I’m finishing my liberal arts BA now and only have about 20 credits left. I’m interested in eventually getting a masters in social work.
So here’s my questions to anyone with experience in this area:
1. Do I have to major in psychology in my BA in order to get into a masters of social work program?
2. If not, are there specific courses I have to take as part of my BA in order to get into masters of social work programs?
3. Are there any Masters of Social work online programs that are recommended for frum students?
4. Does Rebbetzin Bulka’s seminary offer an online option for the masters of social work program?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

August 12, 2015 5:39 pm at 5:39 pm #1095475gofishMemberI’m in the process of getting my masters in social work, and did a lot of research on all the questions you are asking:
For most if not all programs, you need to major in social work or psychology in your Bachelors.
I know of a nice few Jewish people who do Fordham, which has an online option. It’s a great on-campus program, so the online program isn’t disregarded as junk, unlike many online-only programs.
Two online universities which are supposed to be top-notch are UCS (great curriculum, prestigious, very high standards, but also very expensive) and Simmonds, but you would have to do research on how compatible they are for a frum person.
You can take Rebbetzin Bulka’s program in New York or Israel. The social work program only meets once a week, on Sunday, for a full day, so you can commute. It’s an amazing program and you can specialize. (The Drug and Alcohol specialization at LIU is supposed to be their best program. It’s known nationally for being top in that field.) You can try to get an exception and Skype classes elsewhere, but I don’t know of anyone who got such an agreement.
Good luck with your decisions!

As a student in college, I have heard that line about virtually every field- and if not that line, then some other similar dismissive comment. It is very discouraging and confusing to a young, often idealistic student – or a student at any level – to have those lines thrown out constantly.
The bottom line is, today’s job market is not great. There are loads of naysayers out there. As long as you do your research and are making a reasonable effort at hishtadlus, the rest is left up to G-d.

At the end of the day, if someone is a good social worker, b’derech hateva, they will have business. Good clinical social workers can charge over $300 a session. Good casework management social workers can climb up the ladder to become part of the agency’s administration and make nice money. Social workers can be administrators of non-profit organizations and government agencies and make a beautiful living.
The market may be swarming and over flooded, but the good merchandise will definitely get bought most of the time…
