Anyone here on diets, seeing a nutritionist etc?
Let’s share our battles with our food cravings, and how we are working to lose the extra pounds.
Let’s try and keep this thread mature and serious, to help those who may actually get an insight or two from your blogs.
December 14, 2010 5:39 am at 5:39 am #717438cshapiroMember1500 calories a day… just count calories it works great, and dont forget to drink a lot!!!! (this all depends on your initial weight but you can look up this info online).
December 14, 2010 5:44 am at 5:44 am #717439ronrsrMemberwhen I was a lad of 11, in 1966, I weighed a lot, 180 pounds or so. I borrowed my aunt’s Weight Watchers diet, and lost 70 pounds in about four months.
I pretty much kept that wait off for the next 30+ years, but my weight began to creep up slowly in my late 40s and early 50s. nothing dramatic, just a few pounds per year.
Two winters ago, I went back to Weight Watchers, this time to the meetings etc., and lost about 20 pounds in 4 months. I’ve kept 15 pounds off since then. I had intended to go back last winter, but I had pneumonia, and that wasn’t possible.
I’m thinking about going back this winter for another 20.
I highly recommend Weight Watchers. It’s hard to lose and keep off weight alone.
December 14, 2010 5:52 am at 5:52 am #717440dunnoMemberWow ronrsr! That’s a lot! There’s an app for the iPod known as Lose It! which tracks your calories.
December 14, 2010 5:57 am at 5:57 am #717441ronrsrMemberI think there’s a bit more to dieting than JUST counting calories. Weight Watchers makes that simpler, using a point system. They also integrate all the latest nutritional and behavioral research on weight loss into their program.
December 14, 2010 5:57 am at 5:57 am #717442houseofjavaMemberI started going to a zumba class, which got me hooked on working out! once i got that boost, I got the motivation to watch what I eat
December 14, 2010 5:59 am at 5:59 am #717443ronrsrMemberI went from 180 pounds to 110 pounds when I was 11. I was still a chunky kid, but before I was really fat. Why did I stop at 110 pounds?
One day, a relative asked me if I ever cheated. I said, no, I didn’t know that that was an option. Of course, that was the end of the weight loss for me once my eyes were opened.
December 14, 2010 6:18 am at 6:18 am #717444egbooks47Memberwhen i was 10 i weighed 137 pounds…
at 15 i was 330…
so i started atkins but gained it all back….
so i went on the weight watchers point counting system and went down to 265..
then i started watching what i eat w/o counting and lost 15 lbs more….
now i watch wat i eat and i walk/run/jog alll the time and im down to 190
December 14, 2010 6:22 am at 6:22 am #717445ronrsrMemberCongratulations, dear egbooks. Welcome to the Society of Successful Losers!
Oops. I’ve been meaning to change that name for the longest time.
December 14, 2010 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #717447aries2756ParticipantAfter years of yoyo dieting and even almost starvation diets (which I gained and ballooned on) I finally went to a doctor and found out it was a metabolic problem connected to other medical issues that was happening to me. Who knew that if you stop eating your body stores fat and you gain?
So now I am on medication from my doctor, and with his help the fat is coming off. I am still not eating enough or it would come off faster. But he really found out what was going on with me and made sense of everything. I am down about 30 lbs. since May and around a 12/14. He told me stress is also a factor and not sleeping is also a factor. So I’m really, really trying. My friends are not too supportive because they have no rachmonos on someone who stares at the fridge and can’t choose what to eat. Or someone who in my case forgets to eat all day. Yeah sounds strange and wierd, but the doctor says if I don’t fuel my metabolism, it ain’t going to work.
So we each have our own pekel, but for those skinny people who look down on others for being heavy. You never should judge because you don’t know if it is medical or just a lack of will power.
December 14, 2010 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #717448adorableParticipantno cake and cookies and just eat healthy normal balanced meals-especially breakfast! Also i do the weighted hoola-hoop and its working wonders!!!
December 14, 2010 5:17 pm at 5:17 pm #717452blinkyParticipantabc- i meant by my blank post to just eat nothing the whole day thats sure to guarantee weight loss!
Jk i wrote something then changed my mind, seemed the mods missed it…
December 14, 2010 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #717453popa_bar_abbaParticipantThere was a professor who recently went on the twinkie diet, to prove that the only thing that counts is calorie intake. He ate 1800 calories daily of mostly junk food.
He lost 27 lbs. in ten weeks.
