Is the fact that some countries like France, that are very liberal, creating an environment where extremism can flourish?

France has had a significant migration of Muslims from its former empire including most of the terrorists and many of the security personnel killed by said terrorists.

What needs to be realized are limits on how much extremism is too much extremism, and where that line is. As is the case with my father in a post-9/11 world, simply wearing a black hat and a beard (Jewish attire) can trigger peoples’ poorly tuned and hyper sensitive extremism detectors. 🙁

See in oppressive regimes (Saudi Arabia, Iran Etc) that are the antithesis of liberalism, extremisim can’t flourish.

January 11, 2015 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #1051378yytzParticipantWhat is left and right is very different by country and time. It’s not so simple that one can say that liberalism led to extremism in France. We are more liberal than them in some ways (affirmative action, etc.)
The Muslim immigrants are simply very different there. They let in the impoverished Muslim masses from their former colonies, while we (the US) let in the college-educated elite Muslims. We also have some extremism and terror attacks here too — Nidal Hassan killed 13, the Boston Bombers killed 3, the DC Snipers killed 10 (it’s unclear but they definitely seem to have been influenced by jihadi ideology), etc.

I agree we are more liberal here. The question is why we were spared. I think because we have a very good counter terrorism system. We shouldn’t rest on our britches!
