Has anyone ever heard of women not having to wait the full six hrs. between meat and milk even when not pregnant (choleh)?
March 16, 2011 1:07 am at 1:07 am #750375popa_bar_abbaParticipantNot mentioned in Shulchan aruch, rema, shach, taz in siman 89 where you’d expect it to be mentioned. Never heard such a thing either.
March 16, 2011 1:13 am at 1:13 am #750376sayidMemberI believe i saw it in the laws of meat and milk book. He is the mechaber of kitzur shulchan aruch on basar vechalav and melicha. He quotes it as being heard from Harav S.Z. Aurebach.I was wondering if anyone else has heard such a thing.

March 16, 2011 3:32 am at 3:32 am #750379smartcookieMemberAnonymrs- this is very interesting. Do you know what Heter you have not to wait? Is it only the women? I really wonder what’s behind it cuz I never heard of someone not waiting.
March 16, 2011 5:40 am at 5:40 am #750380rebdonielMemberOne should follow the minhag of their edah. German Jews wait three hours, and Dutch Jews wait 60-72 minutes depending on different opinions.
March 16, 2011 6:29 am at 6:29 am #750381Mother in IsraelMemberSomeone told me that she only waits 3 hours when she’s nursing. Apparently her husband showed her source for that but I don’t know what it is.
March 16, 2011 12:14 pm at 12:14 pm #750382anonymrsParticipanti dont want to say too much, but this was my husbands minhag before we got married, and we asked our rav right after we got married and he told us we could continue this way. this is not just for women- its fofr our whole family. but it is a VERY individual situation, and i dont know anyone else who holds like we do.
March 16, 2011 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #750383truth be toldMemberLots of Yekkehs only wait three hours
March 16, 2011 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm #750384guy-ochoMemberPopa: don’t you claim to be female?
I usually tend not to rely on the halachic rulings and information of women. I’m not being chauvinistic, just following the mesorah.
March 16, 2011 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #750385YW Moderator-80Membersome wait 5 1/2 hours (rov of the sixth)
March 16, 2011 4:49 pm at 4:49 pm #750386dvorakMemberYou mean aside from women who follow one of the aforementioned minhagim? No. I have only heard of pregnant/nursing women possibly being allowed. And that was not a blanket heter, it was a case-by-case thing, and even where it was allowed, some were told they still have to go according to a legitimate minhag (such as the yekke or dutch) and can’t just eat a steak and wash it down with milk.

I should clarify that, as per the teshuva I quoted (the edit was a removal of a link to that teshuva), there are only grounds to be lenient in case of need; it’s not a “blanket heter”. Sefardim might also keep the six hours more stringently than Ashkenazim.
March 16, 2011 11:56 pm at 11:56 pm #750389StuffedCabbageParticipantI wait 5and a half hours and im a regular ashkenaz!! every person is different!!

That is my other personality. This one doesn’t know what you are talking about.
March 17, 2011 1:13 am at 1:13 am #750391tro11Memberguy-ocho: Popa’s longstanding policy is that popa never has, never does, and never will give any indication whatsoever about his or her identity or provide any identifying information, so I’m not sure where you got that from.
March 17, 2011 2:16 am at 2:16 am #750392sayidMemberI was asking about women in general, not about pregnant women. just regular women every day, whose husbands follow waiting six hrs. btw the thing of not waiting at all just birchas hamazon and kinuach hadacha is brought in the SA i think its from a tosfos?
March 17, 2011 3:35 am at 3:35 am #750393enahakMemberif i remember correctly there’s 4 specific genes that originate in the middle east and africa that deal with enhancing dairy digestion, maybe it would depend which ones you have or what combination you have.
also interesting, the dutch jews who wait the least amount of time are over 50% western european Ychromosomes, having the highest “intermarriage” rate., i guess those dutch took a south american policy on them..

There is no difference between men and women for this halacha. The fact that the leniency is mentioned regarding someone who is a new, expecting, or nursing mother is a proof that it does not apply to a regular woman, who has to wait just as long as a man.