His LDL (bad cholesterol)went down 20%
His HDL (good cholesterol) went up 20%
His triglyceride level went down 39%
Google “twinkie diet”
I posted a link earlier, but it was taken down.
December 14, 2010 5:39 pm at 5:39 pm #717454abc1234Participantvery cool! i just googled it and read about him! for years i waas saying the same thing and that was how i lost weight but everyone told me that there must have been other things that i did because it’s not possible! thanks for proving my point!
December 14, 2010 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #717455not IMemberCalorie diets work the best. My husband has been on it for years already. It works because you know you can have whatever junk you want .. but then less for luinch etc.
You can eat a full b’fast, lunch and suppper. Looks like a lot but really only 2100 calories. It depends on your build. you can’t go down too much..
December 14, 2010 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #717456aries2756Participantblinky, not eating doesn’t help. I am the proof of that.
PBA, who supervised him and who documented that he was telling the truth?
December 14, 2010 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #717457popa_bar_abbaParticipanthttp://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html
He is a nutrition professor at kansas state. He did not make it up.
December 14, 2010 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm #717458bptParticipantTry to only eat things you make at home
If you must but store bought food, try to avoid things that have more than 5 ingredients
Avoid anything with hydrogenated anything in it
Fill your plate with 50% salad, 25% main course, 25% side dish
No food past 8:00pm
Of course, exercise is a must. Otherwise, its like fighting with one hand tied behind your back. You can do it on diet alone, but you need to work much harder. Make life easy!
December 14, 2010 5:57 pm at 5:57 pm #717459blinkyParticipantaries- i know i know, i was just joking! Anyway a good tip- set yourself some small rules that you can stick to. Lets say for example dont eat after 8, or drink 8-10 cups of water daily. so if you went off on your diet but kept to this its still a score for you and then you wont feel so guilty. Good luck!!
December 14, 2010 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm #717460AinOhdMilvadoParticipantThat professor who went on the “twinkie diet” was NOT advocating doing that as a real diet!
He was just trying to prove the point that one has to watch one’s calories, and that cutting calories will lead to weight loss.
He was NOT suggesting that twinkies provide the nutritional needs necessary to stay healthy.
December 14, 2010 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #717461aries2756ParticipantBlinky, I don’t feel guilty. I need someone to remind me to eat!
December 14, 2010 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm #717462blinkyParticipantaries- thats a first!! But why aren’t you eating are you not hungry?
December 14, 2010 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #717463blueberrymuffinParticipantGranted – eating less calories will make you lose weight, but it won’t necessarily provide you with the healthy nutritional needs your body requires…
I’m on weight watchers and I’m loving it! They just redid their entire system and one of the new rules is that fruits and vegetables are totally free!
BP Totty – I think this is the first time I saw a post from you that was completely serious from beggining to end! I didn’t know you had it in you…!
December 14, 2010 6:54 pm at 6:54 pm #717464aries2756ParticipantOne of the problems of one of my medical issues. No appetite and no I don’t get hungry. I do get a headache which is when I realize I forgot to eat. And I have all these yummy yogurts I filled my fridge with, but I need to get to the fridge to see them.
December 14, 2010 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm #717465blinkyParticipantok aries i will be your reminder to eat! Did you eat lunch today?? If not log off now and come back in fifteen minutes! Its not polite to eat and “talk” at the same time:)
December 14, 2010 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #717466bptParticipant“.. completely serious from beggining to end”
I try to keep it light, but it really depens on the thread. Wanna see real seroius? Check out the last 2 posts I made in the “what I learned from my teenager” thread. That’s serious business, and I posted very seriously.
Same goes for car posts. Very serious business.
December 14, 2010 7:22 pm at 7:22 pm #717467pumperMemberI have started the South Beach diet recently, and I am really enjoying it! I have lost about 2 pounds a week, and sometimes I forget that I’m on a diet! The best part is that there is NO calorie counting or strict portion control.
Basically the diet is to eat only whole grains, fruits and vegetables and lean protein and dairy.
The first two weeks are called phase 1- where you are not supposed to eat any carbs or fruits. The point is to jumpstart your weight loss. During this stage I lost over 10 pounds!
This diet is great for those who hate counting calories, and also hate being hungry! Most days I am not hungry at all! Go South Beach!
December 14, 2010 7:26 pm at 7:26 pm #717468aries2756ParticipantThanks, Blinky. Actually, I didn’t and I am so far from hungry, I still feel full from my morning drink.
