When you daven for someone (not for a refuah Shlema) do you have them with their mother’s name or father’s?
Sources please! 🙂
Thanks
November 24, 2011 6:06 am at 6:06 am #830247old manParticipantFather,as they are called up to the Torah.
It’s a minhag, no source needed, feel free to change it. God can figure it out either way.
November 24, 2011 6:28 am at 6:28 am #830248HaLeiViParticipantMother’s name. Many Yehi Ratzons have that even for yourself.
November 24, 2011 8:07 am at 8:07 am #830249amichaiParticipantwhen you are davening for someone for any yeshua, it’s the mothers name. when someone is nifter, it goes to the fathers name.
November 24, 2011 3:52 pm at 3:52 pm #830250ZeesKiteParticipantMother’s name. I once heard it’s a Gemarah somewhere. Attention all Talmud Technicians. Can you back this?
November 24, 2011 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #830251☕️coffee addictParticipantMy rebbe R Shragie Neuberger said the reason for saying the mothers name is that when the chips are down (a person is sick) you don’t take any chances (for sure its the son of the mother b/c by the father its only a rov)
November 24, 2011 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #830252ZeesKiteParticipantWhere are the Techies? Oh. They’re busy learning!
November 24, 2011 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #830253yitayningwutParticipantHey he’s my rebbi too! (wasn’t in his shiur but used to go to the popcorn chabura)
November 24, 2011 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #830254HaLeiViParticipantActually, I think the reason is because that is the name of the Guf.
ZeesKite, the Gemara (Shabbos 66b) is talking about a Lachash. I don’t know if that is a proof to our discussion but it could be a Zecher Ladavar.
November 24, 2011 8:16 pm at 8:16 pm #830255☕️coffee addictParticipantYitay,
I loved going to his popcorn chaburas

November 25, 2011 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #830262yitayningwutParticipantAbsolutely. And the Wednesday lunch, spaghetti with cheese and sauce and mushrooms and onions. Probably has a name, it was delicious.

November 27, 2011 4:12 am at 4:12 am #830268Busy As A BeeParticipantThanks for totally hijacking my question 🙂
November 27, 2011 7:27 am at 7:27 am #830269old manParticipantBack to the issue. I seem to be the only one recommending using the father’s name.
1. It doesn’t really matter.
2. We use the mother’s name for a sick person. Since we are not talking here about a tefilah for a refuah shleimah, we have two precedents for using the father’s name for tefilos. A, the brachah given at a bris. B, the Ribono Shel Olam tefilah on Shalosh Regalim when taking out the Torah.
3. I stand by my opinion.
4. See #1
November 27, 2011 10:38 am at 10:38 am #830270☕️coffee addictParticipantSorry busy, after I posted that last post I felt bad for hijacking it
November 27, 2011 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #830271LukeMemberFor specific physical needs of a live person, the mother’s name is used. In other cases, the father’s name is used.
Sorry, don’t have the sources now.
November 27, 2011 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #830272yitayningwutParticipantold man –
Maybe you use a different siddur but unless I’m dreaming in the prayer on yom tov my siddur says to say your mother’s name.
