I have an amazing wife. I’ve mentioned that she is a doctor. Immediately after Shabat ended, before I even made it home from shul, she left for an evacuation shelter where she will be spending the night as the shelter’s doctor as part of New York City’s Medical Reserve Corps.
Lets hear it for all the emergency responders, paid and unpaid. The police officers and firefighters who are working unscheduled extra shifts. The ambulance workers, both the FDNY and other professionals, and the hatzalah volunteers. The doctors who work the overnight shifts in the emergency departments, and the people like my wife who are volunteering as part of the MRC. The Con Ed and Verizon workers who will be working nonstop to restore power and communications. And the people at the National Weather Service who are staying up all night, keeping tabs on the hurricane’s path of destruction.
Lets say extra prayers for their safety as well as ours.

August 28, 2011 4:01 pm at 4:01 pm #803015popa_bar_abbaParticipantHuzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!
I’ve only heard that word in context of:
I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! She burns! She’ll come! She’ll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!
August 28, 2011 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #803016ronrsrMemberYou usually see it only in archaic literary and poetic contexts today, but i was trying to raise the level of discourse here, in case haifagirl was reading. It’s been replaced by hurrah or hooray.
August 28, 2011 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #803017charliehallParticipantPopa,
Those aren’t the real lyrics of “Maryland, My Maryland”, but the real ones are just as offensive to people who love the United States.

I think there are different versions. I pulled those off the Maryland state website (it is still their state song?!).
The real lyrics, and these, are indeed offensive to anyone who loves this country. For example when it calls Lincoln “the despot”. And the stanza I quoted above which refers to “northern scum”.
(I have more to say about this issue, but it’s not for this happy thread.)
August 29, 2011 1:45 am at 1:45 am #803020Josh31ParticipantA huge amount of the resources that deal with weather emergencies are part of the US Navy. They also bring us sunrise and sunset charts, and actual “Molad” (of the new moon) calculations.
On Shabbos we announced the Molad to be 4:24:43 Monday morning Jerusalem Solar Time or about 10:04 PM tonight Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The Navy calculated Molad is 11:04 tonight EDT.

August 29, 2011 2:43 am at 2:43 am #803022ronrsrMemberThanks in part to: our municipal light department for getting our power back so quickly, the.local police department for responding to our fallen tree emergency so quickly. The guys at rhe radio station who went into work early and stayed at the hotel so they could be sure to be on the air and keep us informed. The weather forecasters, both public and private for reading this sttorm so well and giving us time to prepare. The entire emergency management system, from top to bottom, who were ready to help if things got out of hand, including charliehall’s wife and the tens of thousans of good souls like her.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

August 30, 2011 4:09 am at 4:09 am #803026charliehallParticipantPopa,
You are right. That is the last verse. What I learned in public school in Maryland was the first verse:
The despot’s heel is on thy shore,
Maryland, my Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland, my Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!
===
The “patriotic gore” was when a mob of southern sympathizers attacked the US Army during the early days of the civil war. Basically, the song is seditious. It turns out that there is another 19th century “Maryland, my Maryland” poem, with the same meter, that isn’t seditious and there was a serious proposal in the Maryland General Assembly to replace the seditious lyrics with the non-seditious ones.
