When I was in yeshiva there was an altah bochur who was actually a rebbe. Well, his grandfather was, and then it sorted of didn’t take after the war, and his father sold diamonds, but he was technically a rebbe. And so he used to have us do rebbishe things for him.
So one year he told a few guys, or maybe we heard, that we were supposed to ask him for lekach. So we lined up in back of the yeshiva (that’s where we heard to go-he did mysterious things), and he was there.
And he handed each person a dead chicken from the kapparos.
Whatever he gave you is not the point. The reason for LEKACH (or dead chickens) is as follows;
In case Hashem gave you a gezeira of “matnas bosor v’dom” that you would need to rely on others for sustenance, this should be it.

One year, we sat in huts a few days after Yom Kippur, so in case there was a gezeirah of golus, that should be it.

Ki lekach tov nasati lechem. Its a peleh – one is pas habah bkisnin and one is pas… how is it possible that we didn’t already have lechem/pas before we had lekach?
I asked this shayla to many rebbes and only one was able to answer in a satisfactory way (the rest answered in a factory way). That is the one true rebbe and the only one who I get lekach from anymore. But I’m not releasing the answer here for a bunch of misnagdim like popa to benefit from.
My father, A”H, had he Minhag of going to our Shul Sukkah and eating food from the Shul on Hoshana Rabbah. It seems like this was based on the Minhag of Lekach. The one thing I do not know, which I would greatly appreciate, is do any of you know of a Tefillah that accompanies Lekach? As has been pointed out, the purpose is for the Kiyum of the Gezairah of Matnas Bosor V’Dam and Galus, but I seem to remember my father saying a Tefillah which encompassed both of those things, but I cannot find the Tefillah (my father was niftar almost 23 years ago). Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
