(probably eaten by a squirrel or something) We are so sad because we were going to do shiluach hakan tonight! Has anyone ever had this? Will she come back and lay more or should we clean up the nest?
May 4, 2011 1:42 am at 1:42 am #764197deiyezoogerMemberit’s a very big mitzvah to do but good luck on this one, she’s probably finish with this one.
May 4, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am #764198BSDMemberI believe it needs to be a kosher bird. Are Robins kosher? My local kosher restaurants don’t serve robin.
There is someone in BP that advertises that he does shiluach hakan kihalacha for a nominal fee.

the european robin is not
you need to do the Mitzvah at night because during the day the father robin sits on the nest.
im betting your robin will lay some more eggs

May 4, 2011 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm #764202popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy friends father had some birds nest in his tree. So somebody said, “hey, you can do shiluach hakan!”
Responded he, “I don’t want to, I like them.”
May 4, 2011 3:37 pm at 3:37 pm #764203ursula momishMemberA very nice children’s book was recently published, “The Mitzvah That Landed On My Window,” by Chaim Rowner, with actual photographs of a robin’s nest on the family’s windowsill and the development of the eggs into nestlings, and how they performed the mitzvah.

I think this is a mistake. “Asher korcha baderech” – the nest can’t be on private property.
I got my house this way. I was at a friend’s house and he told me he was going to do shiluach hakan on the birds in his backyard tree. I told him it can’t be private property, so he was immediately mafkir the tract. While he was up in the tree, I got two eidim and gained a piece of land.
May 4, 2011 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #764206YW Moderator-80Memberall one has to do is be mafkir the nest and eggs or young chicks.
some say even that isnt necessary because since one wants to do a Mitzvah the chatzer was never koneh the nest because it is lo nicha lay

Oops! At least I got the right sedra :). You are correct, I meant ki yikarei but must have focused on the root of the word and gotten mixed up (K-R-E).
80-
I know that, and you know that, but I’m just telling it like it happened. He could have been mafkir just the tree but he didn’t. Anyway, I don’t think the city would have allowed the subdivision so he would have had to give up the rest of the property to me anyway.
