HI! I am interested in doing medical coding as a parnossah, I want to live in E”Y, but work virtually online, I plan on getting a certificate (I want to take the prerequisite to the online certification program this summer and finish it at the beginning of the upcoming year, and then continue the program next summer…) online through AHIMA.

    A few questions:

How much money would I be able to earn starting off?

Is it a viable parnassah to support a family with?

Any thoughts, suggestions recommendations? I have heard that this is a growing virtual career for frum women to do because of the flexible hours and that makes it easier to be there for kids and stuff (I am not married, or shidduch dating at this time).

My daughter does medical coding for a hospital. The hours are flexible because they are open 24/7

according to a reliable source you might be required to work in physical work place for coding, billing as another business and yes workable online.

got it! What training programs do you recommend for billing that are online?

If I go back to the states at the end of next year, I most likely won’t have access to a car, and I live in a suburb with practically no public transportation (unless I pay a fortune for cabs), and in Israel, I would like an english speaking American program, and then I would work in the mean time while living in E”Y in order to make ends meet (I would prefer to live in israel during that time period).

SB – I think there is a company in Lakewood that has a lot of Frum women in Israel doing Medical Billing for them. Don’t remember the name though. Maybe owned by a Rosenbaum?.

I am not from lakewood, so I would not know. But that sounds like a great company to look into in the future.

I would like to know if there is a company that hires medical biller/coders. I live in Israel and definitely could use a job. I worked 20 years in the States as a medical biller, and am a certified coder (although did not work as a coder).

I enjoyed doing the medical billing, everyone is different, make sure that it is something that u really want to do, it can be tedious. Medical transcription, or regular transcription are also a good professions.

I need something that I can work in that allows me to speak english… I am having trouble finding a sherut leumi placement for next year because I can barely speak Hebrew… although, I did hire a private weekly ulpan tutor (I haven’t made aliyah yet, but it is best to work on hebrew skills when you are younger!)

Also fmrbklyner: Are you able to support a family with the income that you earn as a medical biller. I am also looking at medical transcription, the biggest concern I have is that I have a lot of medical issues, which are expensive to maintain, but I also need the flexible hours, and I want to be able to support a husband who is learning in Kollel (in E”Y) and my mother would never support me after I get married, that means paying the rent and food and stuff like that. Thank G-d for socialized medicine in E”Y, or I would not be able to make that type of dream somewhat realistic…

I am taking classes online for medical billing/coding through Alfred State College. You can check out their website, alfredstate.edu. Hatzluche.

Alfred State looks like it has an amazing program, the problem is that I live in the midwest, so I won’t be able to pay the tuition (I don’t have a cosigner, so I can’t take out loans). I looked up a program through my local community college (I am also interested in medical transcription), but they are not accepting any more new people into their medical transcription program.

At the same time, I feel like I should try to do a program where I can get some credits towards a B.A. just in case I decide to switch to a different career that requires a B.A. in order to get a job. At the end of this year, I expect to have seven credits towards a B.A. and if I take night classes at a different seminary next year, I am hoping to get another three credits.
