A “near miss” means they almost missed – in other words, they collided. Think about it. April 8, 2011 1:47 am at 1:47 am #757164 eclipseMember The cup….half-full,or half-empty. April 8, 2011 1:11 pm at 1:11 pm #757166 yossi z.Member I don’t think the cup example fits here … What I think it is, that people used to say nearly hit but missed which came to be near miss 😀 Zuberman! 😀 April 8, 2011 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm #757167 eclipseMember I stand corrected. April 8, 2011 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #757168 ZeesKiteParticipant What is the problem. It was near. It missed. That’s all. More like the top half of the cup full vs. the bottom half of the cup empty. You might also ask why we talk about things that are underground or underwater when they are, in fact, in the ground and in the water. April 8, 2011 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #757171 Avram in MDParticipant I think ZeesKite is right. A near miss is indeed a miss, and the “near” emphasizes the closeness attained by the almost-colliding subjects. April 8, 2011 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm #757172 WolfishMusingsParticipant they are in fact under water and under ground. you might argue that “in” is more specific. Very well. I stand corrected. My apologies. The Wolf April 8, 2011 5:06 pm at 5:06 pm #757173 gefenParticipant I don’t know. I don’t agree with Zeeskite and Avram in MD. To me a near miss means it almost missed which in turn means it HIT. So nice to have these conversations about such important matters, isn’t it? 🙂 I guess with all the serious stuff going on in the world, we just need a little fun. Oy – if this is fun, we better all get a life 🙂 Author Posts Viewing 11 posts - 1 through 11 (of 11 total) You must be logged in to reply to this topic.
