children” then maybe you should go to a community where this is not the emphasis. If its the location that makes you uncomfortable, change the setting! Don’t throw everything aside b/c of other people.
I know the pain and the uneasy feeling of being around people with large families, and the negativety associated with those that don’t want or are unable to have families. The pain is a test, and if its the people that make you uncomforbale than find another Jewish community that will make you comfortable.

You are most definitely not different from people who believe in H-shem.
Those who have emuna are as varied a bunch as you will find anywhere in the world.
-there are Chasidim whose speech and thought are in Yiddish, and whose world revolves around their chassidus.
-there is the suave and polished businessman who effortlessly blends in with his WASPy business associates.
-there are those who have been professionally trained to debunk missionaries and therefore know much more of other religions than the average Jew does.
Based on the level of knowledge, sophistication and humor in previous posts, you are very worldly-wise and capable of fitting in with the secular world.
You have the smarts and experience to do a lot of good.
You can no more disassociate yourself from your Jewishness than you can from your humanity.
I wish you much hatzlocha.

September 1, 2009 7:55 pm at 7:55 pm #856070areivimzehlazehParticipantItzik,
The fact that you are willing to stick it out just a bit more… I am awed.
That’s exactly how we’re advised to fight the yetzer horah- telling ourselves we will fight just one more battle, one more hour, day, week… YOU CAN DO IT.
I really have complete faith in your abilities.
As some members have already pointed out, it had occurred to me that “mishaneh makom, mishaneh mazel” seems to apply well in your case.
From the many stories you’ve shared, it sounds like the place where you live requires a herculean will and effort just to stay frum.
Your situation is inevitable. We are only mortal humans.
I will reiterate that I am awed that you are putting up a fight.
Much Hotzlocha, Itzik. We look forward to hearing from you.
We are davening for you.

Not so much of an effort to stay frum (in fact the lack of availability of junk and processed kosher food here helps me stay healthy) but the very opposite in fact – a very strong community which is like a fishbowl for a private person like me who does not put marriage and family ahead of career and does not like admittedly well meaning people to poke into his personal or even business life.
The only other alternative for me in the present economy is working in India while living in EY, and the prospect of living in EY, which is an even bigger fishbowl, is really not for me.
At least here I live far from the shul and can stay home if I want, behind my double doors and far from anyone from the community. It is only in shul and on Shabbos that the questioning and kibitzing starts and if I decide to I can live with that.
In EY your neighbor is (usually) Jewish and feels he has a need to know everything about you and to waste your time with stories and questions. On my last trip to Tverya I literally had to scream at a strange woman for peeking over my laptop screen in a hotel lobby – in EY looking over someone’s shoulder is not considered rude but in civil society it sure is. (You don’t want to know what I screamed at her in Yiddish to send her scurrying away in fear LOL!).
Living in India is going a little too far in terms of remaining private. Then again if there is a shul and a rav it might be enough for me if need be, at least temporarily.

one thing you have to admit is nowhere else will people who don’t know you be upset youre leaving their beliefs. No other nation would everyone be crying and praying when 6 people in India who they don’t know are trapped.

A very happily and voluntarily exiled New Yorker. The only thing I miss from NY (or EY) is the ability to buy sforim, Jewish music albums, tzitzis in my preferred size, and Sukkos and Pesach necessities easily. The rest we have here.
I needed to come back to NY to recharge 4 years ago and stayed and worked 2 years instead of just sitting and learning for 2 – 4 months which would have been a much better plan.
September 1, 2009 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #856075areivimzehlazehParticipantItzik,
I hear the problem with nosy people. And I agree it is a terrible middah.
But that is a separate issue. That is not the core of the problem. In my limited capacity, I can’t imagine that being THE cause here…
I don’t mean to be nosy (not funny), but can we take this apart?
1. You are an older single
2. You live somewhere in the Ukraine area
3. You value your privacy- extremely
4. You have big questions regarding faith
5. You are an intelligent & intellectual person
6. You have been in this matziv before
7. There is a major (bad) influence in your life which you mentioned you’ve walked away from in the past
This is all I (think I) know- I’m sure there’s much much more.
To tackle each point:
1. There is a lot of stigma and pressure regarding “older singles” in the Jewish communities. THIS REFLECTS NO FAULT OF YOURS.
Every older single goes through big nisyoinos. They don’t win every battle, some don’t win the war. But Hashem DOES give the koiyach to win. It’s up to you.
A lot has to do with perspective and emunah.
2 & 3. Living in a secluded close knit Jewish community is what causes this “fish bowl” you describe. There is nobody else to rely upon- you only have each other. Moving to a metropolis of Jews will ironically offer you the privacy you seek- even though it may be more “closed in” or “crowded with Jews” or “narrow minded”, you will most likely be less “bothered”. And you will also most probably be very close to major business areas.
4 & 5. GET THEM ANSWERED. You are not G-d (sorry). We all have questions- don’t let them fester until explosion time. Please.
If you find it difficult having deep personal conversations with a Rov and revealing your doubts, try starting online. There are numerous websites that offer “ask the Rov”. Shoot away- ask every question you have. They will direct them to the most appropriate party. And if you are not satisfied with the answers, that does not mean there isn’t a more satisfying answer available.
** If it took you all this research, knowledge and time to come up with the question- then it will take at least that much to come up with the answer!
6 & 7. I’ve taken the liberty to surmise that this person still has an effect on you; and that here lies the core of the situation. I can not speak further as I don’t have any other info regarding this matter. But if I am correct, then it is high time to remove yourself from this person’s reach and influence. You are only human and as such, you’re not above influence.
Do with this post as you wish.
All I know is that we care about each other- yes- kol yisroel areivim zeh lazeh. I really believe it.