December 14, 2010 9:25 pm at 9:25 pm #717469popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe reason women can’t lose weight is because they are looking for trick, like the south beach diet.
There are no tricks. None. You lose weight by consuming less calories than you burn. That is it.
If your diet does that, you will lose weight. If it does not, you won’t.
When you go off the diet, you obviously gain back all the weight. You need to make lifestyle changes that result in permanently taking in only the amount you burn.
December 14, 2010 9:31 pm at 9:31 pm #717470pumperMemberpopa-
“The reason women can’t lose weight is because they are looking for trick, like the south beach diet.”
I beg to differ. South Beach is not a fad diet, nor is it a “trick” it is a way of eating that can be maintained for life. I find it very easy to follow, I am eating well, I am not hungry, and I am losing weight. Where is the trick.
I think people may mix up south beach with all those other fad diets because of its name- it sort of sounds like its gonna be one of those cabbage soup diets, but its not!
December 14, 2010 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #717471aries2756ParticipantPoppa, like I said, sometimes its a medical thing. And reducing calories works but only to a degree and that is if you don’t reduce too many and you reduce the right ones not the wrong ones. You also need to exercise or you are going to lose muscle and water and not fat pounds.
December 14, 2010 9:46 pm at 9:46 pm #717472popa_bar_abbaParticipantAries: How can it only work to a degree? What happens to those people when they eat less calories? Do they starve to death while still fat?
December 14, 2010 9:48 pm at 9:48 pm #717473popa_bar_abbaParticipantpumper:
Sorry, SBD is a fad. Find me someone who is on it long term and is happy.
And besides, it only works if you end up eating less calories. That is certain. Cut out half the normal foods, and you’re bound to eat less calories.
December 14, 2010 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #717474aries2756ParticipantNo when they eat to little they don’t fuel the metabolism to burn off the fat and they stay status quo. You really have to know what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. That’s why fad diets don’t work and you wind up gaining everything back plus more. Because you lose mostly water and muscle and not fat to begin with. You lose too much to quickly so you shock your system. And then when you try to eat normally, your system is so hayward it is sending out mixed messages all over the place.
Protein is needed to fuel your metabolism. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gets your metabolism going first thing in the morning. If you skip breakfast your metabolism isn’t kicked into gear until you actually eat something with protein in it. That is why you feel sluggish, tired and not up to par.
December 15, 2010 1:34 am at 1:34 am #717475pumperMemberpopa-
I happen to know a few people who have been on South Beach for over two years and have stuck to it. That would qualify as long term, no?
The thing about South Beach is that there is no food family that is being cut out. Some think that it is low carb, but actually, you are allowed three whole grain carbs a day, which I don’t think qualifies as low carb.
Have you ever been on South Beach, or are you going on hearsay?
December 15, 2010 3:34 am at 3:34 am #717476popa_bar_abbaParticipant2 years is not very long term. How about 20?
Look, if you are eating less calories, good. If not, you can’t lose weight.
December 15, 2010 4:41 am at 4:41 am #717477HomeownerMemberThere are many different diets and many different ways to lose weight. While it has been correctly stated here that you have to consume less calories than you burn, it is also true that you need both information and willpower.
First, check with your doctor. What is your ideal weight? What is your acceptable weight? What is your BMI (Body Mass Index)?
Baruch Hashem, b’li ayin harah, my BMI this morning was 23.1. This has been a five year journey for me and I will be happy when it drops below 23. (Actually hit 23.0 last week.)
Someone came over to me in shul one Shabbos a few months ago and asked, “How come you’re not eating anything; it’s your kiddush?”
“No,” I replied with a smile, “it’s your kiddush. It’s just my yahrzeit.”
Hatzlacha to everyone!
December 15, 2010 5:55 am at 5:55 am #717478smartcookieMemberDifferent diets work for different people. There is no one way to lose weight.
However, starving yourself, as Aries already mentioned, only shuts down your metabolism and is very unhealthy in the long run.
December 15, 2010 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #717479pumperMemberPopa-
“2 years is not very long term. How about 20?”
Hard for someone to stick with a diet for 20 years if its only been around for less than ten years. The first South Beach diet book came out in 2003.
May 22, 2022 11:04 pm at 11:04 pm #2089641n0mesorahParticipantDear Aries,
It’s been eleven and a half years. Time to eat again.
