November 21, 2011 5:48 am at 5:48 am #934261NechomahParticipantThere are some good comments in this thread that was posted a few weeks ago.
November 21, 2011 1:22 pm at 1:22 pm #934262maideleParticipantmachon raaya has about 30 girls in it, maybe youd want to consider chochmas lev, thats a larger sem. machon raaya is academic, the girls there are smart, and it is more academic than other place. what do you mean by minimal pressure? it seems like a chilled out sem, my year, the girls were VERY sweet and friendly.
November 21, 2011 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #934263bymrstudentMemberLAST YEAR Machon Raaya had 30-40 girls, but this year the number is more like 50-60, and the school plans on continuing in this way, dunno if they plan on expanding further.
BYMR is academic, but most definitely doesn’t have pressure – but lack of pressure really comes from the girls focusing on growth through learning, and not putting all the emphasis on grades.
November 21, 2011 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #934264Fake-teenMemberAny more sem girls want to post up? include location pls…
November 21, 2011 9:49 pm at 9:49 pm #934265cinderellaParticipantMR is in Har Nof, next to the Jerusalem forest, very centrally located. They let you pick alot of your classes which is amazing. They take very good care of you- like they find you places for shabbos and if enough girls want they keep the dorms open and cook for you on shabbos and yom tov. It is a relatively new seminary which has its pros and cons. I heard that it is very well established for a new seminary.
Whatever you choose I wish you all the best.
November 22, 2011 6:13 am at 6:13 am #934266jemmapuddleduckMemberCinderella: wats the cons…
November 22, 2011 10:14 pm at 10:14 pm #934267jemmapuddleduckMemberThanks a bunch…
Maidele: isn’t Chochmas Leiv more on the modern side?
bymr Student…that info was really helful..thanx
btw wat i meant by minimal pressure is that its not the type where you have to study the whole sefer b4 class…
Also does anyone know the style of interviews they give…entrance exam? what sort of Q’s they ask etc.
*Does anyone know anything more on seminar?

watch out for bias posts…
November 23, 2011 2:44 am at 2:44 am #934270maideleParticipantmost seminary interview you have to read something from the chumash, usually a ramban, some sems give u a few minutes outside to prepare it ex BYA, machon raaya doesnt do that, the advantage of that is though, that they KNOW you havent seen it before and dont expect it to be read perfectly. they ask u to read it, translate it etc. they then proceed to ask u a few things like what kind of sem are you looking for, why are you pulled to them. and they explain their sem, and ask you if you have any questions. just like their checking you out, by the interview your checking them out as well
November 23, 2011 2:46 am at 2:46 am #934271maideleParticipantsems dont usually give entrance exams. all sems have a range of girls.. its a spectrum some are frummer some are more modern, so some of the girls from seminar and machon raaya i think would go to chochmas lev, being that i dont know you, i dont know where on the spectrum you fall
November 23, 2011 11:15 am at 11:15 am #934272jemmapuddleduckMemberMaidele: thanx sooo much… btw abt ur last post…wats the percentage of the more ‘frummer’ to the more ‘modern’?
also do you- or any one elso know wheres the majority of the student body came from in past years… england? southafrica? out of towners? new yorkers? australians? israelis? europeans? etc…
Fine n Dandy: warning taken…
again.. does any one have any info on seminar??????

November 25, 2011 4:48 am at 4:48 am #934275OneOfManyParticipantI wrote a nice long post about BYMR on another thread:

Hope that helps!
December 5, 2011 4:25 am at 4:25 am #934277jemmapuddleduckMemberOne of Many. i read ur post- thanx sooo much.
wat other place wud u compare it 2? as in the types of girls that go there. -I know u said girls that applied to michlahlah, went there, but is that the same sort of place? my understanding was it was very different, more towards the yeshivish side than 2 michlahlah-which in my opinon is more modern…iz that true?
December 5, 2011 5:16 am at 5:16 am #934278OneOfManyParticipantIt’s really very different from Michlalah – it’s MUCH smaller, and much more yeshivish. What they have in common in the textual/inquiry-based learning (vs. hashkafic). It’s not quite like Hadar- or BJJ-yeshivish, though – it’s more like out-of-town, yeshivish background/aspiring yeshivish. VERY strong hashkafos. The closest seminary that I heard it compared to would probably be Bnos Sarah – with the type of learning you might get at Michlalah.
By the way, I think they have over 50 this year. So not to fear – it’s not getting smaller. (I am personally against this expansion, but okay.)
December 5, 2011 5:21 am at 5:21 am #934279OneOfManyParticipantBy the way, there’s some more good stuff on Machon Raaya here:

