Manhattan is considered mukaf chomos for shabbos – it is surrounded by halachic walls (except for the fact that the bridges are mevatel the mechitzas for shabbos and the issue of 600,000 people etc).

Wouldn’t that make it also mukaf chomos for Purim, meaning, that at least l’chumra, one should also keep Shushan Purim in Manhatten?

See Rav Moshe’s psak about an eiruv in Manhattan.

t has to be mukaf chomah from the time of Yehoshua.

lower – “as to be mukaf chomah from the time of Yehoshua.” do you think Manhatten wasn’t an island at the time of yehoshua?! The “chomos” of shabbos should apply to Purim!

    R. Shmuel Dishon was once in Manhattan when he met an acquaintance who said, “good afternoon, R. Dishon.” R. Dishon responded that it was only 10:00 AM, it wasn’t noon yet. “In Manhattan it is always after noon shaarei tumah!”
My response is that the chomos of tumah don’t count as chomos for Purim.
In case someone thinks this makes sense, you drank too much too early.

The city was founded too recently. The previous inhabitants had some small villages, but nothing big (in part since they thought it unwise to build large communities next to a coast that frequently gets hit by hurricanes).

funnybone – is “noon” reserved only for “nun sha’arei tumah”?! Nun is also the nun sha’arei binah. Reminder that Torah was given on the 50th day!

In MANhattan only men can drink. If women want to drink they should change the name to WOMANhattan.

“do you think Manhatten wasn’t an island at the time of yehoshua?!”

Possibly not. My understanding is that it’s largely man made.

    akup – what is considered a city?village?

Can there be a “city” with only one inhabitant? Is there a minimum population for it to be called a “city”?

And how far can the chomos be from the inhabitants? Does the chomos need to be within daled amos of the inhabitants? A city/village that has it’s fields and surrounding lands enclosed by chomos – would describe Manhattan of old!

As a side issue: what is considered a ‘choma” – only a thick wall?! What about a picket fence??

But nachzor l’inyoneinu: why would you think the villagers didn’t consider the chomos of the island as their chomos?

    Proving my point.

The משנה in מגילה says עירות are places with 10 “בטלנים” less is a village
