Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”.
September 5, 2012 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #992027aurora77ParticipantHi iced,
I’ve heard it stated as “anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” But, regarding it’s origins, I am completely in the dark!

September 5, 2012 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #992029The_Cool_JewMemberIt’s when everything that possibly can go wrong, goes wrong. Example: You drop a piece of buttered toast, and it lands face down.
September 5, 2012 10:26 pm at 10:26 pm #992030sheinMemberTCJ a/k/a Moishy: And if it lands face up, you’ll eat it?

My kitchen’s got tiles does it go the same for tiles?
September 6, 2012 12:13 am at 12:13 am #992034HaLeiViParticipantPaul Harvey said, “When there’s a 50/50 chance that something will go wrong, nine out of ten times it will.”
September 6, 2012 1:11 am at 1:11 am #992035akupermaParticipantMurphy’s law is that whatever can go wrong will. In our history we see the opposite. HaShem causes things to go right even against all earthly logic. Purim is the classic example.
If Murphy’s Law held true, the Nazis would have taken Palestine and destroyed all its Jews (one battle going the other way), or would have stayed in control a bit longer in Europe wiping out most survivors (against, almost happened, but HaShem intervened to prevent it). In the seder, we celebrate that Murphy’s law doesn’t apply to the Jews.

Are pogroms, expulsions, massacres ,the destruction of two Bais Hamikdash and thethe holocaust examples of Hashem not letting things go wrong?
September 6, 2012 2:02 am at 2:02 am #992037Sam2ParticipantActually, Murphy’s Law is that if you leave something with the possibility of an error up to anyone but yourself, that person will mess up (it’s names after a dude named Murphy after a mistake with with Air Force planes). What we call Murphy’s Law is actually something different that just got merged together with it after time.
September 6, 2012 2:22 am at 2:22 am #992038oomisParticipantI wanted to meet Murphy, but on the way there, my car ran out of gas, my cell phone went dead, and the GPS told me I was in Marrakesh. The open sun roof got stuck and it started to rain. Then things started to go wrong.
September 6, 2012 2:45 am at 2:45 am #992039akupermaParticipantlesschumras: We’re here, are we not. We have survived. Where are the Romans? Where are the Egyptians? Ever run into an Austro-Hungarians? or a Czarist? or a real Nazis (other than the clowns who are the neo-nazis)? Throughout the world there are whole nations known only from archeology, yet we survive. The Celts were once the domiant group in all of western Europe – they survive as quaint minorities in a few fringe areas, with little left of their language and culture. The American Indians once ruled a continent with a civilization that managed to surpass the Europeans in some areas – now they survive as memories of people who are 1/32 Indian and in reservations which are in some ways no more than nice concentration camps in remote areas.
You are greedy to expect that HaShem should let us live like rich kings in what is only a mere corridor. We should be grateful that he has allowed us to survive in spite of enormous odds.

It’s all there in tenach – the tochacha and other places.
Hashem said He would punish us, but never destroy us.

September 11, 2012 3:13 am at 3:13 am #992045BaalHaboozeParticipantthey say a guy named Murray wanted to be famous but kept failing with one obstacle after another hindering his efforts. Finally one day, when he was on a rooftop a strong wind came and pushed him down and he died. Legend has it that he died with a smile on his face thinking that at least he’ll be famous AFTER his death, and that they’ll coin his situation as Murray’s law…
