Loves me my Scotch. I asked a rather strict Kashrus person about Macallan and he said “not recommended.” However, I was at a Chasidic gathering where they said “it’s fine.”

I know about the single sherry cask vs. the double sherry cask, etc. It’s just that most of the Scotches I like are being counter-boycotted because they boycott Israel (Bowmore and the like).

Does anyone know of any GOOD kosher non-political single malt scotches? What are your faves?

I personally love the peaty, smokey flavo(u)r of the Bowmore but I won’t buy it anymore.

Auchentoshan now holds a hechsher under london beth din. Dayan Weiss, the Minchas yitzchock was famous for saying that all scotch is kosher. Sherry he said id not a problem because it does not add flavour it just takes away a bitter flavour. Additionally, the sherry barrels used in scotch are reused many times and the flavour is not apparent therefore it is botul beroiv. Dayan Westheim of igud harabonim (KIR) in manchester concurs with him as do many gedolim who have researched scoth properly. However, if you want to be extremly machmir and are looking for a whisky that absolutely everyone will drink, even those who want an extremely strict hechsher – e.g. you are making a kiddush and do not want to have to explain to everyone the whole sugya there is only one whisky with an extremely strict hechsher and that is called hamshkeh. it is certified by Keddaisia of London. I do not know if it is currently available in the states. however, beware, it is a pretty garbage whisky.

Whoooooa!! Sorry, I didn’t respond so quickly to this thread yet. Other things more important came up (yes, even more important than these CR threads!)so I couldn’t respond yesterday. I apologize.

…..(pause)….alright, ALRIGHT, I admit, I intoxicated myself into a booze-induced 14 hour slumber early yesterday evening and was in LALA-Land till the morn! But that was the (ninty) FIRST time this ever happened to me.(cough, cough) Honest.

O.k….ahem…I…uh… hate to rain on your parade YT, and definitely hate to kill any thread and I DON’T want to disappoint anybody so I’ll go straight to the point. I am NOT a MAYVIN in drinks, I just like TO drink. Period. There I said it. Hey, who ever said you need to KNOW your booze to BE a BaalHabooze? 🙂 Kinda like sushi. Love ’em sushi, but for the love of G-D can never remember the names of them (Besides BaalHabooze is a cooler name then BaalHasushi, y’think?) Again, I’m sorry to disappoint anyone with hopes of a long drasha of technicalities of the makings or political stances of scotch. So you can put away your pens and notepads and perhaps a good idea would be to call up OU or any other Hashgacha Organization for the status of your favorite scotch.

I can say that I do drink Macallan (can still taste it on my lip, hehe). I was told some time ago that all the Glens shouldn’t be used, but I’m not SO particular, so I haven’t had any of those in a while. Otherwise, I CAN say that I love WINES best from all alcoholic beverages. tata…

Englishveg: Rabbi Eidlitz of Kosher Quest out here in LA writes on his website regarding Scotch: “No Hashgacha required on any except when label states aged exclusively in sherry casks, sherry finish, port finish or dual cask finish.”

That is why Macallan is not recommended.

Rabosai, is this not the view of rov Poskim? Seriously, I need to know as I have been drooling to try Macallan. Help a sober brother out.

Oh, and Celtic Malts writes on their site: “Some casks are so deeply impregnated by their previous contents that the influence on the character of the whisky is not only observable to the general public, but intentionally creates part of the flavour profile of the whisky. Such for example, is Macallan. Particularly because Macallan deliberately uses only ex-sherry casks, all Macallan is deemed not kosher.”

    Just sayin’.

R shlomom miller from toronto (one of the biggest poskim in NA) says that sherry casks are not a problem. he says theres a mefurashe’ bais yosef that says that yayin surruf made in casks that were used for goyish wine is fine. so i drink it.

    #823564

Englishveg- Even more than the fact that the sherry casks were “used many times”, after they are used for sherry these casks are completely taken apart. After they are power washed, they are put back together, and then used for aging scotch. The sherry reacts with the wood to decompose it into a sugar (not entirely sure how this part works), and this sugar flavor –NOT the sherry flavor– is why these barrels are used for sctoch. Due to all of this put together, my Rav holds that sherry casks are not an issue.

So am I following an unnecessary chumrah? Anyone else hear that there is a problem with sherry casks?
