PBA: I heard Satmar enjoys singing that one.

I honestly have not been able to find any Heter (or even a Limud Zchus) for singing any songs where the lyrics come from Shir HaShirim. And certainly not any that contain concepts like love.

    Popa, it was discussed here:

Making a Song Out of a Pasuk

It’s not on hebrewbooks, which only has the ?”? up to ??? ?”?.

Sam2: r’ baruch ber wrote kol dodi dofeik, from shir hashirim.

Got it. I was aware of the source of pesukim, but unaware it was read to apply only to shir hashirim.

Sam: What is the sevara on that? The medrash says “asauni banayich k’min zemer” (MB’s language) which would seem to apply to any passuk. I figure maybe it could be read to mean only if it isn’t being sung as inspiration davka of the passuk. But why wouldn’t that apply to shir hashirim also?

(Also, should it apply to other places similar to shir hashirim? How about eishes chayil?)

Maseches Derech Eretz specifically says that the problem is using it for a love song. It is obvious from the Gemara as well. The Gemara didn’t pick Tehillim for an example.

    Shir Hashirim is Kodesh Kodoshim.

Also, the fact that Shir Hashirim uses the relationship between a man and a woman as a moshol for the relationship between klal Yisroel and the Eibishter makes it particularly dangerous to make songs out of it (although most learn that the issur applies to all of Tanach).

IIRC, there’s also a teshuva from R’ Moshe about it; I’ll try to find it.

PBA: R’ Moshe says it is only about Shir Hashirim as a Limud Z’chus on using any Passuk. The basic reason is that Shir HaShirim is the easiest to confuse for an actual love song. We might mean the Torah when we hear “Kol Dodi Hinei Zeh Ba” but that’s certainly not what it sounds like. I could see the S’vara extending to Eishes Chayil. Then again, if I had to guess, I would think that Eishes Chayil (unlike Shir HaShirim) is meant to be true on a Pashut Pshat level as well. When you give Pashut Pshat in Shir HaShirim, you lose what it actually means. Saying Eishes Chayil about one’s wife (as an actual love song) is something Jews have been doing for hundreds of years, if not longer.

DY: This is awkward. You just quoted a T’shuvah of the TZ”E that I was entirely unaware of. B”N I’m going to go look it up right now.

According to the shita that holds that making a song out of Tanach is problematic only by using a whole pasuk, then R’ Baruch Ber’s song would not be a problem.

Why would it only be a problem if you use the whole Passuk? How does that change anything at all?

Sam, the Gemara only says that we tell her, look what we took for a Mashal.

Sam, did you find the TZ”E I referred to?

    #1022991

Why was my comment not posted? According to the shitah that only a whole passuk is problematic then R’ Baruch Ber’s song would not be a problem.

    See above.

Sam, where have we been using Eishes Chayil as a ‘love song’.

Anyhow, Eishes Chayil, Pshat or not, is far from Shir Hashirim. It is about appreciation and praise, not about attraction. The words of Shir Hashirim can be used with a Yetzer Hara, but not Eishes Chayil. Eishes Chayil can be used for its Melitza Pshat, which at worst would be like using words of a Pasuk in conversation, which is constantly done. If I’m not mistaken, love songs are hardly about one’s legitimate, loyal wife.
