September 19, 2010 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm #696754Y.W. EditorKeymasterMost stores will give you a posul one for free.
To buy a kosher real cheap set, just wait until erev yom tov, and pick one up for $15.
🙂
September 19, 2010 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #696755WIYMemberI wonder if the child will be making a Bracha on it if Halachically it would be better if the set should be Kosher?
September 20, 2010 12:15 am at 12:15 am #696756WIYMemberI asked a Rav if it is ok to buy a Possul set for a kid. He said if the kid will be making a Bracha on it, it is preferable to buy a Kosher set. Just a heads up.
September 20, 2010 12:33 am at 12:33 am #696757good.jewMemberI don’t get it. If your child is old enough to understand what he is doing and why , than why buy a posul set? If not, just buy him a lemon
September 20, 2010 2:13 am at 2:13 am #696758estherhamalkaMemberhe is 4.i dont think i need to spend $ on a set for him that may or may not be used. i just thought it would be nice for him to have his own set like the big boys.its more for chinuch then for obligation.if i can get away with saving some $ im all for it.his father will have a mehudar set so if he wants to make the bracha then he can.i just thought it would be cute to let him carry his own set.his father really doesnt let him get too close to his!
September 20, 2010 4:26 am at 4:26 am #696759cherrybimParticipantestherhamalka – Why a kosher lulav and esrog? Because that’s what chinuch is.
Why put real tzitzis on your son when you can tie some strings to his pants?
Why give your four year old son chulent with kosher meat when you can teach him oneg shabbos with treif which is a lot cheaper?

You can buy cheap kosher sets the day before or day of Erev Yom Tov. If anything, tell your husband to take your son with him when they shop for the set he will be excited by the experience and it will give him an appreciation for mitvos. Take advantage of every opportunity to give your kid a love and enthusiasm for mitzvos.
September 20, 2010 3:57 pm at 3:57 pm #696761estherhamalkaMemberCherrybim-there is no such thing as fake tzitzis so i have to put on him the real thing. As for unkosher meat-c’mon-i should trief up my house to save a few dollars?i would never do that. And speaking about the tzitzis, actually my cleaning lady butchered a couple of them but my husband said its ok for my son to wear them because at this age he is wearing them for chinuch not because he really has to.So he is actually wearing possul tzitzis.
my son is not going to know the difference if his llulav cost a thousand dollars or if i got it for free.He will feel like he is part of the jewish people in shul when he waves it and that to me is all i need from him right now!i need him to love judiasm and to be proud of who he is which is the lesson i am trying to impart.i didnt think this issue was so heated!
WIY-thanks for the advice.i think iwill ask my husband if he can take our son lulav and esrog shopping.that sounds like fun for both of them!and i am trying to give him a love of the mitzvos by getting him a set!
September 20, 2010 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #696762arcParticipantThey sell a fake set my 4 year old loved it last year.
September 20, 2010 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #696763theprof1ParticipantFirst of all I think it’s ridiculous to buy a set for a 4 year old. True it’s chinuch but the actual mitzva of chinuch begins at 9, not at 4. Yes we do chinuch much earlier but these are chinuch things directly connected to the person, such as tzitzis and brochos. The general minhag is one esrog and lulav for the entire family. Chinuch therefore is having him do the mitzva like everybody else. Most boys don’t have their own set until they get married. Buying a set for him will make him different and in a spoiling way. OK that said, if you do buy it should definitely be a kosher set, albeit barely kosher for $15 or whatever erev succos.
September 20, 2010 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #696764popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf I gave my four year old a lulav, it would not be for chinuch purposes.
It would be to make him happy.
Accordingly, I would give him a lemon if I couldn’t get a really cheap esrog.
Are you sure you are doing it for chinuch? Is there such a chinuch for a four year old?
September 20, 2010 7:07 pm at 7:07 pm #696765squeakParticipantpopa-
Some children are more precocious than others. There are definitely some 4 year olds who “get it” and could appreciate the chinuch aspect. And once you have some kids like that, which parent is going to say his little yankele is any less precocious as little Yankele Cohen across the street….
Besides, your 4 year old is only going to shul to run around, anyway. We wouldn’t want him swinging a lulav at the same time, could be dangerous.
September 20, 2010 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #696766cherrybimParticipantIf a child can do na’anuim, you are obligated to provide him with a kosher esrog and lulav.
Many children are in this category; if not all, if you believe the grandparents of these little geniuses.