December 5, 2011 11:03 pm at 11:03 pm #934280jemmapuddleduckMemberone of many, thanku so much.
thats more or less wat i’m looking for… and 2 of my friends r applying to Bnos Sarah….
btw, like i said b4 (or did i?) i want something average… not like BJJ, but not soo small either like Shoshanim, pninim etc…
January 13, 2013 4:05 am at 4:05 am #934282tickle me pinkMemberi just had my machon raaya interview on thursday!!!! baruch hashem it went so well:D the lady was really sweet and ya i had to read a ramban. dont be nervous! the lady was sooo cute:) btw, does anyone know the dress code? is it the norm pleated skirt and button down? if yes where shud i shop?
January 13, 2013 4:43 am at 4:43 am #934283OneOfManyParticipantWith Mrs. Rosenblum or Mrs. Treger? 🙂
The dress code my year was pretty lax – any collared shirt with buttons (even a polo) and any skirt with pleats (like a biz). I don’t know if they made it any stricter, as I do know the seminary has changed quite a bit… Anyway, I got most of my shirts at Old Navy (they usually have some really nice lightweight button-downs on sale at the end of the summer), and most of my skirts from Junee…and some other random stores…
January 13, 2013 7:08 am at 7:08 am #934284bymrerMemberooh, wish i was going back! last year it was same as oom, but i hear this year now that they’re in geulah, they’re being a little stricter on the button down sitch. not positive about that though… if you go, be prepared for the most amazing year ever!!!
January 14, 2013 2:15 am at 2:15 am #934285tickle me pinkMemberi had it with mrs rosenblum…um junee is sooo expensive! is there any where else i can get pleated skirts from? and does it really have to be 4 inches below ur knee? or is 1 or 2 inches good enuf?
January 14, 2013 2:53 am at 2:53 am #934286OneOfManyParticipantyayz Mrs. Rosenblummmmm :3
Elzee is a good place for the cheap stuff. I find that the best outfitting strategy is to buy a one or two nice, good quality things, and then supplement with a couple of cheaper ones.
And lololol they soooo aren’t going to go around measuring…just wear whatever you are most comfortable with (that covers the knee, y’know). I wore my ankle-length skirts about half the time anyway – but again, I’m not sure if they’re going to change/have changed the policy about that…
By the way, now that bymrer brings it up…does anyone know if they are making a shanah bet? Because they were really trying to get it together my year, but couldn’t get enough people…just curious that they might now that they’ve, what, tripled in size?
January 15, 2013 4:31 am at 4:31 am #934287tickle me pinkMemberoneofmany thanks so much for ur advice! ill keep them in mind…i just bought 2 good skirts from junne and a couple other ones from random places…how long ago where u in bymr? and is the workloaad really hard?
January 15, 2013 4:48 am at 4:48 am #934288OneOfManyParticipantI was there two years ago. The workload is nothing to sneeze at, but quite manageable. A lot of it is day-to-day stuff – most of the mandatory classes have “hachana,” where you have to prepare the sources for the lecture before class, plus a couple of weekly quizzes and short assignments. The most time intensive assignments are the reports – you will probably have to write at least 3-4 research papers of 5-7 pages a term. You definitely have to try to pace yourself on those. Also, your workload will depend on how many electives you choose to take.

February 10, 2013 1:31 am at 1:31 am #93430813ParticipantI’m also going to Raaya and I’m so excited!!! Does anyone know exactly where it’s located? and what the dress code is? Like button down and pleated…?
February 10, 2013 2:58 am at 2:58 am #934309ontheballMemberGreat location- right in Geula. NOT A GOOD IDEA TO POST THE ADDRESS. Uniform is button down and pleated. Dorm is new and nice. 4 girls per room. Each room has a private bathroom and shower.
February 10, 2013 4:34 am at 4:34 am #934310jewishfeminist02MemberWhy are pleated skirts required at Bais Yaakov and seminary? Are the skirts somehow supposed to be more tznius if they have pleats?
I never went to Bais Yaakov or seminary, so I’m genuinely curious.
February 10, 2013 4:44 am at 4:44 am #934311ThePurpleOneMemberthats just whats standerd.. thru elementry and high skool.. looks put together!! sem pleated skirts are the same as hi skl? long or short?
