Hi,
I’m Michael and I’m from Queens. My oldest daughter is starting eighth grade and we’re starting to look into different high schools for her. Me and my wife never went through the yeshiva system and we need some general info about some different schools like…
1. How Beis Yaakov is it.
2. Size
3. What are the teachers like. warm, stand-offish…etc.
4. Do they emphasis middos and growth.
5. what type of girls do they attract.
6. Do they have a good acedemic program for secular subjects or not.
I realize I should find out info from the different schools, but I feel they’re not objective. And I will obviously find out info from other parents but I figured posting here might open my mind up to different ideas that I would’nt otherwise get.
(P.S please no negative remarks)
Thanks
Kol Tuv

My daughter is starting high school this coming year, so I don’t have any practical guidance to offer (ask me again in November).
However, if you live in Queens and are looking to send her to a school in the area, I would advise you to speak to your neighbors and friends (especially those with teenage daughters) and get their experiences.

A principal, guidance counselor, or an experienced (older grades) teacher. Ask about where most of the girls go, and why. If the person knows your daughter well, ask about where girls ‘like her’ have gone.

August 12, 2010 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #715625aries2756ParticipantTag frowns on taking girls from out of the area as do many other local schools. Shevach is a great school and has many teachers from the FR area. The Krohns (as in Rabbi Pesach Khron and his wife) are very involved in the school. Ask in your own shul where the girls go and then hang around the schools and see for yourself what type of girls and families belong to those schools.
Another greaat High School for girls is Manhattan High School. It has a very well rounded program including Music (literally musical instruments), choir, etc. if your daughter doesn’t mind the ride into the city. Really a top notch high school.

August 25, 2010 1:14 am at 1:14 am #715628shindyMemberAfter the yomim tovim, you will IY”H be getting mailings from the high schools with information about their open house and entrance exams. And don’t forget your daughter will have her own idea about which school she would like to attend, depending on where her friends are going.
By the way, the Bais Yaakov in Manhatten is VERY expensive, so be warned….
I am not so keen on fourteen year olds having to commute too far so I would look into Shevach if I were you. I never sent there but I know that Mrs. Krohn is excellent, I think she is one of the principals. GOOD LUCK and a good gebenched year!

October 3, 2010 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #715630pascha bchochmaParticipantI know many people who went there, and Manhattan High School for Girls is amazing, especially if your daughter enjoys challenging academics. I also heard from reliable sources that while the families that go to taht school range from very very frum, meyuchas, families, to a little on the modern side, they KAH have not had anyone go off the derech in the past 10 years, due to the personal attention that EVERY single girl receives. over the high school career, girls become like a part of the family. The only downside is the tuition, it is supposed to be very very expensive.
October 3, 2010 3:41 pm at 3:41 pm #715631Sister BearMemberI just want to say that just because something is called one thing, that doesn’t mean it is. Just because a school is called a Bais Yaakov, and I’m not even talking about the girls, but it doesn’t mean that they run the school like a Bais Yaakov.
Don’t believe everything the administration says, they want you to go to their school and can be two faced liars. Talk to girls but don’t ask them in general how the school is, ask them if they would switch out, about a regular school day, how they like the principal.
Be very careful!!!!!
October 27, 2010 7:12 pm at 7:12 pm #715632bygirl93MemberTAG is an amazing school- they do not frown on taking girls from queens they frown on taking bkyln girls! because there are so many bklyn schools! every grade in the high school has anywhere from 5 to 10 girls! (estimate) there is a bus that provides transportation so she doesn’t have to take public transportation! This is my 14th year in TAG and I don’t have a single complaint! the teachers are the best! the girls are really nice! if you don’t believe me the open house is next week! come see for yourself!