6 & 7 – no, the only effect he has on me is that I found out just this past Shabbos what he is still up to, and well, put it this way, I don’t envy his oilam haba. Then I found out where his major donor stands and I don’t envy his oilam hazeh either.
2 & 3 – no, I prefer this to NY or EY. If I had felt this way in NY I’d have just run away to another state, changed my name and that would be it. Whatever the problems here, there are many advantages as well. As bad as this is, NY was more of a fishbowl with every storekeeper asking me who I am, where I am from, finding out I am unmarried etc. Here I get everything except what is sold on shul grounds from an anonymous supermarket where a non-Jewish cashier scans my order, takes my card, hello, goodbye. No one looks in my cart, no one looks over my shoulder.
4 & 5 – all ask the rov sites I have tried have referred me to – a live rov LOL!
1 – whatever happens, happens. But I will not be forced into marriage. The pool of shidduchim for me is small and not appealing and it is not as if I can’t live alone. If it happens, it happens. If I truly feel happier alone, I will probably look to work in places where I can only be alone, and well, it will be unusual if I stay frum and alone but so be it.
September 1, 2009 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm #856077areivimzehlazehParticipantItzik,
Regarding privacy, I can’t believe what you describe not to be an exaggeration. Every store owner, cashier etc.?? Why don’t they give me so much attention 😉 You must really stand out of a crowd 😉
Why is it NY, E”Y or the Ukraine… what happened to everything in between?
So they referred you to a live Rov- why not try it out? I personally find it much easier to “spill my guts” to an anonymous person than to someone I know well.
Regarding shidduchim, who is forcing you into anything? You need to find the right one, not just anyone.
“If I truly feel happier alone…”- do you believe that? You do not have control over whether you get married or not, but I don’t feel that’s the correct or healthy perspective. It’s a pronounced shrug. And we all know you didn’t really give up yet.

PS- if you respond to this now, do not think I am ignoring as I need to step away from the CR, most probably for the night. Hatzlocha!

Another very big issue, perhaps the biggest, is that I spent hmm..7 years, during 2 of which I was frum (from 8th grade in a non frum Jewish school through required courses in college), being taught that the Torah was written by man and that basically the Torah view of Hashem is not correct. The logical conclusion to draw from that is atheism; they actually taught that each shem Hashem was the name of a different getschke chas vesholom (and no matter what I don’t think that is correct and neither do non believing “Biblical” scholars today; I graduated college in 1988 when the Documentary Hypothesis was taken the way we take Torah meSinai).
It is very hard to forget that, especially when you don’t feel 100% comfortable in the community.

Regarding the store owners in the frum world; I am a man who proudly cooks and a technical guy. A butcher or grocer who deals with women all day, or a hardware store man who deals with vexing questions from balebatim who don’t know which way to turn a screw, obviously wants to speak to me. And when 2 yidden speak, it begins with Jewish geography and then turns to personal questions. Then the butcher turns out to be related to a close friend and quickly becomes a well meaning shadchan(this actually did happen), the grocer asks me when he’s going to sell me candy for my lechaim, etc.
I don’t want to live in the US, and Canada where I actually am entitled to citizenship is even less attractive because while the communities are nice the tax system is choking and the weather is very unpleasant. Any other attractive place except EY is closed to me for citizenship reasons; you cannot just show up in an EU country and open a business the way you can in the developing world. Ditto for Australia which is probably the closest Jewish community to the Far East.
September 2, 2009 1:22 pm at 1:22 pm #856080Be HappyParticipantCheck that you are unable to move to England. Many Yiden have moved to England because their grandparents were from an E.U country

Why would I want to live in Muslim infested Englandistan? My experience there has not been a good one in terms of either the communities (too formal) or the surroundings (crime plus Islam).
Anyway I have one grandparent who was born in an EU country which probably is not enough.
September 2, 2009 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm #856082JewessMemberNice to see you’re still around A600KiloBear. Having that simple belief in God is a blessing, in my opinion. Sometimes I wonder if people who seem so strong in their faith don’t have doubts too. It’s hard to believe without proof, but sometimes you see God without looking for him.
The other day I was driving westward during sunset, and the sun was so huge, like a ball of fire. I definitely saw God in that. Sometimes you get inspired and you’re so sure He’s there, watching over you, and other times you feel a void, like you’re stuck in a cold place. Stay strong, and don’t take the “yenta” questioning affect how you feel about God. Believing in God’s existence has nothing to do with the way you are expected to live your life, by others.
September 2, 2009 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #856083areivimzehlazehParticipantJewess- thank you, that was an inspiration.
September 2, 2009 7:57 pm at 7:57 pm #856084Be HappyParticipantOne grandparent born in the EU is enough for you to be able to live in England. I just thought you might find a place that you feel more comfortable living. eg Newcastle Salford or maybe Middlesex.
September 2, 2009 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm #856085A600KiloBearParticipantBS”D
Salford is Manchester? I would do anything to live in close proximity to Haroun Cohen of Ku Klutz Kartel fame for as long as it took me to make that yitzur feel so unwelcome that he would move to Teheran where he belongs. I could probably do it in 3-4 weeks plus another 60 days as a guest of Her Majesty for cruelty to animals. Probably would be worth it.
Newcastle has a community?
Coming from the US and living in the FSU, I could never get accustomed to the UK.

Thanks for everything and gut Shabbos. I’m probably returning to lurk mode until next Thursday (I work a limited schedule on Friday and a full Sunday so Thursday night for me is like motzash for most people) or even until erev Yom Tov because of my schedule.
I will make my final decision by erev Yom Tov.
