What on EARTH is it supposed to be about? The prompt is incredibly vague…
If you went to Michlalah, what did you write and how did you know to write it? Do you know what they want?
November 14, 2013 12:24 am at 12:24 am #987345streekgeekParticipantNot sure, but you could you post what you wrote to help others who need to write it…
November 14, 2013 12:27 am at 12:27 am #987346WIYMemberI had someone else write mine.
November 14, 2013 12:44 am at 12:44 am #987347SecularFrummyMemberSpeaking from personal experience, the vague prompt allows an applicant to show how well they will conform with the goals of Michlalah. Hoping that you understand that this seminary wants its student to be able to apply the education received to practical, everyday life as a Jew, that should be apparent in your personal statement. Along with that, you should express your desire to better yourself and the people you will be surrounded with while at their institution. So let them know what you have to offer others. In general, speak highly of Michlalah, and show your desire to be apart of the greatness you see in the school.
November 14, 2013 1:46 am at 1:46 am #987348frumgirl93Memberthey make the prompt as vague as possible to give you flexibility to write about anything you want. Write about things that are important to you such as family, or friends… and write about things you’ve done in school and what you have learnt from it. It can be fluffed up, but remember that your interviewer will have it open when he/she interviews, and he does have notes on it that make you unique and ask you casual questions about it. Don’t stress over it too much, and enjpy the most incredible year!!!
November 14, 2013 1:52 am at 1:52 am #987349Torah613TorahParticipantWrite something incredibly vague.
November 14, 2013 1:57 am at 1:57 am #987350sem613Participantwhat was the prompt?
i dont even remember anymore what i wrote about, and my laptop has lost all its files many times since then. but if you tell me the prompt I might remember (but still doubtful)
it really doesnt matter that much though
November 14, 2013 2:00 am at 2:00 am #987351the-art-of-moiParticipantI have no idea what to tell you, sorry. But I can wish you luck in being accepted to the sem that is right for you- good luck! Stay strong even if you don’t get accepted to the place you wanna be in.
November 14, 2013 2:25 am at 2:25 am #987352writersoulParticipantstreekgeek- I haven’t written it yet, that’s why I’m asking, and I assume that it will be very revealing to post it (yes, even more than I am already! Shocker!).
I’m just trying to figure out- should I write a little bit about everything- give a whole laundry list of things I like to do, people I learn from, classes I enjoy, blah blah blah? Or do I focus on one thing?
The “in praise of Michlalah” bit I figured, but I’m just not sure what I should focus on.
Thanks so much! I’m definitely keeping that stuff in mind.
Honestly, these applications are so complicated and annoying that the only thing that keeps me going sometimes is the thought that people actually attend these places, which means that it’s at least humanly possible to do it right…
November 14, 2013 2:49 am at 2:49 am #987353geshickedParticipantWere you involved in a particular chessed during your high school years? That’s usually a good jumping off point to talk about the experience and say how it’s influenced your life goals. And then talk about the integral role attending Michlalah will play in achieving those goals. Here’s where you put in the praise of the institution and what specifically about it makes you want to go there.
November 14, 2013 6:19 pm at 6:19 pm #987354frumgirl93Memberyeah don’t get too stressed over this… its the entrance exam thats the real killer….;)
November 14, 2013 11:23 pm at 11:23 pm #987355writersoulParticipantSo all my friends seem to be writing about individual topics, so I suppose I will too… thanks for the advice, everyone! I really appreciate the good wishes :).
frumgirl93: I know… baruch Hashem I’m good on most of the yedios klalios and the meforshim, usually, but I’m going to be TERRIBLE on the maamarei chazal. NOT excited.
November 15, 2013 12:32 am at 12:32 am #987356sem613Participantuseful little tidbit:
they dont actually decide whether to let you into michlalah based on the yidios klalios/maameri chazal/roshei teivos sections. based off those they decide who to give scholarship to, but the part that really matters for acceptance is the skills part
November 15, 2013 4:14 am at 4:14 am #987357popa_bar_abbaParticipantReally writersoul? You’re applying there? I figured you were smart enough for a real seminary.
(I still think so, BTW. Try BJJ, Bnos Sara, Bnos Chava, and a few more that I haven’t heard of. My wives all agree.)
November 15, 2013 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #987358sem613ParticipantI’m not going to get insulted by that remark pba.
there are some places where Michlalah is concidered the top seminary just by the way
November 15, 2013 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #987359frumgirl93Memberwow popa you did not just go there!
and sem613- you are absolutely right, they don’t care if you even get to the yedios klaliyos section. Put your main focus on the meforshim and you’ll do great! im so jealous of you!!!!
November 15, 2013 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #987360writersoulParticipantPBA: Did you really want to take the pin out of that grenade?…
Tell your wives that I have cousins who go/went to all three and who have told me that I would be completely miserable there. (Who all love/d them, by the way, but I would probably not.)
Your wives may be interested to know, however, that I am also applying to Machon Raaya. Is that smart enough for me? (I mean, it’s a tall order, after all…)
November 15, 2013 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm #987361popa_bar_abbaParticipantCousins, huh? Cousins are very good at knowing what you needed when you were 9. I’d sooner listen to a shidduch from Joseph than from a cousin.
In any event, suit yourself. Seminary is a scam anyway.
November 15, 2013 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #987362writersoulParticipantWhat, and I should trust the wives of some random, apparently polygamous guy on the internet?
Hmmmm, maybe I’m starting to agree with TorahMom on that other thread…
November 17, 2013 3:38 am at 3:38 am #987363popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy third (and prettiest) wife says Machon Raaya is good.
