Im looking for a place to buy good wood for my lag baomer fire. I need wood that burns well and is not chometz. Please advise asap!!!!! Zrizim makdimim lemitzvah. I dont want to be late.
February 18, 2020 9:00 am at 9:00 am #1832744JosephParticipantHome Depot
February 18, 2020 10:06 am at 10:06 am #1832764lowerourtuition11210ParticipantPro: I am wondering how firewood would be chometz?
February 18, 2020 11:27 am at 11:27 am #1832790MilhouseParticipantAssuming that “firewood” can be chometz (i.e. it’s not actually wood, it’s edible, but its primary purpose is to use as fuel, such as “shemen sreifah”), why would it be a problem? Buy it now, and sell it over Pesach. Even if you’re one of those people who (for some reason I do not understand) won’t eat chometz that was sold over Pesach, you’re not planning to eat this “wood” anyway, so what’s the problem?
February 18, 2020 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm #1832823ForshayerParticipantAlong with the wood for the fire, make sure you pick up some of the KP water you’ll need to put out the fire. Can’t be too careful with these things.
February 18, 2020 1:43 pm at 1:43 pm #1832865UncleMoParticipantMaybe get a headstart on Teshuva for Rosh Hashanah. I’m sure you don’t want to be late there either.
February 18, 2020 2:50 pm at 2:50 pm #1832901rationalParticipantOuch.
You must mean Lag Ba’omer 5780February 18, 2020 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1832917Old Crown HeightsParticipantif you also need for the wood to be glatt, while you’re at Home Depot get some sandpaper.
February 18, 2020 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1832929Old Crown HeightsParticipantmaybe Pro Schnapps is worried that the wood will get wet and somehow distill and Methanol (wood alcohol) will form? PSA: drinking wood alcohol causes blindness.
February 18, 2020 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1832933silentmoisheParticipantMake sure it’s Glatt Kosher, Cholov Yisroel, Yoshon, Gebaken noch Pesach, with Badatz and OU hechsherim. Anything less would be unacceptable for such a holy purpose!
February 19, 2020 3:39 am at 3:39 am #1833020MilhouseParticipantWood alcohol is not chometzdik.
February 19, 2020 5:04 am at 5:04 am #1833032BillyweeParticipantIf you goto Home Depot also buy a tarp. If the wood gets rained on you have a problem with Gebrokts.

February 19, 2020 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #1833371LostsparkParticipantMy Seder made it clear through to Lag B’Omer last year as well. The only wood I had wasn’t chametz but it wasn’t glatt either my Rav poskend it was bediaved for I wasn’t aware of these chumros. I’ll be more careful this year.
February 20, 2020 7:05 am at 7:05 am #1833458Old Crown HeightsParticipantI think a consensus is forming that Hadloka wood must be glatt (800 grit minimum) and hiddur mitzvah is zoch wood, i.e. real lumber (no particle board that has glue and other fillers). Mehadrin min hamehadrin is (for example) old growth, eye of the redwood, only using the dense center of each log. The rest of the wood you can use to burn the Chometz or even bake matzah. Just not for the bonfire. Needless to say, Hadloka wood should be chopped by a chassidishe lumberjack.
February 21, 2020 12:29 am at 12:29 am #1834020pro geshmake yiddenParticipantWhen I see geshmake yidden trying so hard to cling to the mesoirah of kosher firewood I tell myself there is hope for klal yisroel!!! Pro schnapps you should be gebentched!!!
When I grew up on the shores of the Danube river in Galicia we only used mayim shelanu to put out the lag baomer fire after we finished tantzing around and around. Regards to Reb shimon when are we booking tickets?February 21, 2020 7:01 am at 7:01 am #1834029LostsparkParticipantJoseph:
Chas V Shalom any self respecting yid should purchase triefah wood for a mitzvah purpose at Home Depot!
What hechsherim have you seen the lumber yard!?! All Home Depot’s wood has been kiln treated to remove unwanted moisture rendering everything there bishul akum.

Milhouse,

Al tehei birchas hamazon kal b’einechaFebruary 22, 2020 11:33 pm at 11:33 pm #1834443MilhouseParticipantSo sell it to me and I will sell it to a goy. I have no such silly hangups.
